i have thick hair too and what i found that helps more is to use a wand with no clamp, the heat gives better distribution and holds the curl for longer in my experience. If you have extremely thick hair, this is what i always recommend to people!
My advice is: 1. Style your hair after showering it (make sure it is dry completely) 2. Small sections. This is important if your hair is thick 3. Pin them up. After u curl it, roll it and pin them to your hair. Wait for a few minutes until it's cold. Pinning them up also gives volume

maybe try putting hair spray to keep them in place? Hairspray is normally what works for me :’)
