I'm sitting here right now going through your videos one by one... and I cannot imagine a more enjoyable way to spend my Saturday night! :) Your artworks are amazing and the videos are so thorough and helpful. The thing that I find most wonderful is your willingness to share all of this information... things that have taken you years to learn, yet you share it freely. You have a very generous and kind heart and I thank you so much for that! :)
That's so awesome idea! I use Photoshop for create compositions, for drawing, editing my reference for painting...but not in that way, I use it for Ilustrations, and now, you open my horizon to use Photoshop to order my ideas and create my designs! Thank you Lisa!❤❤❤
I always plan my paintings in photoshop first, its a tip i learnt in Painting class in my final year at school, and I use it for every painting I do now. Its great knowing what proportions look best before I go near the canvas and much it up.
Seriously, Lisa! I've been photo maniping in PS for years. I never thought to use it to design a painting. I've learned so much from you in the last few days (since I found your channel). Thank you!
Lisa, thanks for the generous way you share your processes. Watching your speed paintings is such a joy. My wish though would be to hear the dialogue in your head as you paint. The decision process, the brushstroke choices, the validation points... The communication between your linear LEFT brain and your creative RIGHT brain and how they both work together to get your amazing results. Any chance you can multitask like that while demonstrating a dog portrait? I love your fur techniques and would appreciate your thought processes.
I make little sketches on little frames to se the flow and composition, then I see diferent photos, drawings and paintings for illumination and color ideas and then i work with the combination that suits more to the original idea (just combining tips from diferent artists around the internet). I´m new in your channel and i just love what you´re doing, specially the vlogs about tips and advice.
Photoshop, like you. Just went through several sunflowers (and sunflower parts) 14 different butterfly's to realize that using just 1 instead of 3, and a position of the wings/face made a whole heck of a big difference. Painting will be 18 x 20 when completed (sized to scale as yours). My first 100% Inktense painting - just got my sets of 72, pencils and blocks! Woohoo! can't wait.
if you have CoralDRAW you could take your Photoshop file in there have it to size (of canvas). When you print from coralDRAW you can set up tiling even with over lap print it out on 8.5 by 11 paper tape it together chalk or charcoal the back and trace it on the canvas. Corel is great for tiling and you can make a tiled image as big as 128 feet by 128 feet niiiice
i'm transitioning into traditional art after doing digital for 15 years. I was going to do this, but I wasn't sure if it work out, but I think you've confirmed that it is a clever tool and a good idea. I've done it loads before for my digital work, I call them thumbnails except they're not thumbnails, they're the same size as yours.
I've been thinking about doing this. I just wasn't sure if that was 'cheating'. I also watched your video on tracing. I feel so liberated, haha. I am loving your videos and am binge watching them. I'm also following you on Instagram. You are amazing! Thank you for being so candid and real. It's so helpful :)
I just watched the video on Artist Tips: Improve Artwork or Career which was amazing and made me think about what I want.. then this video... WOW.. Photoshop is amazing. I am 54 and do have any Photo Shop skills, but I have just added "Learn Photo Shop" to my list of goals.. :) Thank You so very much for your tutorials and blogs. ((( HUGS ))) :) < me smiling from ear to ear.
I sketch and practically work based on that drawing. I think that the Photoshop tip you are using is going to help me a lot with backgrounds and stuff related with nature since most of my work is about characters and people.
That's a great idea to use the pilates ball instead of a chair. I have been trying to figure out how to solve my back strain while in my studio and your inadvertent tip is just what I needed. I'm getting a pilates ball! Great video production. It wasn't messed up at all:
Haha!! That's awesome. Do a google search on 'what size pilates ball do I need" or something like that, it varies by your height. Mine is a 65cm and I'm short. If you go too small it doesn't work right =)
Thanks! This is very helpful. (I'm a female and I'm short too). I've tried different types of chairs and none of them have helped. I think the pilates ball is a brilliant idea. (BTW- do you have any tips on art studio organizing and paint tube holders? Maybe a video on this some time? I am a full time artist, with tons of supplies: paint, canvases, brushes, pencils, pastels, paper, a computer, etc, and I have a small studio. It's challenging trying to stay organized.)
I usually carry my paintings in my head for a few weeks as I sort what I expect to see. When I think I have it sorted out, I test the composition and pallet choice on the back of a sanded and primed regulation poker sized playing card. Then I sell or give those away. I should use my tablet more to sketch and have been experimenting with it. Is there a particular stylus you use?
I started using GIMP (free software) for trying out digital art compositions, from my original sketches. It's great for trialing different colour combinations, where objects are best placed, lighting filters, etc. But I've never thought of using it to put a specific design together, for a canvas. It just makes sense though.
New to your site. LOVE IT. Sometimes the technology doesn't work where I live so I do it the old school way (retro) :) by sketching thumbnails with things in different places (various tones and colors) until I think I've got the composition I want. Then drawing each item on a different see-thru tracing paper (or cutting them out), layer them and move them into the position I like. Transfer that sketch onto the canvas and go from there. This retro way also serves to improve my sketching skills and gives me practice drawing the subject before starting but I can totally see how your way is much faster. I don't have Photoshop but may have to invest. I have Printshop so I might be able to do some of the same things with that if I figure out how.
Leslie Vasquez As long as you can cut out an object and move around layers, other photo editors should work fine. You're not trying to make something print worthy so you don't need the best editor out there :)
