Sunset Star's and Champagne Train on the Nevada Northern Railway

- Come ride the Star Train on the Nevada Northern Railway. SD-9 locomotive 204 takes us up the old "high line" to the mill site at Mc Gill as the shadows fall and the stars come out.
Track for the Nevada Northern Railway was laid over a century ago, connecting one of the largest copper mines in North America to the Transcontinental routes to the North. Today, several of the original coal-fired standard-gauge steam locomotives that were ordered and delivered new to the railroad over a century ago are still in operation! The Nevada Northern Railway is the best-preserved example of a standard-gauge short-line left in North America.
From their web site:
For those of you who aren't fortunate enough to live up here in the Rural Inter-Mountain West, you are missing our breathtakingly beautiful sunsets and night skies. For those of you who live in these parts, you may not have taken the time lately to stop and gaze at the Heavens. Either way, plan a special evening out admiring the sunset as it sinks over the Steptoe Valley, and witness the stars of ours. This area has one of the darkest skies in the lower 48 states which provides the setting for our wonderful night skies.
Experience a marvelous western sunset and watch the stars come out, while enjoying a relaxing train ride in Nevada's high desert country. The train takes you out into the desert, above Steptoe Valley, giving you a wonderful panoramic view of the sunset. On the return trip, enjoy looking up at the stars, as they come out in the heavens above. Weather permitting, you should be able to clearly see the heavens with your naked eye. Bring your smartphone to help orient you to the night sky.
During the trip, enjoy a sparkly glass of champagne, included with your ticket fare. Please note, we do not bring telescopes on this train. This is a celestial tour of the constellations while enjoying the night skies.
Nice trip, thanks for sharing
SO BEAUTIFUL AND GORGEOUS LANDSCAPE THANK YOU BOTH FOR YOUR VIDEO AND YOUR TIME BE SAFE AND CAREFUL ENJOY THE TRAIN AND TIME AWESOME THANK YOU AGAIN FOR YOUR VIDEO AND TIME JIM KAMMERER OF PHILADELPHIA PA 👍😷😷😷😷🙏🚂LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOUR NEXT VIDEO ON YOUR CHANNEL 😁🚂
Thank you beautiful video.
Thank you 🙏 you two are truly a blessing
Sean P Pickering gee thanks!!
That would be great!
Awsome 😊
All the places I been by sea the best is the night sky. No light pollution it’s amazing. From the middle of the Atlantic, The Gulf, or on the Great Lakes it’s a beautiful show!
Michael Arnold at st George it was (and still is) amazing. Still clear dry night sky. So dark you can’t see the ground. But oh the stars!! The ISS and space shuttle’s look like bright beacons in the sky.
Toy Man Television some day I’ll see it. I’ve seen it in the desert heading to Vegas. Someday I’ll get there. Been to the Nevada Southern. I do plan someday heading to Como, ridgeway, golden, and the Georgetown loop and my trip is set in Colorado since there is nothing else to see then hit up the Nevada Northern. Florida has hardly any trains, so need to leave to ride.
That sunset behind the mountains sure looks a lot like ours...
It was great to see. Fun ride.
Like all your videos this one so enjoyable. Your channel is one of the absolute best on RUclips. God Bless you both
Thanks!!!!! Blessings right back! Stay safe out there.
Another great video!
You took some beautiful footage at dusk. Looks like a lot of fun.
Hi and yes it was. Shame we couldn’t capture any of the stores. But in order to do that you need to use a long exposure which is just not possible from a moving train.
I really miss seeing the black night sky dotted by a zillion diamond-like stars! I have lived most of my life where the night sky was like this. So, I have a tendency to take it for granted! In fact, I could actually see the glow all the way from Salt Lake City in the northern sky from my back porch over 100 miles away! The lights from the city make star-gazing rather difficult.
