    Good stuff, tried it on my IFD trainer, could load 2 approaches but couldn't do it for the same airport to practice 2 different approaches at the same airport

    I was intrigued so I flew your flight on FSX in a F33 Bonanza with a Garmin GTN 650. Your Avidyne really does make it easier being able to pre load both approaches. Thanks for doing this video!

    Martin, this is great stuff. Do you have a video somewhere that shows how to put two approaches to the same airport in the Avidyne? You talk about it as your #2 reason (Backup Approach) but the demo only shows different approaches to different airports.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  3 года назад +1

      I don't have a video of it, but it's fairly easy to do if you add the same airport twice into your flight plan. Then you can select a different approach for each, and merge them together in any way you see fit.

    Martin, excellent learning on the IFD! I appreciate it since I have the IFD540 myself. It’s a great unit! I had forgot, according to Avidyne manual, you can load multiple approaches at the same time so it was great to see it put into action. I could also see using this procedure by putting in your alternate approach as well. Thanks again for sharing! Don/NE Ohio

    Great videography, Martin. You are an ace. I love this feature and always use it when my Garmin buddies are along on my IMC practice approach sessions or when my Garmin instructor/friend is giving me an IPC. However, I struggle with modifying the sequence when ATC changes a runway or some other change forces an airborne modification of the pre-entered sequence. I also wasn't able to put in two different approaches to the same airport the other day in mid-sequence. I think I also have problem putting in a return-to-home-airport approach after doing a home-airport approach either at the start of the sequence or later in the sequence. I'll take better notes when this happens so I can discuss nuances with you. As Christine (at Avidyne tech support) once told me - 'It seems like the 540 was designed by a pilot' because it was. What a great piece of equipment. Coupling it with G5 electronic flight instruments makes IMC flying so easy and so enjoyable.

      Hi Todd, you bring up some good points. The "multiple approaches" capability of the Avidyne IFDs is another tool available to us pilots, but that does not mean it is always a useful thing in every case. I think it is very useful if there is a short-paced sequence of approaches with little probability of changes.
      I have yet to get an EFIS. It's encouraging to have so many more choices available today than just a few years ago. It'll happen for me at some point... but first I have to get my new engine ($$$).
      Best regards, Martin

    Nice, Martin. I have been doing this in the Garmin navigators from the GNS forward by setting the additional approaches up in the flight plan catalog. That requires one additional step, loading the next plan. It does the job, but the IFD seems to do it more gracefully. Something to pass on to my Avidyne peeps!

    Awesome. Thanks for the Avidyne videos. I’m working on flying a procedure and then setting up the next one at the same airport. Sometimes it loads but sometimes it’s difficult. I may be missing the notes on the screen like stopping the missed procedure and then trying to load the next approach while it’s trying to go missed.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  4 года назад

      Thanks, Tim. I believe the thing people struggle with when setting up multiple approaches at the SAME airport is: that airport needs to be in the flight plan multiple times then, once for each approach. Otherwise you'll end up REPLACING the previously loaded approach, as opposed to adding a new one.
      Best regards, Martin

    • @martinpauly

      Yes, I didn't log these approaches, obviously. It's hard to find weather here in Iowa in the winter which allows me to log approaches - when it's cloudy, we usually have icing. Good thing spring is coming!

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  4 года назад

      @@robincole5739 Probably not. If a trip takes me to the area, I would go to Dulles and check off another Class Bravo airport. The airports closer to D.C. take a lot of work to get approved for - I won't be in the area often enough to make that worthwhile.

    I see you switched from Wing X over to ForeFlight....any particular reason?

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  4 года назад

      Yes... Over the last year, starting with version 9, WingX had become pretty buggy, and I wasn't sensing much urgency from the vendor to fix what was broken.