I rarely if ever "design" paintings from scratch. As a member of PMP, there is such a huge selection of images that I can invariably find ones that appeal to me. That said, I will often want to include something that isn't there or change a color or a person, or move or eliminate something. And I would be totally lost without Photoshop! IOW, I have used it not to design but to redesign an image. I have also begun to combine different images. Speaking of which, did you notice the eye dropper tool on the tool bar? It's in the right hand column, 3rd tool (think it's the third) down. You can use it on any layer to sample down to a pixel level (if you enlarge it to that level). You do not need a fill layer. You could probably also create a nice little swatch layer for the colors you've sampled and print that out. I've never done one but have sampled PMP photos when I wanted more precise color info.
Hi Lisa, great video as usual, but I have to warn you to be careful of presenting on a pilates ball. I had a very embarrassing moment on live tv doing exactly the same. I used to present a psychic tv show in the uk and I would often be sat on my ball as you couldn't see what was going on below my waist. On one of the shows, I was in full swing and the ball just burst! All you could see on camera was my head suddenly dropping down as I disappeared onto the floor. Unfortunately as it was live tv it couldn't be edited out. Lots of laughs for everyone watching but not my finest hour lol . Keep up the great work you are doing I feel that I learn something new everytime I watch your videos :-)
That is the exact reason I will only use the anti-burst ones lol. My bigger issue is in falling off the thing. I like to sit on top with my legs folded on top of each other, sort of yoga style. I've lost my balance and hit the floor so many times. Luckily its not that far of a fall =D
Lisa, this is a great video on how you do design. This is a great creative tool that can give you what you want and where you want it. I know you do not want to train how to use Photoshop, but to you have any tips of who's training videos may be best to try for learning Photoshop or Corel PantShop pro. Thanks for all you do. :)
I don't have any specific videos to send you to. What I did (and still do) when learning was to just start a project and when I got stuck on something I would do a google search for each specific issue I was having. Like "How do I crop a photo in photoshop" etc. There are always tons of answers and videos that come up for anything you're having trouble doing :)
So, I usually do a very rough sketch with little to no details at first, just to get my ideas on paper. Then I think about what medium I want to use and what feel I want the piece to have and whatnot. After that I try it out on paper till the composition feels right. If I like it enough, I'll do a bigger piece on paper, not confined to my sketchbook. That's my new method anyway. I haven't done many full-sized, fleshed out pieces in a few years. I'm getting back into my art though and although I neither have photoshop or the first clue on how to use it, I will look into it with regards to helping me layer all my reference photos in a pleasing composition for my actual pieces. Sorry for the long response. Question: does the pilates ball work that well for back pain, because my back acts up on me when I'm on the computer for long or when I'm on my stool at the easel. I also have bad posture that adds to my problems and was wondering if the pilates ball will help my posture or possibly make it worse. Thanks.
Artist in the Shadows Yep, the ball is the only way I can sit for long periods of timebecause of the arthritis in my back. Everyone's back problem is going to be different depending on the problem so what works great for some may not work for you. Most people love it though for helping with back pain :)
Hello Lisa, been trying to find the best photoshop app for my iPad. Would you suggest the best for us painters. Love all your vids thank you for all your lessons Luisa
I'm not sure with iPad, I use android products myself. I can give you the names though and you can see if they are available with ipad. I know for sure that you're going to have some great ones available...just not sure which ones. For drawing on my tablet I use Autodesk Sketchbook Pro for tablets. I use this for actually sketching in my tablet and doing digital paintings. I also have the actual photoshop app on my tablet for photoediting, but that is really REALLY limited compared to their desktop version so I don't use it to design pieces like I showed in this video :)
I love watching your work. But what I have never got is what you just technically did. If you take a hole bunch of different pictures and combine it into one, is it techically your art work since you combined all into one piece of artwork. Or is it still someone elses, and you have to give credit to all those pictures?
so so helpful! I have all these ideas for painting projects, I just couldnt figure out how I could create a reference photo. so thank You Lisa! youre a God send! I did have one quick Q: How were you able to get each photo to fit so perfectly? esp the waterfall It seemed to have fit perfectly onto your taped paper. Did you just simply crop or did use some sort of blending tool?
Had no idea this was "allowed". I also thought it was cheating. I always thought I could never paint because I always had to paint from my head but I have a difficult time painting or drawing anything unless I can actually see it. Thanks for posting this. I'm going to try it.
Mindy Gallo Why exactly did you think it's "Cheating"? it's just a clever way of setting the composition of an original painting/ an idea you have. I used to think that using the grid is cheating, because I saw it as a way for less talented people to sketch in proportions. But really, there's no such thing as "Cheating" in art (Unless you claim to be the original painter of somebody else's piece).
I have the same samsung galaxy note and I was curious what app you use to sketch and how you use it as a portfolio. Thanks so much and I love your videos.
Morgan Snyder I used Autodesk Sketchbook pro, although on principal I don't recommend that company anymore because after having you pay for each the phone and tablet version, they discontinued both and made a single version and expect everyone to pay for it all over again if they want the pro version. Good developers offer a discount or something similar when they do something like that for people who paid for past products. I won't give them money again because I don't trust them not to do the same thing in the future. I don't mind paying for apps but the way they handled that one really upset a lot of their users.
Ive never designed my own that I can think of..which is TERRIBLE. Ive either looked at actual photos and recreated them, or I've copied a picture of my favorite movie/ tv characters, But I've never actually put a real painting/ drawing together on my own. Definitely something I need to try!

