    Pools should now come with bonding lugs and one in the skimmer..that should be the law so that it takes any guess work and stops people from putting it in the wrong place.

    WOW! It's been a while since I've had my above ground pool and the new codes...again WOW! never heard of bonding. Last pool I had was the grounding rod and then ground the pool and the pump to that. I have a lot to catch up on. Thanks for the video...looks like I'll be digging and laying copper wire to the pool. Excellent demonstration!

    FYI - Have a 18’ pool , 96’ of copper wire was enough to bond it , also I continuously ran the wire to my four points of contact, I didn’t splice a separate piece of wire to the metal posts, some places require a continuous loop and didn’t want to take a chance and get it wrong. Hope this helps someone

    • @stevenwallace3282
      @stevenwallace3282 Год назад

      @rozebiz I finally found other information that says to get a skimmer bonding plate. Start at bonding plate, bury the wire all the way around pool and terminate from beginning location. Then take copper bonding wire from pump and attach to skimmer plate as well. I have an all resin sided pool so there is no where to drill on posts of pool. Just one continuous wire around circumference of pool wall about 12 inches away from pool.

    • @MGKPoolServiceLowell
      @MGKPoolServiceLowell  5 лет назад

      Yes. you can attach bonding wire to the wall down in the cove area. 1 inch off the floor you should not puncture the liner

    • @michaelwas8549
      @michaelwas8549 4 года назад

      I was told by my pool installer that because the posts are resin in my pool I just need to run the #8 ring around the pool and complete the bond to the water and motor bond. They said they left a #8 wire that they connected to the metal ring around the bottom of the pool that is steel. That will complete the shell bond.

    Canadian Electrician here. I haven't done grounding/bonding around pools before. What you're describing here sounds like a ground ring, not bonding. I've only installed ground rings around power generating facilities like Cogen plants and around large backup diesel generators for hospitals ect. I know the difference between grounding and bonding but I still don't understand why you need a ground ring around the pool. Wouldn't an insulated equipment bond wire from that plate to the pump chassis be the way to go? If not, why?

    • @bryonbrandon8429
      @bryonbrandon8429 4 года назад

      It is bonding, not grounding. You are creating an equipotential bonding plane to reduce voltage gradients. It is controversial, but it is required by our National Electrical Code section 680.26

    • @MGKPoolServiceLowell
      @MGKPoolServiceLowell  4 года назад +1

      I'm not an electrician or have any specific training. It's about creating a field so you cant reach a different potential. All I know

    • @gregmorris6604
      @gregmorris6604 2 года назад

      Think of throwing a rock in a pool of water and watch the ripples go out in all directions. You would get a different potential across those ripples. I'm a journeyman lineman and its important for us to understand this. If we have a phase to ground incident you need to stand still or take very small steps because current runs through the ground like that ripple in the pool. You take a big step and you have one voltage in one leg and another voltage at the other. It can kill you. So that circle ground around the pool makes a lot of sense to me. I'm fixing to upgrade our intek pool we bought last year to a Hayward system and I came across this because I wanted to see if I needed to bond the pump. I'm glad I found this video. Since its a soft sided pool I take it I just need to bond the pump.

    • @MGKPoolServiceLowell
      @MGKPoolServiceLowell  2 года назад +1
