I just came back home (Canada) from my trip to Japan, and I had a shock. The people are soo different, for example at the airport of Tokyo, every employee I saw/met were very polite, joyful, happy and welcomed us in their country with a smile on their faces. At the Toronto airport, everybody was only doing there job, without smiling or necessarily being nice. PLUS I was very suprised by the japanese public toilets, they were so clean compared to the public toilets here! I think japanese people are more respectful when using the bathroom, making sure they don't make a mess you know. Loving your video's
I noticed that japanese are more likely to have naturally shy people because of the extreme politenes, they are more cautious when they talk or approach others and if you mix that with an indecisive overthinker you get a shy person :P Also because of the language barrier they are totally shy towards foreigners , so I vote SHY. Adicionally I want to add that politeness doesn't imply being shy, you can be polite and confident, audacious, courageous, etc
I only meet a Japanese architect, Isao Hosoe (I just found he died 3 years ago). He however lived in Italy since 1967, so he was, indeed polite, but he adapted to Italy, so he didn't bow and didn't say 'Thank you' over and over. He didn't seemed shy to me. He spoke very clearly and was interesting to listen.
1:46 WHAT?! You must be seeing Koreans and can’t tell the difference. A lot of Japanese people always look callow and unhappy. I love when I see someone randomly smiling here because it’s so rare.
It's weird, only Japanese people are labeled as 'shy' 'unhappy' if they are quiet in public places (libraries, hospitals, trains, restaurant, etc). In Japan, people who make noise in those places are considered mentally immature people who grew up without sufficient education. Clubs, izakaya bar, karaoke, festivals, sports stadiums, park, amusement area etc. are not considered public places in Japan.
Actually most of Japanese are not confident about their English that can't comunnicate with foreigners well. that's why many of those think Japanese are shy, which is naturally. We always welcome you!
*DEFINITELY* agree with the 'cleanliness'- not only are Japanese people SUPER polite, but everything is also really clean! Awesome video, keep em' coming! (^^)v
Absolutely, being polite when meeting is the general tendency. It's basic manners, I think it can be said. But the part that most foreigners don't really see after the first few "meetings" or so, is that the politeness and as you said always thinking about what the other person thinks and doing their best to be mannerful to the other individual almost never ends. It's called 建前, which is pretty much being fake for the sake of looking right or proper in the public eye in a sense. Some Japanese people have even admitted to being 建前 (generally not speaking or acting as their true selves: fake) towards foreigners for up to even a year or longer. Just being constantly fake. Anyways, meeting someone and being polite ought to be the social norm, but to ever be putting on a show of politeness at the expense of one's true self for upwards of months to years, depending on how comfortable the individual is, is taking it a bit to far, to an irrational level in my opinion. But again, this is just my "opinion". I'm sure there will be many trolls who would love to negate this one opinion just for the sake of negation. Anyway, year(s) long 建前 is kind of mental I think.
When I went to Japan (Osaka and Hiroshima) about a decade ago, I found that younger kids (teenagers / people roughly my own age and a bit younger, I was in my early 20s at the time) were *not* shy - at all. That might have been partially due to me dressing in a similar fashion as they did, though. Older people, adults and elders, were more reserved towards myself and my parents. In Hiroshima especially I was approached several times by hordes of kids I'm guessing were young teens (they were in school uniform) and they would just start to talk to me in Japanese (which I don't speak - trying to learn), and when I replied in English they would switch over to English too - ...but then they did become a bit more reserved, most likely due to language barriers. I haven't been back since, so I don't know if it has changed significantly over the past 10 or so years.
Every region in Japan has people with different characteristics, many foreigners say that Osaka people are more friendly, easy to get along with foreigners and like to entertain.
japanese are sensitive rather than shy.people in japan HAVE TO behave overly polite bc some people are so sensitive that they cannot forgive other's tiny rudeness. but in drinking situation, they HAVE TO forgive other's rudeness as possible.those are almost de facto law in japan society.that is why drinkinication are shortest way to make japanese friends.especially in japan though other countries might be same.