This has got to be the best video yet!! I would have never even thought of this!! I draw mine and takes a long time. Thank you
You literally just blew my mind! I have been freehand sketching all of my paintings!
This was possibly the most helpful thing I have seen! Thank you sooo much for sharing this.
I love your work. Particularly these type of paintings.
+Bill Lawton Thanks :)

I have never thought of using digital art to design. I think I will definitely give this a go to help me design future projects. Thank you
awesome to see! As a photographer I have learned more and more that PRE-production is so important. I enjoyed seeing how you do your prepro.

Such a great idea!
Going to try this with an idea I have for the 4th of July.
:)
Great idea! Thanks for the tip!!
great tips i usually try to imagine what something will look like but it never looks very good thank you for making this video its so helpful =D
Thank you for the info it answered my question for sure.

I'm in love with this woman
Nice video!
I actually do the exact same thing for my paintings xD
Looove it! Thank you for sharing:)
This is so helpful! Thank you so much :D
This vlog was such a huge help. It answered all of my questions. Thank you so very much for showing us your methods. Now, to go buy photoshop lol
If you're not used to working in photoshop, it does take a bit to get the hang of but totally worth it in the end =D
Awesome
What a great idea!
I do pretty much the same things you do, but I use Corel Paintshop pro more than I use Photoshop. I love your Vlogs. Thank you so much.
Awesome planning
Thanks so much Lisa for this great tutorial. What version of photoshop are you using for this tutorial?
This was so helpful !
Hi Lisa, great video as usual, but I have to warn you to be careful of presenting on a pilates ball. I had a very embarrassing moment on live tv doing exactly the same. Very helpful. Thanks.
awesome idea :-)
and this video is so awesome!
I just love you so much right now

So, I usually do a very rough sketch with little to no details at first, just to get my ideas on paper. Hello Lisa, been trying to find the best photoshop app for my iPad. Would you suggest the best for us painters. Love all your vids thank you for all your lessons

I love watching your work. But what I have never got is what you just technically did. If you take a hole bunch of different pictures and combine it into one, is it techically your art work since you combined all into one piece of artwork. Or is it still someone elses, and you have to give credit to all those pictures?
Aeroiny If I copy any portion of a photo exactly, I need to have permission to use it from the photographer.
Thank you.
so so helpful!
Hijabi Picasso When I design the image in photoshop, I use the exact dimensions that I will be painting on so that the design fits perfectly :)
Can you do a fur tutorial? (for like dogs- wolves, cats, etc)?
I need to, good suggestion =D Thanks!

Nothing wrong with that, its usually easier to develop your technique by copying a photo. This will add one more challenge to the mix for you now =D
I have the same turquoise bird that's in the background. Shopping at Hobby Lobby I see?;)
HAHAHA Yep!! The glass snails on the vanity behind me are also from my adventures at Hobby Lobby =P
Is it important to use prismacolors and faber castell color pencils . Can you do a tutorial with camlin color pencils because in India we don t find prismacolors
What version of photoshop do you use. I have looked into it but there are so many different things availed when searching. Thanks!!! :)
+Bobbie Taylor i use CS5 and its great for stuff like what she mentions in the video
is there an ado I could use in place of Photoshop?
Hi do you or anyone know of a place that I can go to work for art supplys?
Is that the shelf from your cat/pumpkin painting?
+Elijah Paull It's similar :)

can i borrow the idea of a picture within a picture?
im not sure how to blend the fur on animals need more tips . is it the sketch pad the paint or the brush.that i may be using the wrong material
