Lyrics:
I lost my city in the light of day
Thick smoke
Helicopter blades
Heaven and earth I've never moved so fast
You'll never know the fear your mama has
I know your father can't call anymore
He never meant to be a man of war
But we found freedom what will you do now
Bury the burden baby make us proud
I lost my city in the light of day
Thick smoke
Helicopter blades
Why would I bother to remember when
Our people baby die and live again
Look at this one
I want you to see
Fashion was high
My hair was so long
This was maybe '73
You know I have been adored by good and kind men
They sent their love with poetry
By day I gave grand speeches
At night, like you
We danced to be free
I lost my city
In the prime of my time
Mud
Silk
And the dust of life
I was a diamond of the embassy
It doesn't matter what I meant to be
Girl you come from the fortunate ones
Gold
Sky
And a first born son
We don't have words for the way you have grown
We'll always feed you
You can always come home
Why would a million dare sink in the sea?
I don't want to say anymore
But I have been here before
I don't want to say anymore
Find what you need
I don't want to say anymore
But I have been here before
I have earned this sorrow
Mine to keep
I lost my city in the light of day
Thick smoke
Helicopter blades
Why would I bother to remember when
Our people baby die and live again
I lost my city in the light of day
Thick smoke
Helicopter blades
Heaven and earth I've never moved so fast
You'll never know the fear your mama has
I know your father can't call anymore
He never meant to be a man of war
But we found freedom what will you do now
Bury the burden baby make us proud

"We'll Always Feed You...You Can Always Come Home..."
My father always says this to my siblings and I.
Such a beautiful tribute to our ancestry
Amazing how this song makes me want to dance and cry at the same time.
Thank you Thao for such a beautiful wonderful song. I'm typing this with tears rolling on my cheeks. I'm also a first gen Vietnamese American born after the war from a South Vietnamese parents who lost their city in the light of day... The lyrics... the stories my mom told me, the pictures of her fashionable self in 1973 with high fashion posing next to a South Vietnamese aircraft with big big big sunglasses... and then the pain they had to go through... Then "Why would a million dare sink in the sea?" got me so bad... I couldn't see the computer screen with my eyes full of tears... Thank you so much for such a beautiful piece.

god, this song is so powerful and so raw. 'make us proud' at the end will always hit so different as a southeast asian kid. much love from the philippines, i've been a fan of yours since 2011 and it's always an experience when you drop something new.
Enjoyed this piece when I first started listening to the album a few weeks ago. When I finally started paying attention to the lyrics, I was floored. Crushed. Heartbroken. What a beautiful tribute to the loss, sorrow, and afterlives of war. The more I listen to it, the more I'm brought to tears. Wishing for peace and healing for all whose lives have been shaken by violence.
This is brilliant, Thao. Thank you for playing this live during PIVOT's fundraiser tonight. Your community loves, respects, and appreciates you.
Chị Thao là hay nhất!
I first listened to this song on youtube and thought it was ok. But I recently had the privilege to see Thao perform it live at Asbury Hall in Buffalo, NY. Hearing the story behind the song, seing and hearing the raw emotion made me appreciate it so much more and touched my heart to tears. The song made me think of my own mother and her struggles for freedom from Apartheid South Africa to make it to America and all the refugees and migrants risking their lives for freedom. I still think the live version was better, but now listening to the recorded version has so much more meaning. I sometimes use The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Ann Fadiman about Hmong refugees in USA. Fadiman brings up the Vietnam war, displaced people, and refugees. Next time I teach it I will definitely use this song as an introduction and another source . Thank you Thao, from a fellow daughter of a refugee!
This music video, this song is so impactful and emotionally provocative, in a good way. I saw one of the comments about how this song speaks a truth to the intergenerational trauma of the Vietnam War and just from the lyrics being paired with the visuals, I can definitely resonate with that, so much so that I found myself to be very emotional, moved to tears from your song, Chi Thao. This was awesome. I hope to meet and work with you one day
A beautiful masterpiece.
To speak the truth to the intergenerational trauma of the Vietnam war
Is this their only song inspired by this topic? New to the group.
@@chronic_johnson_a.r.a.b In a certain way, her whole album Man Alive was about the intergenerational trauma of the American war on Vietnam. Thao's family was very much shaped by her parents flight from Vietnam & she's doing the work of healing with her music. This song is the most graphically connected to her mother's story of fleeing that I know of.
Great song! It threw me in deep thought through your story. I was born so much later to understand things, but somehow I feel it even just a bit. Love from Vietnam
This song moves me to tears everytime. Like posters before, the only emotive is to cry.
these are the best lyrics I've heard in years. my girlfriend was a refugee from Vietnam, this song hits me right in the feels.
I just listened to this numerous times in a row - its so impactful! I'm also moved to tears by the story and poetry and sorrow. thank you for sharing a perspective of history many didn't get to experience.
Thao's back! It's a great vid, and the lyrics, such a powerful way of expressing so much emotion and story all at once and so beautifully done, it's almost hard to notice how deeply it speaks about mourning, if someone's not paying attention to the lyrics… i love it but now i'm crying 💜
cám ơn Thao! This video and song captured the beauty, strength, and sadness of a generation of Viet people. It made me think about my bố mẹ.
Some guitar phím lõm combined with great lyrics and great synth! THIS is what the world needs right now, brings tears to my eyes after living in Vietnam for 5 years
The brilliance of this song hit me like a bullet of diamond right through my forehead.
Beautifully written piece.
I am obsessed with this song.
I was once in the library, working on my thesis. This song came on Spotify. I stopped what I was doing, I just listened, and cried and cried.
Thank you for adding this to my 'Discover Weekly' playlist, Spotify. I'm obsessed.
heartbreaking, but inspiring song. thanks for sharing with us all, Thao
Haven’t heard something this crisp in a while
Proud Viet here!
I just love this song and listen to it everyday on my Spotify playlist. Wondered what it was about and came here to watch the video and find out. Means so much more now. Brought tears to my eyes. Very moved ❤️

