I have a similar blackface super and Twin to your early 1940s Zenith radio in the start of video to work on. Thanks for the post

Nice looking zenith radio I see in the background. I repaired a couple of those. Had to replace the decomposed rubber wire that Zenith liked to use haha. The first radio was really bad it had three open RF coils I had to carefully rewind. Some critter got in and chewed on those coils. Oh what a love for antiques I just love a good challenge hahahaha. I can't believe it it worked and aligned and actually had pretty good tracking.Of course all the capacitors needed changing and the rubber mounts for the tuning capacitor needed replacing. I heard the 6AX5 rectifier tube was famous for shorting but I thought it's ok because it lasted this long so far so I left it in there but I added a 22ohm seven watt fuse resistor in series with the AC in case it shorts it will open the resistor also it brought the voltage down to 110volts from 120. I think those old radios were designed for 110volts or at least it will run cooler. While it was in the repair shop I played it eight hours everyday for two weeks I think it'll be okay

    Hey Terry,
I just watched this video on a DLP projector filling an entire wall, 7 feet across. Sound coming through my Heathkit W-5M mono blocks, Gold Lion KT-66 outputs, running Altec Valencia 846a horn speakers. Your audio sounds so good that Fender amp was giving me goose pimples! I bet my neighbors thought someone was playing guitar at my house.
I miss the days getting together with friends and the garage band jam get togethers, tipping back a few cold ones. Hearing off the cuff, on the fly real music like this made my day. Thanks man...

Very nice. A true legend of an amp from a time when working musicians needed something in a combo to fill small halls and neighborhood garage band kids actually wanted to be as loud as possible.

I gave my 65 Super (all original and working) to my Daughter, just to heavy to lug around & took up too much closet space- Now I play thru a tweed Pignose, more than enough for this Ol Man.. Love your video's, now I'm in the mood to make an amp from a old 1947 Silvertone Radio, we'll see how that goes.

I cant believe my band mates and me used to lug around a Fender Quad reverb with 4×12" speakers, it was great cos we could plug bass, guitar, vox all in to one box and it sounded amazing for bar and gigs and rehearsals. When I had it all to myself for just guitar it sounded epic! I ended up passing on to a Bazouki player and it went to Greece, I got a twin to replace it. Once you get used to Fender amps its difficult to use anything else cos all you hear is that zingy reverb tone in your brain that you know so well.

Best value Fender amp out there right now. You can find these 70’s era amps for less than a used reissue these days. They have the exact same spec and manufacture transformers as the more valuable mid 60’s amps. The CTS Alnico 10” speakers in these amps are fantastic too. All these amps need is some fairly inexpensive maintenance and a few simple mods.

Just a bit jealous Bill! I owned a Super back in the day. It was an early silverface I acquired used (thanks Dad!) ca. 1974. When I was 13.
Wish I still had it around to do some repairs & mods, sold when things got tough around 1996. For a modest sum.
Its a good kinda pain, loved this amp so much.
Don't even think about getting your baby to distort without a pedal, this was cleaner than clean up past 8.
With single-coils. Hearing a bit of hair on the Normal here, maybe that's your pickups or the blackface mod.
    Liking both. Thanks D-Lab!

When I see Orange Drops I know a technician does not care about true sound quality. How many have I had to replace when a customer brings in his amp and tells me He had someone else work on it and replace caps and now it just doesn't sound good. Usually that the highs are too spikey. Glad to see you left the Blue Drops in, they are not bad sounding like the Chocolate Drops.
Fender partnered with Jupiter to make their new "Ajax" replacement caps and they are wonderful but a little pricey, it is what I use now but nothing compares to the Old Blue "Ajax" caps.
And remember that when a fender chassis gets pulled from the cabinet (or re-inserted) , this is when the faceplate can get damaged if your not extremely careful !!!

I have pretty much this same amp, from 1969. They are getting pretty pricey on the used market. I did a recap job earlier this year, and also changed out the doghouse and bias resistors to metal oxide, even though the carbon composites were still in spec for the most part. The CTS AlNiCo' 10 inch speakers are great, and loud!

Hi Michael, I have a question and hope you can help with your knowledge. I have a Fender super reverb amp, with four 10's Jensen speakers, silver face. I believe it's a 1968 amp . I've been told its 1970
yet another said Nope, 1972 ! My problem is when I look for these amps, the name stamp , top far right on mine in blue reads ,
SUPER REVERB exactly as you see here. Every other one I see reads
super with reverb under it or super
on an angle w/ reverb next to it.
Also the word amp on some.
I'd appreciate your assistance, I've tried so many look ups, model numbers, etc. Thanks, Guy

Greetings Terry! Was wondering if you would consider making a video on the hows and whys of current shunts. Just finishing up a Deluxe Reverb kit (first build, first kick at anything to do with electronics) and thought it might be helpful as I fire it up for the initial tests. I’ve heard you talk about them a number of times in relation to making biasing much easier but I’m not exactly sure which resistors to install where or exactly how to use thrm once installed.
    Thanks for considering.
    Cheers!
    Mark

I had my 1975 Super modified in 1995 to include the Marshall JMP circuit on the "unused" left channel:
The amp has a single input and a foot switch to change the amp back and forth from Fender to Marshall. A noiseless relay was added for this.
The original right input on the left channel holds the Volume 1 and the original left channel volume serves as Volume 2.
The original right channel inputs hold the Marshall gain pot and the other is plugged.
The Fender vibrato circuit was removed and the original intensity knob is used as the Marshall presence.
The left channel bright was changed to work as a "boost" jumper.
After years of working perfectly, it recently blew a fuse. It's time to troubleshoot. I have no schematic or layout so it's going to be a challenge. 🤔

Super clean, i could see how its a great pedal platform. I just didnt get anything from it, not like the first time i played an AC15 i connected with that. But whats 5 min? Tubes aint hardly warmed up.

Don't diss those Peavey-labeled 6L6 tubes. Those are ruggedized Sylvanias (STR415) and are fine bottles. Plus, when found together I have found they tend to be current matched much better than any two random RCA or GE tubes you might have bought in 1986.

Terry, do you prefer the orange drops over the yellow Mallory’s? I picked up a chopped up early 70s bassman 10, all the big caps leaked and under side was untouched, I changed all caps except the blue uglies, I want to change those too and by the sound of this I’ll go with orange drops.