I was amazed by the positive reaction from the other train riders when they observed the stars as seen from between the area of Ely and Mc Gill. I was reminded of my previous residence... Street lights from the tiny towns, and the ability to see the headlights from moving vehicles traveling along the local roads. The velvety black sky bejeweled with more stars than the eye can comprehend. The glow of the Milkyway high in the sky overhead. I couldn't help but feeling a bit "home-sick" and missing my old neighborhood. As I listened to the excited comments from the others, I realized how lucky I have been... and that there are so many people who have never witnessed this before! Exciting!
Going here in a few weeks. Really looking forward to it!
Watson Entertainment Media it’s so great!!! Say hi to Dirt and DJ for us.
Awesome video liked 🚂👍🚄
Brian Rock Railfan hi. Thanks!! I loved this ride. Just relaxing and fun.
I happened to be at the Nevada Northern this weekend. I was told that I would be driving #40 as a rental engineer but when I got there found out they would be running #93. I was told #40 was so short of run time hours that they needed to save her for the big finaly at the beginning of October.
Well 93 doesn’t suck either! 40 is still a 3 foot locomotive, I think it’s many peoples favorite locomotive on any railroad. Had a chance to watch the restoration of 93 up close and personal. It to is an amazing locomotive
@@ToyManTelevision I was disappointed at first but after they moved 93 from the engine house and I heard the strong 'chuffs' blast up her stack I was hooked. It was a privilege to drive 93 and the 2 hour trip was over way to fast.
I wish you had shown the sky but, I understand sometimes it takes a lot of light to capture the sky astrophotography is a tricky art form. What our eyes capture and our brain register is completely different that what a camera catches.Your eyes register light instantly but it takes prolonged exposure to get the images we see of rich star fields. You are right you can't see stars and Milky Way in the city that's why we need area of dark skys were you can see wonderful sights.
Yes I love taking pictures of the night sky. But it’s a little bit tricky and it certainly can’t be done from a moving train! But the view was spectacular
Stinking neat and never boing. How can riding trains be boring? Amazing how much light pollution there is. The real question is did you see Betelgeuse juese
Not the character payed by Michael Keaton.
Where were the stars. I must have missed seeing them.
Cameras couldn’t get them. Dang.
I'd love to take a train to see the nght sky. That would be amazing!
I grew up in NW Colorado on a ranch. I was very fortunate to see the stars growing up. I feel for many people who don't get the chance to see them. Fortunately there are places where people can go to see the night sky, such as your train ride out of Ely, or like at almost any national monument or National park.
Dinosaur National monument.
"The monument that straddles the Utah-Colorado border near U.S. Highway 40 has been designated an International Dark Sky Park, meaning the nighttime overhead views have “an exceptional quality of natural darkness,” according to an announcement by the monument and the International Dark Sky Association."

Robert Emmons sort of like going to a planetarium with real stars all on a train.
@@ToyManTelevision that would definitely be an amazing experience.
Brought back more memories. Trolleyville in Olmstead Twp. Had midnight rides on a trolley and or an 1873 bobber caboose when our kids were young. Sadly they are now out of business. You bring back many pleasant memories, thanks again!
❤❤❤❤ This is Awesome! Thank you both for sharing!!!
Thanks for watching. More next two Sundays.
Dale letting his inner sound guy out for that long shot starting around 5:49 👏🏻 - great video! Never a dull moment with you two. Edit: love the new blue button sound!
As it appears, the dynamic duo was really enjoying this excursion on the Star Train. All the way through the episode, I was waiting to hear the Kidlets' rendition of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, How I wonder what you are. Well, maybe you edited it out. Happy Sunday.
My two favorite things, trains and stars! Really liked your choice of music to go along with the beautiful vistas.
I tried following the tracks on Google Map and they look to stop just before getting to the wye at the mill. They don't look in that great a shape. Lots of abandoned rail beds.
L up you folks are a lot of fun love your videos
Thanks!!! Do check the next two videos on the trains at the Nevada Northern
I been on all their steam engines.
Soon the 81 will join the roster.
Great video as always. Hate I wasn't volunteering when y'all rode. Would've been nice to meet you.
Looks like you guys rode the Sunset Stars Champagne Train. If you ride the Night Star Train, park rangers from Great Basin National Park are onboard and really have a lot to tell when you get off the train at the star flats.
