I've heard them call it the Ghost Train for so long, but having never been down there, I wasn't aware how Absolutely haunting that whistle is, it's got one of the most unique tones out of all the whistles I've heard
Hi Dale and Karyn. Apparently I'll have the honor of being the last "Be the Engineer" participant before #40 goes in for it's inspection/refit. I'll be the guest engineer on Friday, Oct. 16 then attending the passing of the torch ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 17 (All 3 locomotives to be fired up that day). If you happen to be there I'd love to meet you in person and thank you for your positive contributions to our society through your wonderful video documentation of the high art of screwing around.
Thomas Tomasello we will be there! But may need to lay low. Had a COVID test today. No not because I have any symptoms. But we are having eye surgery. Both of us. And need to isolate while that is going on. And the steam up is right in the middle of that. So we are coming but will need to stay away from people. Wave if you see us!!
It’s so nice to get that notification of a new Toy Man Television video to enjoy with my Sunday morning coffee on the porch. Thanks for taking me to Nevada today!
My brother and I grew up on Long Island NY during the 1950s and loved walking the tracks during the day while placing our ears to the rails to see if a train was coming. At night I remember so well being in bed at about 11:00 a.m. and hearing the sound of steam whistles which put me to sleep. In my opinion, steam locomotives are alive and I cannot care who says otherwise. LIRR engineers each had a different sound produced by the whistle. I loved this video, Toy Man and your bride.
Toy Man Television Was looking at the Georgetown Loop website today. They say to wear a coat because they are running open cars. If it has snow yet there it soon will. Such a neat place. When we were there the last time saw what happens when a mule deer and a BMW run into each other. Not pretty.
I really enjoyed watching this video. Talk is cheap, so I do hope they’ll bring back #40 in 2 years. I love steam engines and always wanted to visit Ely, NV. I’m a long way from Ely and on limited budget being retired. Thank you for taking me there. 🤔🙂🛤🚂
Tourist railroads are one of my favorite types of railroads, that's why I made mine a tourist railroad, that and I like running steam trains as well as diesels, and for my birthday this year, I got an SD70Ace locomotive, because I set my railroad in the modern day
On my last trip out West, I spent the night in Ely. I saw signs (billboards) for "The Ghost Train," but I kept driving because I thought it was a tourist deal like Ghost Town. I really blew it!
There right this minute. All 3 locomotives hot. 81 not running but tender on, injectors working, and best of all, they blew the whistle for the first time in 63 years!
Steam engines are a thing of beauty. Thank you for sharing with us. Now with number 40 out of commission for a little bit you guys will have time to find other steam trains to ride.
One unique thing is the wye, as it is all "automated" with spring switches. There is no manual switching at the Robinson wye. And it was a thrill for me to get to engineer #40 for an couple of hours, over three years ago.

