19:45 The E36's S50 engine was bespoke and not a run of the mill engine 'turned up to 11'. Seems strange to me that the E36 gets so much criticism when it laid the foundations for the E46 which everyone raves about, they're basically the same car underneath. The main complaint about the E36 at the time was the slow steering rack which can be easily swapped out for a faster one.
SMG was first available in the e36 not the e46. And the e36 saloon is lighter and stiffer than the coupe. And Dan should try and get a drive in a e36 318is motorsport 2. What a cool car they are.
Someone needs to lend Andrew their E90/92 M3 as I’m sure his views would change now and both of them need to drive a manual F80 M3. Would love to hear Dan’s thoughts on the manual G80 and why he thinks it’s much better than the new M2. Really enjoyed this episode!
The problem I find with these type of journalist reviews vs the real world is that they're (understandably) only talking about bog standard factory cars, whereas the vast majority of owners understand the flaws of these cars and modify them accordingly. Just simple brake and suspension upgrades utterly transform both the E36 and E92 M3s into something far beyond the OEM cars. The underlying architecture of these cars are fabulous platforms, and that's what the enthusiasts come to really appreciate.
I've never understood the idea of celebrating turbocharged engines that don't feel turbocharged. That bit of lag, the feeling of the boost building, isn't that part of what makes them so thrilling? I love a good normally aspirated engine too, but for very different reasons. Both are great but, when you try to make a turbo motor feel normally aspirated, it will inevitably have loads of mid-range torque that the normally aspirated unit wouldn't have, so it ends up feeling a bit false to me. It feels like the worst of both worlds somehow.
@E12m535i isn't that part of the fun though? Like I said, both normally-aspirated and turbocharged engines can be brilliant, I just think you end up in a weird, compromised place when you try to make one feel like the other
Totally agree, im. a avid Bmw collector and current owner of few S54, and 2 E30, one that I daily and has over half million Km, They best 4 cylinders M car ever made, lovely cars, the Racing history proofs your point and facts are facts.
Every other M3 : It’s man and machine working in harmony. F80 M3: It’s Man vs Machine fighting to see who is the master! Just like how 80s supercars used to be! Hairy chested!!
What was Andrews view on the e92 GTS? He was talking about the M4 GTS for a minute or so before clicking on the car in subject was the e92 GTS! Just curious :)
I remember having a test drive in an E92 M3 Coupe Manual back in about 2012 and thought it was a real let down. Sounded great but just didn't seem that quick at all. It was also very twitchy at the limit and very hard riding...I ended up buying a 996.2 Carrera 4 Manual instead...
I owned an E90 M3 DCT for 2 years and its one of the only cars ive sold that I miss. I own a 991 Carrera now but the short gearing and balance over the limit of that E90 I still think of to this day.
I’m a manual guy, but…I have an M2 CS pdk 2020, excellent cat but I don’t daily drive it (i have just 24,000 km) I drove recently a manual G80 m3 with the track pack and I immediately fell in love with this car. I live in Poland and here I can order the manual M3. What do you think that I should change the M2 CS for the M3 manual? In terms of residuals I think both car are special …
He wishes the E 36 didn’t come next, didn’t like it because it wasn’t a homologation car (which would’ve meant it had a four-cylinder and no one would’ve bought it just like almost no one bought the E30 M3) he says it didn’t have a special engine and then says the E 46 had the best engine…when it was nearly identical to the one out of the E 36 M3 🤦♂️ proper bell end. E 46 was a slightly heavier/stiffer E 36 with a 2000s body kit and worse front wheel hubs.
the very first SMG gearbox was in E36 M3 gen2, and i think current gen g80 M3 comp is very underappreciated one, its way better car to drive great all around car the best since e30 and e46
E30 over rated, I'm afraid. Engine is wheezy and sounds coarse. Steering isn't that great. Car is bloody slow. Etc. It's ultimately all about the looks. It's a great looking little box. If it didn't look so good, nobody would really care. Not that it's terrible to drive, it's just not that great to drive.
I disagree with your comments and view of the E36 M3 coupe the S50B30 is a masterpiece of an engine, beautifully revving engine. a well balanced chassis which is still light & throttle cable.
Fact check: So they did actually make an SMG E36 M3. The engine that you think is so marvellous in the E46 was literally a development of the E36’s. Still baffles me how the impression and talk about the E36 is so poor when it came out (and the bandwagon continues!) yet it was voted best handling car, and had over 100bhp per litre. So many attributes that are apparently lost on you! A few subtle tweaks to a standard E36 M3 and it’s one of the best cars ever made. Boo to the both of you! 🤨 And, yes of course this is the passionate writing of someone who’s had one for 13 years! 😅
I still don’t understand how anyone things the G80 series cars sound good, yet I hear that often so maybe it’s me. They sound far less bad than the prior generation but still nothing truly decent

