    This style is useful for experienced IFR pilots to pick up tips and tricks. Learning requires a different style. You are clear from the beginning it’s about the Avidyne so good job. You nay sayers plz be advised. 🤓

    Also a good lesson on why you really need to be familiar with your equipment before you fly hard IFR! Well done!

    Thank you so much for this video. 5 minutes explained a lot that would have been difficult to learn in the air.

    I've read the Pilot's Guide front to back and have never picked up on these incredibly helpful ways of dealing with the Gap and the placement of the approach re: the destination airport. I'm new to the IFD540 and I'm starting my IFR training, so this was 2 hours of education in 5 minutes! Besten Dank!

      You are very welcome, Lynne! Glad I could help you learn something new about your IFD.
      Best of luck for your instrument training!

    Great video ! I also saw your complete twin training .
    It is noteworthy to say that if you are using autopilot when you load activate leg remember that you are on heading mode. When ATC says for example turn right 060 to intercept the final approach course, you got to turn 060 on heading mode first and then once at that heading do not forget to switch to NAV mode. Kind of the same concept if you are given vectors to final, after the last heading given to intercept you have to switch to NAV or approach given how far out you are.

    I have mostly flown Garmin equipped aircraft recently, so that´s a nice recap for my next flight with the IFD. Danke!

    Thanks Martin! I've been flying with my IFD440 for over 4 years now and have never used the activate leg function, but I can see where it is more useful than selecting vectors to final. From now on, that's what I'll do!

      Glad you found it useful. "Activate Leg" is a great feature, not just on the IFD but also on the older Garmin GNS and the new GTNs. For example, you can load an instrument approach to a runway while on a VFR flight, and when you activate the leg to the runway you will get a magenta line on your map which shows your final - very helpful for VFR pattern planning and entry.

    For the vectors to final, you can use the distance remaining if the FAF is the waypoint the straight vector leg is based off of. On your example, it has 6NM at the bottom of the profile view between the step-down fix prior to the FAF and the FAF. So when you see 6NM to the FAF waypoint on the display, you'd begin your manual descent.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  2 года назад

      Sure - but why? I find it easier to load the extra legs such that the waypoints on the chart match the ones in the GPS flight plan and on the electronic map.

      @@martinpauly fair, but it's a way to navigate the step-downs legally with just the straight line. Just providing a legal way since your example of following the moving map on an iPad isn't (like you said) is all!

    To eliminate the gap in route select the most appropriate IAF (based on your direction of flight to destination) as a waypoint in your flight plan. KCID WILTI KMUT. Loading the full approach, as you suggest is always better than choosing Vectors. Well done!

    Good morning… I really enjoyed your Avidyne videos. I have just purchased a Cirrus that has an EX5000 C… I see many videos that show how to update the databases, but I have yet to find a good tutorial video on just using the MSD. Can you point me in a direction?
    Thx

      Sorry, I have no experience with updating the databases on a system like that.

    Hi Martin -- Can you share which items you have displayed in your data blocks when you have your map display up on your IFD 540?

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  2 года назад

      You can see that in some of my other videos, Mark, where I show the IFD on cross country flights. Typically I have ground speed and zulu time on top (always visible), and on the right side I have active waypoint and destination waypoint info (time/distance), and a flight timer.

    Martin, what happened to Part 4 - I can't find it and really want your take on how to best configure the data blocks.

      I haven't gotten around to it yet, John - too many things competing for my time these days. They are not really complicated to use - just a really nice feature of the IFDs.

      @@martinpauly I agree on the not difficult to use part. I'm just looking for "best practice" for IFR work. Maybe you could just share how you have yours set up. Those 3 videos are really good because they're short and to the point BTW. I hate wading through 20 minutes of babble to get one useful nugget of information.

      @@martinpauly Oh ok. I didn’t realize it had been that long ago. I am about 90 percent through my PPL and I am looking at my first plane to possibly purchase this weekend!! It is currently VFR only right now so I am looking for at least a 430W to become IFR capable to get my instrument rating in it after my PPL

      I'm afraid there won't be a part #4, as I no longer have the equipment in my panel to make it.