Thanks again for sharing Toy Man TV. That's a lot of new info on the Nevada Northern for me. It's nice that so much of the tracks have been left in place along the unused stretches of line. I'd like to see NN acquire a classic 4-4-0....maybe the "Reno", as it might be available....wouldn't be that far from it's home rails......
Well time for the 1472 day inspection for Nevada Northern Locomotive 40 as required by 49 CFR § 230.17. Unlike a diesel locomotive a steam locomotive that is not properly maintained has a very bad habit of going Boom! Depending how often the locomotive is used every day of operation must be counted. If the locomotive has not reached 1472 days in Fifteen years from the date of the last 1472 inspection then the 1472 inspection must be done. This was done on both the Union Pacific 844 and 4014 locomotives. As much as I would love to see Nevada Northern 40 to run I sure do not want the to see the locomotive boiler explode. Thank you again for the very well edited and produced videos you do each and every week.
Redondo Rita When they took this locomotive over in the 1980s there was no requirement and they just ran it as they found it. Sort of a dangerous thing to do! But it seem to be in fine shape and in fact it was but it had been rebuilt since about 1939. And they went ahead and ran it anyway. But it had been properly stored and as a matter of fact when they did do the teardown 15 years ago it was just fine. But kind of a scary thing to do
Loved this episode! I liked how you two had split up to give us both perspectives on the video shots. Did you two trade off at the wye? Looking forward to the ghost train ride in a couple weeks.
I have always preferred the smaller wheel arrangement locomotives, but my absolute favorite is the 4-6-0 ten wheeler. It just seems to me to have the perfect proportions. being from the uk I find it fasinateing that your boilers are overhauled every 15 years. in the uk its 10 years and being a volunteer at a railway over here I know how worn out locos get in that time. I wonder what state your locos are in at the end of the 15 years although it'd be loverly to have locos last longer in traffic we didn't get to say good bye to one of our locos before the boiler expired because it went during lock down which was sad as it was moved away to another line by the owners. great video though its nice to see how other countries do things
Hi and thank you for the incredibly wonderful comment. And I know that’s redundant but in this particular case it’s necessary. A few years ago there were no requirements. They were finally able to push through a 15 year requirement. You’re right it should be a 10 year rebuild. Our good friend Dan Markoff got caught up in this, he has his own locomotive and as he likes to take it to class a railroads and runs it. And he too is required to do a 15 year rebuild. So he was really upset because he only runs his locomotive perhaps 10 days out of any given year. But that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have water in it. At any rate he tried to get a pass on the 15 year inspection and was not able to get that so he tore into the boiler and rebuilt it. And at that point he became a convert! The situation inside the boiler was dire. Had he not rebuilt when he did there could’ve been a significant problem. I understand that most of these locomotives are only fired up a few days out of the year however some of them run every single day. But Dan’s experience proves that it doesn’t really matter. Every locomotive should be rebuilt probably every 10 years.
@@ToyManTelevision yeah I can't imagine running a loco for more than 10 years without an overhaul. And if anything the running every week end rather than every day like they used to take more of a toll on the boiler with constant heating up and cooling down and is an engine just is sitting with water in the boiler that too wont be very good for the engine I know that back in the day on our lines we used to have fireliters cirling around the shed at nights keeping all the fires going over night to help keep the engines warm it was only when the needed maintenance or a washout that they would be put fully out. I know that when we had an engine failure and one of our engines was out every summer weekend and wednesday that it was beginning to get very worn out. Thanks for the reply
Are there any models of No. 40 out there? Also could it be possible for the train to still go to the mine and be safe? I also recall you doing a video on the tracks between the railroad and the main line. Could that be resereated for the musam as well?
Only in brass. The large driver Baldwin ten wheeler with this valve gear is unique. But the Baldwin ten wheeler is super common. Both standard and narrow gauge. Even the Bachmann g scale ten wheeler is a Baldwin. But it’s a narrow gauge with smaller drivers and in most cases no clave gear modeled. (But the good ones have a similar valve gear). Anyway you can find lots of Baldwin 10 wheelers but if you want this exact one it’s brass only.
When in doubt keep chugging 😁and as I have said before it’s a good thing that they have people and money available for the project and in a national emergency that they have some of them available for at least a limited service considering the black out and other emergencies
@@MT-ni1id.... No, it does not take "2 to 3 years to do it". It's going to be "down" for 2 years to address a number of other "issues" on the 40 as well as its tender.... it's basically going to get a complete refurbishing over the next two years.
T&P.... No, the FRA mandates a complete boiler and flue inspection every 15 years, and generally all the flues are replaced at that time, as well as the boiler casing itself is thickness tested from the firebox to the smoke box and top to bottom. All rivets & stay-bolts are inspected and replaced as necessary as well on the boiler & crown sheet.
So sad but not sad she is getting fix up which is great but 15 years to wait for it I’m not sure what to feel but I’m sure they will go by fast one of nickel plate roads steam locomotives had to do this in 2010 so in 2025 it should be done. And one thing is like going to drive me crazy about is most of the Durango’s and silvertons were restored at the same time so these 15 year over halls will happen around the same time which is scary
If I had Bill Gates' or Elon Musk's money, the line to Cobre would be rebuilt to FRA class 5, on the condition that I could ride a special "express" behind Locomotive 40. I read somewhere that when the crew was running behind schedule, Locomotive 40 made some epic speed runs out across that flat desert. I would probably have a modern reproduction made, though, rather than push a 110+ year old piece of history to its limits.
Well, now I feel bad, I thought I recognised you but didn’t want to feel like an idiot and ask “are you Toy Man Television?” But I definitely saw you that weekend!
One can assume that if there’s artificial intelligence there must be artificial stupidity. So while the computers battle it out let’s play with trains.
Really? The rose garden event a week ago was outside and resulted in 14 infections including the president and 3 senators. AND it’s the law in Nevada. They will shut down the train if they don’t enforce the rule. And it’s really simple.
Super easy to do, costs you and everyone else nothing. All of our responses to the pandemic are risk management (for ourselves and others). What makes NO sense is shaming anyone else for managing their risk carefully.
The last run will be on the 18th. And we will be there. 40,93 and 81 will be fired.

Very cool! Do you know the exact day 40s going out of service. Also ironically my friend just sold his Jeep in Ogden to a man that lives in ely.
I hope 40 is up and running again soon
Memorial day 2022 is the schedule! And I’ll bet they make it
Small part: It looks like trucks are PRR Kiesel tender trucks. Wonder where/when they got it.
I really like watching the Walschart's Valve gear, so much "monkey Motion" going on.
When in doubt keep chugging 😁and as I have said before it’s a good thing that they have people and money available for the project and in a national emergency that they have some of them available for at least a limited service considering the black out and other emergencies
Good old analog technology mechanical
Any footage of the abandoned sections?
Yup. Not yet in the far north. But we will get up there at some point.

Did you have somebody following you in a car? Too bad it's such a short ride. But fun for the short ride anyway.
Brad Taylor nope. We rode one day and chased the train the next.
@@ToyManTelevision Clever.
Is it seriously a 15 year rebuild? In the steam days it didnt take that long
No, they have to rebuild it every 15 years. It take them 2 to 3 years to do it.
At least 81 will fill in for 40!
Brian Falzon and soon they will have all three running.
Toy Man Television exactly
All the water and coal is gone too. They would need 3 section houses with water towers and one coal.
Well, now I feel bad, I thought I recognised you but didn’t want to feel like an idiot and ask “are you Toy Man Television?” But I definitely saw you that weekend!
I can see ai taking this industry on for a final revolution
One can assume that if there’s artificial intelligence there must be artificial stupidity. So while the computers battle it out let’s play with trains.
rotary oy is the only one running om is retired
Wearing a mask in an open space, where the air is the cleanest thing around except for the smoke from the steam engine.
Wearing the mask outdoors makes no sense at all!
health.clevelandclinic.org/should-i-wear-a-mask-outside/