And you could get it in an smg
The 3.0 E36 is a different beast to a 3.2 Evo, which is more like the E46
It's easier to parrot your peers' opinions. Lazy journalism.
Do think that they need to go back and drive all of them like M5 generations.
@@KarlkEst I'd definitley watch that

I'd love one on the Civic Type R. It's been through loads of changes, good and bad but overall it's one of the all time great hot hatch legends.
SMG I was available on the E36 M3....I support TI, but when the founders do not know cars intimately ...it gets a bit challenging

E36 M3 is my favorite of all of them, fight me
you need to try a few other models.....

finally someone said this
I agree with you
I agree, but in an M car you want natural aspiration so I think them trying to replicate that experience makes sense
To try the best real turbo what cars should I buy to feel the woosh? No budget
They are a pain in the arse to skid if they aren’t linear

I really hope that the next Neue Klass 3 series will be good , we need M3 to stay legend it is.
Great Pod keep it up 🤟❤

E30 M3, the real M3. The OG, Homologated. End of story
Having an E30 M3 and tried the modern ones.. does not make me change it, its difficult to explain
GT3 / Metzger engine please?
Really like your Podcast and Love your writting on the website, but this time a bit more research would have helped.
Agreed

It's really interesting knowing about a regular ish car rather than the million pound exotica how about the fiesta as an icon episode
Yep or the focus
M2 is the true inheritor of the m3s lineage
F80 is an m5
F82 is m6
I would love a discussion on where the m2 ranks in the history of m3s

How about an ICONS episode about the Mini? Give a like if you agree 👍
The E30 M3 has reached the cost level for those who can afford to those who can maintain it.
Type R, please.
Shut up, dude! This is a BMW hour!
Yes, there was E36 SMG.

Correct…
You guys should do your homework before streaming…
This. Doesn't help with their credibility making so many factual errors and not being aware of the limits of their knowledge.
Agreed. Disappointing performance

325iS Evolution 2.
No love for E21s?
Fact check: So they did actually make an SMG E36 M3.

ithe e36 had a crappy looking body and poor interior materials
@ thank you for your input, I’ll pop it on my opinions I don’t care about list.
I still don’t understand how anyone things the G80 series cars sound good, yet I hear that often so maybe it’s me. They sound far less bad than the prior generation but still nothing truly decent
I like these guys I do. Smart , articulate. But the plugs at the beginning I don’t like. I already pay for RUclips to get away from plugs and adverts
As an F80 owner, it's an unprecedented YES from me! The car has achieved full cult status globally.
Yeah cult status in blowing its crank hub. And lifeless playstation joystick steering.
For a few other icons just go to Audi. RS3, RS4 and RS6...
great talk!!! new beemers just fat over complicated shit boxes 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
its way over rated the e30 m3, better off in a well sorted 325i
No the E30 was not made for the inline six, it hangs off the nose like some poor Audi.
Talk about Porsche not BMW
They've talked about Porsche a million times