I suspect that those tourists actuly don't know much about japan at all or just try to avoid the question. Except for that Korean(?) guy that had some viewpoints and i think he meant apolagetic not polite in that situation atleast. I think it's obvious that they are more shy on average than any other place i can think of. Except when it comes to karaoke and onsen. I don't know why though. It's obviously the culture but exactly what factors in feels like a tough question for profesionals. So i'm just guessing but it could be that they have such a low bar to trigger a apology either direction that they aren't used to bother someone or be bothered themselves so they are afraid/shy to do things that make them stick out and be judged by others. Risk of sticking out/being judged could be it.(also not feeling good enough) Most schools, parents and to some degree society taught them to follow guidelines to fit in with everyone their whole life and judge them alooot. Theres a reason Japan has a problem with shut ins that can't handle being part of society anymore. Nothing else that they brought up aren't untrue or anything i might add, just avoiding the question itself since it's brought up as a inheritantly bad thing. Edit: I also notice that the comments keep bringing up language barrier this and that and foreigners, it's not even what being shy are about.. Thats insecurity about your ability to speak a language and i wouldn't call that "shy". They are (on average) shy towards eachother, same language and nationality. Much more reserved and easily embarassed, if you look up the definition of shy i bet it's not that far off. Oh yeah and that they don't speak honestly with people they don't know very well either. It's just how they are and if you don't call those things traits of being shy i don't know what is.
Daju I think some of them do know about it, or think they're more polite than shy. Anyway I think you're quite right. All of them have been raised to be polite and some maybe scared of judgement. Despite that they do help. I've never been to Japan, but I've heard so many stories of Japanese helping tourist (including my mum and my Cousin). But of course there are exceptions as well.
.....It depends on what part of America....Travel agents are in the know about who is who in the USA and will say point blank that people from NEW YORK are rude, in fact the rudest people to deal with.....Whereas people from rural Kentucky will give you the shirt off their back....
Being polite and considering someone else's feelings is a good thing to some degree..... If you are so focused on being polite and not wanting to hurt other people that it obstrucks you from being honest and your true self, then i think it's wrong and could lead to uncomfortable situations.... In almost all situations you can be honest and still be polite...... Some people are get butthurt over everything..... Besides, you can't be friends with everyone! ;)
Funny how alot of people say Japanese are shy, do these people not have Instagram, Japanese girls are half naked a all over the internet, thats not shy to me although they may be very good at playing shy just jump on IG lol
i think i would fit so well in japan xD people in my country speak mindlessly and are often very rude towards things (not much about people, not on their face at least) without needing it. here we don't have boundaries about certain things and if you want to contest or simply discuss a subject you're interested about in detail ~in a polite way, obv~ you are called out as annoying. here we can't have mind stimulating conversating without being considered boring. and, idk, japan just seems different about this ;_; maybe i'm wrong tho
I would say they're politely shy, unless of course some giant monster is rampaging across the city. Then they start running for the lives screaming their heads off like the rest of us.
these people don't know about Tatamae and honmae so they would not have a clear picture about how japanese truly are. unless they have learned something about Japanese culture.
im shy myself, vietnamse descent, hard worker gentle. always liking to make women win. more than man, example: facebook competition most likes. guy had 1 like and women had 0 like so i got my own fc account pressed liked used my mom , message the women i want to win, then she won with 56 likes prizee 250 $ gym clothing merchandise
I think it's just a matter of fact that most Japanese are more reserved, especially in comparison to Americans. Although being polite is definitely a part of it, if I had to say, Americans are just more aggressive with a "get-it-done" attitude. People are also bigger in both directions, and kind of like to take up as much space as they please. If you're smaller, you're going to get run over if you're not careful. We also drive cars more, so watch out for Grandma in a Black Monster-truck at midnight while in the crosswalk (even when it's your turn to cross). This literally happened to me. As a pedestrian in America, you never have the right to cross. Just be aware. Not all people are like this, of course, but I think the Japanese stereotype that Americans are big and loud holds true for the most part.

Japanese are very polite and quiet. This changes over time. They are cheerful and laughing and very helpful.
I love your Channeeeeel!!!

I loved the ending: Cathy was bowing in gratitude and the americans just left lmao.
well the woman did say thank you, and the dude gave a little head nod.

Yo is that a Jojo’s hat? Nice
Funny how alot of people say Japanese are shy, do these people not have Instagram, Japanese girls are half naked a all over the internet, thats not shy to me although they may be very good at playing shy just jump on IG lol
Dont generalize all l
