- Odley Jean of the GoodCapp Arts Ensemble shares 'Deka's' story during Equality Now's 2016 'Make Equality Reality' gala. Deka, a 16-year-old girl from Brooklyn, was subjected to female genital mutilation (FGM) while visiting relatives on a family vacation in Somalia. She becomes one of the over 500,000 girls impacted by FGM in the USA.
Deka's story is one of the pieces from 'Her Story, Uncut' - written and directed by Katie Cappiello. www.KatieCappiello.com
Horrendous child abuse commited by her family. They never even warned her because deep inside they knew she would not approve because it is wrong to inflict such crime on their children.
Shame on them. God does not Approve
I started crying as soon as you said you entered the room. GOD. I AM SO SORRY. I SWEAR I WISH I COULD TAKE EVERY WOMANS PLACE. IM SO SORRY. IM SO SORRY.......IM SO SORRY. EVERYONE THAT HAS ENDURED THIS. YOU ARE A WARRIOR. I LOVE YOU.......
I AM SO SORRY...........
I AM SO SORRY........
Thank you for sharing you story. You have helped so many women just by letting them know they are not alone. I love u all and I just thank you for your courage.
😢 This angers me her own family did not protect her and her sister , I am so sorry this happened to you I m sending love . As a mother of two kids one being a girl and one being a boy I would never let that happen thank you for speaking out and I hope justice comes to all those who have been through this abuse including yours ❤
I love all of you. It makes me feel beyond the feeling of anger, frustration, tension, that this is happening to so many little girls. I hope and I wish so damn badly, this is world will get better. I don't have any hope. But you, are the last I have of hope. The people like you, who share their stories, all over the world, are what give me hope. You are beyond brave and you are beyond the feeling of what grace is. You are beautiful. Thank you, for sharing your story. I am so, so sorry. But I know that no amount of "I'm sorry"s, will fill the gapping hole you have to deal with.
Those aren’t parents those are monsters 😢
Exactly what I was thinking
Unfortunately those monter mothers had it done to them and they continue this gross child sexual abuse of the very worst kind. Shameful culture based on superstition and pleasing uneducated ogres aka men who want this 😢
Wow, bless your hearts! This is soo hurtful as part of culture🥺
She’s amazing
I swear she the 🐐🐐
Omggggg she’s amazing
I’m Moved . Then she ate her role on Grand Army 5 years later .
Id never forgive my mum if i went through what deka and lailo went through
I am so sorry love
Absolutely terrible 😢
This is not love 🥺
I’m so disgusted I have no words. This is unconscionable.
So so sad
What did the surgery do to her?
It basically stitched up her vagina so that she can't have sex until she is married and her husband snips the wire.
This shows that she is a virgin before birth.
It is absolutely terrible and is child abuse
It made it to where she’s pure for her husband so they sew them up down there (I’d look it up to get a better explanation for yourself)
Female genitalia mutilation.

Female Genital Mutilation

Circumcision in boys and girls: why the double standard? This is strange; how many "studies" have been performed in female circumcision to see if it has any "benefits?" Would such "studies" ever be deemed acceptable? What if "studies" showed the exact same "benefits?" Would we then argue that it is "acceptable practice" for parents to opt for? But I think the bigger question is, what is the reason that there are even "studies" on male circumcision? Isn't it a little backwards to be placing primacy on trying to legitimize a surgical procedure as opposed to finding other better, safer, more effective, less invasive means of providing "medical benefit?" Does anybody else not see it strange that "researchers" are seeking ways to legitimize surgical procedure in the males only & not woman?
Let’s get this straight. Even if it’s not 100% necessary, male circumcision has benefits FOR THE MALE BODY. It is performed FOR male benefits. Meanwhile female genital mutilation has NO benefits, it literally only causes harm. It is done to little girls for the benefit of men. FGM procedures are done to little girls, for men, it is done so her future husband knows she is a virgin and can cut her genitalia open on their wedding night and to ensure she feels no pleasure during intercourse cause apparently men have a problem with their wives showing pleasure . FGM is typically done in the back of a church by a family member with no medical experience and a hot RAZOR, meanwhile male circumcision is done in a clean hospital by a professional doctor, anesthesia and instructions for healthy healing processes. So let’s get this straight, circumcision is done FOR MEN. It helps men with cleansing their bodies (hygiene), meanwhile FGM is done to little girls, also FOR MEN. There’s nothing even partially comparable between these two procedures.
Is she reciting someone else's story??? Becuz isnt she odley jean??
Yes
Ahhh i swear ive seen her somewhere... a movie? a show? Something on Netflix
She’s from grand army
Grand army
isn't this like male circumcision?
Yes in a way, they’re like 4 different ways it’s done. Sometimes just the labia or the labia and the clit, and no benefits just long term effects and pain.
Can also be done by “covering” cutting and positioning the labia to more or less narrowing the vagina
No. This is absolutely NOT like male circumcision. this is a procedure that is not medically necessary & banned in many areas over the world. This practice has many, many health risks and issues that can be caused. Male circumcision happens when they are a baby and they are numbed. Male circumcision can prevent different infections. These women are not numbed and it is not an ethical practice. There are absolutely no health benefits.
It’s equivalent to cutting the tip of the penis.
not at all. male circumsion can have psychological consequences (ie. feeling like something is missing) but it isn't physically harmful whereas FGM has major physical consequences like constant infections, not being able to have a proper period (blood doesn't come out all the way) which can cause fibroids inside the woman which can lead to severe consequences if not removed via surgery, can't pee properly which can cause kidney failure and death down the line, trouble having sex, trouble giving birth, etc. and many many women die from the bleeding whilst they cut, or die during childbirth, male circumsion has a death rate of virtually zero.
She’s lying..more like, she’s acting. This never happened to her personally. Odley Jean girl, WHYYYYYYYY?? Why not let real victims speak their horrific experiences? I’ll give you that, you sure can act sis. You’re not even African. YOU’RE HAITIAN.
Did you ever think that maybe the real victim didn’t want to speak? If you do you research you’ll know how connected Haitian culture is to African cultures and why that is.
If you really want to find out how the real victim feels about her story being shared like this, you can go to the website www.katiecappiello.com/herstoryuncut# and email the creator of this story and find out where she got her inspiration
She is allowed to do this. And if she got the approval to do so then she is DAMN sure allowed to do this. And her being Haitian gives her the space to do this. But bless up sis 🥴🤞🏽🙏🏽
Real victim or not, I can almost feel the pain endured as a child.
You're trying to discredit her when you know this is very real for every girl who has gone through this, Instead of standing together as women.
It's not a lie, it's a representation.
I wonder why you feel it's more important to discredit her instead of lending your support against these horrific practices.
May you find some peace.
It's in the description that she's reciting
Shut tf up, she’s clearly doing this for someone elses bc they don’t wanna do it, how about minding your business and stop being an asshole