@@anythingthoughanythingthou2453 I mean crying doesn't mean you lack mental fortitude
@@amberrambo thank you friend. i did.
Amazing track - how am I just hearing it now? Been digging Thao since Feet Asleep, exciting artist.
So cool! Dare to be different. Love the music and lyrics about the Vietnam war and what we've lost....yet so much was gained also through love and struggle.
This song is keeping me going
I heard a clip of We the Common on the Democracy Now! podcast this AM and am now binging on the group. What a great way to spend a quarantine morning at work (home). Incredible visuals and messages.
The most badass sounding song ive heard all week!!!
Super stoked to hear new music from Thao. Can't wait to see The Get Down Stay Down in Nashville in a couple months.😜🎸🎶
Yeah somethin tells me that ain't happening
my roommate showed me this song and it struck me so deeply both from a lyrical and contextual standpoint. like i just spent a solid 2 hrs reading up on thao's life, then on the vietnam war and the subsequent refugee crisis due to other countries' unwillingness to provide true consistent aid. im so greatful to thao for being such an incredibly dynamic and engaging artist 💖
also, does anyone have more info about the inspiration behind the choreography? ive been absolutely mesmerized by it
Wow. Beautiful and powerful stuff!
WOW!!! This song is great, the video is beautiful, currently losing my mind about getting a new album!!!💕💕💕
Maybe Thao's best song yet???
It’s definitely my favorite from her and the music video is incredible
This album is incredible! Topics we really need to be evaluating now.
i scanned my hamster with my snapchat camera and found this song
i love my hamster more than anything right now XD
This feels classic. Musical history
Beautiful
Haha! This is too cool that she's using her family in the video. I'm guessing it's her family. :)
Love this ❤️ . Lyrically deep and very special.
Lovely, Thao. Much love, Shar
This, following A Man Alive, is such a tribute to honoring ancestors and one's self at the same time.
I'm sad to hear of the breakup of the band, but looking forward to the next music of Thao Nguyen.
This made my Vietnam vet friend cry and say he was sorry you lost your city it was beautiful then he prays it's beautiful now.
Prayer is an insult keep that shit to your self.
this is really good
So happy you are making new music! See you in Chicago!
This is so beautiful!!
Just discovered you guys this morning and I absolutely LOVE your style! Keep it up and thank you for sharing your talent with us!
So amazing
Get down Thao! Go ahead get down!!!
Love 💘 this ❤
I search my own name and I found this. No regret 👍
A small masterpiece.
🥺this is so good
ahhhh, yes!
This is amazing and I dont understand why there isn't more views.
Wow amazing
Love the song and video! It's been a while. It's great to see those people on screen. Thank you Thảo!
New fave xx
All of us American and Vietnamese are still dealing with what we did to Vietnam.
I’ve liked Thao for quite some time. But this song my god this song this might be her defining moment to this point. Just a breathtaking masterpiece of a song. Cannot wait to hear the entire album. Only 3 & 1/2 months into the year but by FAR jam of the year to this point.
THANKS FOR THIS AMAZING TUNE ❤️❤️
queen i missed you so much
So groovy
Beutiful
Pumped to hear the new album!
This song has been an ear worm for me. I like Thoa putting down the banjo and picking up a guitar... it's kind of CA surf guitar work with an orient twist.
This is the epitome of avant garde, as is much of Thoa's and Stewart's work
Well done
❤
I am a fan of the Cinematography, Guitar, & Vocals. I find it quite funny how indie music videos have such great production quality now, often times it looks better that the garbage, superficial, music videos that VEVO tries to shove down music fans throats.
The cinematography is amazing
That's the difference between those who care more about the art and those who care more about the money.
Asah doo!
💛💛
Thanks!
Nice heat!
i feel like this song would be in a female led fight scene like in birds of prey or something. love it and can’t wait to hear what else you’ve been working on!
everybody do the intergenerational trauma shuffle 🕺💃
2:28 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Guys, that's cool
first one to master the quarantine video wins. Folks, we have a winner...
@Kyle G uhh no real people are dying from it its not a hoax. you need to wake up from conspiracy land.
the way melody and pace of the first verse sounds like Vietnamese speaking tone by an old person :')
Great song lol, I finish here to UN POCO DE TODO, well, for Phenom, but I'm curioso, ._.xD. I'm in love uwu 💕
im gonna shit myself im so excited for this album
Yes Queen. YOU ARE SERVING, I WISH THE VIETNAMESE BACK HOME STOP SLEEPING ON YOU :'(
she sings like postal service
guitar is kinda like khraungbin
Older people are being represented more and more in music videos, I notice.
I think more people are writing about their families and heritage
😎
Puta Album!!!!!!!! Muito bom!!!!!!