Yes our train stopped at the far end but no one really got off. The locomotive did a run around and then pushed us further up the line and then we sat there for about a half hour watching the stars. One of the Train crew explained what we were saying but there were no Rangers on board.
.
Sorry, had to. Love the channel!
I love Dirt the cat.
Beautiful sunset ride!
Robert Emmons have you seen DJ? (Dirt Jr). Feisty little fellow. Also filthy. But just as cute.
Wow! I was in great need of some meditative time . . . that was great! The ambient music really added to the train motion and sounds 🥱
It’s a really beautiful ride. I’ve been up Robinson Canyon many times on the Nevada Northern this was only the second time I’ve been up the line to McGill.
Another wonderful, wholesome video. Thank you you guy's. May you both continue to have such pleasant adventure's. God bless.
Joshua Brown thanks!!! You too. Stay safe and happy.
The Nevada Desert Sky is breathtaking. I wanted to go this year on the Star Ride but it was already sold out. You almost have to get tickets a year in advance for this but well worth the trip and price.
If you ride the open your car between the guide showing you the various stores and talking about them it’s essentially like going to a planetarium but with real night sky, all seen from a train. No bats awesome
Hay t b are y’all going to build a 1.8 scale 7.8 inch gage engine
What a great video toyman!!!! Love to see sd9s kicking around
It’s a shame it’s still doesn’t have it’s S P lights
@@ToyManTelevision Agreed... wouldn't you love to see old school EMDs and geeps pulling frights and f/e units pulling passengers... would be great to see them mixed with modern equipment!!!
@@ToyManTelevision also did you hear the rock island made a revival!!! There back in business... next I hope to see SP!!! Also wish freight railroads would own there own passenger trains again
that would be a great train ride. the night shots were a little hard to see on the screen, but I bet it would of been an amazing sight for sure.
look forward to next week's show.
sparky107107 yup. Camera saw nothing. But oh the stars!
As a kid when I was in northeastern Missouri way out in the sticks the only street light was 2 miles away in town and there's one single street light at the Town square which didn't Mount to just a gazebo in the middle of town square. We would lay out in the pasture and see who could count the most s stars... That was some 50+ years ago.... But then my dad brought us to Southeastern Wisconsin and it ended that except for the one week we got to go back down home a year to see my grandparents and my cousins and Uncle but I sure did enjoy looking a little stars every time I got down there...
now I'm home sick and there ain't no home down there no more from what I understand there ain't even a town no more because the kids there's 104 people last I heard there was 30 some people there... We were in the sticks we were good old Missouri hicks... LOL 😂🤣😆
I sure wish your camera would have picked up those Stars I would love to see them...
Will you kids keep having fun and be blessed in Jesus name... BBE 🤗🤗
Hi. Fun story thank you. Yeah the stars were out but we couldn’t film them. It’s fairly easy to take pictures of stars at night but not from a moving train. It requires a tripod and a long exposure neither one of which are going to work on a train.
Great video! Thank you!
very nice
Thanks. Back on Sunday for a ride on 40
Wouldn't do me any good. I live in a rural area and on clear nights I'll always hear stuff like "Wow, look at all the stars!" and with my terrible night vision IF I strain I might be able to see 3 or 4 stars, lol. People ask me, "Well, how do you drive at night then?" I tell them I turn my headlights on.
Sadly Karyn and I both have cataracts in the night sky is kind of a blur. But we’re going to get that straightened out
I almost moved there, the train would have been fun to work on as a volunteer! But NC won!
Trains & Things it’s an amazing place! The 3 hour drive to anywhere is a bit of a problem. But the best standard gauge short line in America
I remember you mentioned the locomotive being completed in 2022? Is that still happening or is it now 2024
On schedule
For a moment there I thought I was seeing the back drop at Gragemahal!
Aren't you lucky. In my part of the world all the tourist railways have been closed since late March and as yet no reopening date. So even if I wanted to take a ride I can't.
Enjoyed your ride though.
You know I was thinking to how much those mountains look like the ones we painted! Really seriously looks like a Gil Bennett painting
When I was in Afghanistan back in 02, the night sky was incredible, the Ort Cloud was very visible and amazing that one could see it just with the naked eye without help from a telescope. But today one barely gets to see about a couple of stars with all of the light pollution from the city lights.
The stars are especially bright in the desert. Well anything really dark place provides great viewing of stars, the dry air in the desert makes the stars extra sharp and crystal clear
Great video, but the Nevada Northern Railway operates two night time trains the Great Basin Star Train and the Sunset, Stars and Champagne Train. This video was on the Sunset, Stars and Champagne Train, not the Star Train. On the Star Train the Dark Rangers from Great Basin National Park are on board the train. Both trains are a lot of fun and if Mother Nature cooperates, there are plenty of stars to see.
Hi mark!! Didn’t know. Thanks fir the information. It was amazing to be part of. Planning on coming back for the haunted ghost train!!!
I been there already it was so fun.
the heavens above us should make us all feel really insignificant another great video I've seen those beautiful Skies in eastern Oregon aw inspiring thank you for another great messing around video :-)
When I was living in St. George it was just a great experience to lay on the patio staring into the Night Sky for hours. It leaves you with a true sense of awe. Sense of our own significance and insignificance brought together.
Good PC&F box car former (Cotton Belt) at 9:49 of the video. Common site with Southern Pacific in the 70's and 80's
Thomas Harroun spotted that. that’s new out there. The main line is sort of back in operation. But crossings still out. So how any why is it there? Hum.....
I truly love seeing your videos, I'd love to travel around the country mich like you two.
Thanks 😊.
SP bought headlights... the engine was the option!
Ray Wheeler not sure why they did that. “Hay bob, you know at night ya otta take the sunglasses off”. “Why, I can just turn on another light er two”.
Dale and Karryn , love your movies and look forward to every Sunday.
Kevin Holland hi Kevin!!
Toy Man Television Hi; you two do a great job! Still recovering from the knee.
You should come see the night sky where I am. The best clearest viewing of all things Galatical
There’s nothing like clear dry air and utter darkness
@@ToyManTelevision hey Dale. Interesting thing happened. The video where I have you and Karin in the photo together, they have unblocked the music on it. Happy days. Hope you're both doing well. Adrian
Another awesome video
how do you and Karen find these trips
Trips in western n y Re so few to come by
There are some truly great train rides. Nevada Northern is certainly one of the best. We haven’t taken too many of the rides in the east. But the Cas is on our list! Nowhere near New York of course but well least of us!
You can see a Dark Sky and all of the stars that it offers by going to Dark Site Finder, clicking on the Light Pollution Map, and selecting a location on the map near you that is at least dark blue if not grey. You'll want to go to that location on a night when there are no clouds, or very few, and when there's a new moon, when the moon is dark. But if you go to the Nevada Northern Railway Museum you'll get see some old trains, take a train ride, and see all of the stars in the sky.
Where I lived in St. George we had the most spectacular night sky I’ve ever seen. First of all there is no light deep in the desert, but also the fact that the air is crystal clear and bone dry adds to the effect. The stars are like tiny jewels in the Milky Way is like an effervescent glowing cloud. With the space shuttle or the international space station would fly over it was so bright it was almost blinding.
@@ToyManTelevision The backroads of Utah and Nevada have the best dark sky locations for the reasons you mentioned, you can drive forever with no lights and almost no clouds.
3:03 very picturesque with the solitary steam locomotive chugging along in front of the desert sunset
That is a great ride
mat tomon relaxing and informative and just plain nice.
I sure wish I could travel like you two, but since I can, your videos are the next best thing! I really enjoyed seeing that SD9E. Thems my favorite
I wish you could too. But thanks again fir watching. Stay well.
Love the Nevada Northern. Love this tour and ride. Will have to do this sometime.
Hi! And do if you get the chance.
If mask is yes then train ride is no.
I would wear a ski mask on a hot summer night used to have a chance at that train ride:-)
Just to have a chance at that train ride
Yeah, theres alot deadly things in the high desert haha. Everyone is a surgeon. Haha.
