Sabaton - The Last Stand (Lyrics English & Deutsch)

- On 6 May 1527 a leaderless mercenary army, consisting of German Landsknechts as well as Spanish and Italian mercenaries, invaded the city of Rome. No sooner had the Janiculum fallen into the hands of the looters they began advancing on the Vatican Hill. On St. Peter's Square 147 (of 189) men of the Swiss Guard stood in position to protect Pope Clement VII. In the meantime the remaining 42 Swiss escorted the Pope to the Castel Sant'Angelo (using a secret escape passageway, the Passetto di Borgo) where he finally had to capitulate after a month of siege. None of the 147 Swiss survived. Even today the Swiss Guards have their swearing-in ceremony of new recruits on 6 May, in tribute of the fallen.
CAUTION!
I won't tolerate any racist, discriminatory or in any other form inappropriate comments! This song neither glorifies war, nor National Socialism, but should be considered as a historical work.
"No, we don't glorify anything, we just tell stories about things that have happened." (Rikard Sundén, founding member of Sabaton)

----------

@SMAK oh I thought we were breaking ideals down to their most basic of forms.
@SMAK well I don't actually know but I don't claim to. The world having no intelligent design is unlikely but not less or more unlikely than someone creating every part of existence in 7 days. I believe a little bit more highly that the universe evolved to its current state over adapting through millions of years than a being was magically just here and created it in 7 days and somehow knows everything you're ever going to do but yet somehow still makes you ask for forgiveness when it was "fate" for you to do it.
To those of you who wonder what the song is about....

DEUS VULT INFIDEL!
Swiss Mercenaries were sought after as bodyguard units in Europe by Kings and Emperors as they had a reputation for professionalism and political neutrality, both of which were valuable assets in the often volatile nature of European politics.
In addition to the Vatican, another famous Swiss Guard unit was one that was hired to guard the Bourbon monarchs of France. The bloody battle between the Swiss Guardsmen and rioting Paris mobs at the Tuileries Palace during the Insurrection of August 10, 1792 was their most famous engagement. The Guardsmen gave back as good as they got from the rampaging crowds, but they were overwhelmed and slaughtered. The survivors were later beheaded.
After the Bourbons returned to the French throne in the 1800s, they erected a statue dedicated to the memory of that guard unit, dubbed "The Lion of Lucerne".
When everyone thinks this is about the crusades when in reality it’s about the Sack of Rome in 1527, and the efforts of the Swiss Guard

Agree
It’s simple math
Razvi sigue vivo, impresionante
The German translation of the lyric "Gave their lives on the steps to Heaven" means "Gave their lives on the way into the heavenly kingdom," but the lyric actually refers to how the remnants of the Swiss Guards who weren't killed in the initial stand at the Vatican's Teutonic cemetery retreated to the basilica and died literally on the "551 Steps to Heaven" which is a colloquially term for the steps of St. Peter's Basilica.
ISIS: WHY DO I STILL HEAR BOSS MUSIC?
XD
It ain't me it ain't me I ain't no millionaire son
It’s something most folks don’t realize, ‘till they’ve watched it, y’see. They’ll scoff and say ‘a prayer won’t stop a blade’. Sure, they all have their little superstitions or faiths. There isn’t a soldier alive that doesn’t have a lucky charm or godly symbol somewhere on his uniform. But do most of them think it’ll save their ass, standing against the enemy? Nay.
They haven’t seen it though. There’s a chill to it. 147 men against thousands; a bunch of guards holdin’ off a small army. You march forward, cocky as you can be, cause you know this ain’t gonna be a real fight. The you see them. They’re just standin’ there, at the ready, darin’ you to come forward. But there isn’t a shake among them, no. You look out, and you see their eyes, and they ain’t the eyes of a soldier. They ain’t wary, or afraid, or eager for battle. They’re the eyes of a father protecting his children, of a husband saving his wife. They’re dead men on their feet, and they know it… but they have faith. Faith is a scary thing when you’re facing it down, lad. A good soldier can hold the line against any bugger you throw at him… But a man with nothing but faith in his heart, pressed up against a wall? He’ll stop hell itself.
Cause’ they don’t feel fear. They don’t feel pain, They don’t scream or retreat or break down. They don’t get tired, and when they die, they die lookin’ at you with those same, fearless eyes.
When religion is added to a war/conflict, it automatically becomes 10x bloodier. Why? Because they all have faith, which gives determination.
I don't want to blanderize your thought by quoting a fictional example but you've just described warhammer 40k plot.
Faith in the face of horror.
Basically 40k's Imperial Guard

In the start of the battle the Swiss Guard took out the commanding officer of the horde who didn't want to attack the city.
The 189 took out 900 of the enemy and succeeded in why they were created, to keep the pope safe!

This song made me researched the Swiss Guards and who they actually were. They were the elite bodyguards of Pope Clement in the early 1500’s. In 1527, as he sing suggests, they were deployed to hold off the invading Spanish and Lutheran German troops that were invading Rome, and to buy time to allow Pope Clement to escape. They were massacred by the sheer size of the invading force, including their Captain, Röist, who was slain in view of his own wife. Those who lived retreated to defend the Pope’s entourage. In the end, Rome went under siege by the Spanish, and only 40 Swiss Guards survives to “tell the story again”. God bless.
God bless the 189 Swiss Guards.

Pope: Is in danger
Swiss: **FOR THE GRACE, FOR THE MIGHT OF OUR LORD**
World war 2 vs. 500 swiss guard and the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch.
Im from Switzerland and i agree
I don't understand why people comment about the crusaders when this is about the last stand of the Swiss Guard during the sacking of Rome in 1527.
Because it sounds like it could be about the crusades if ya don't pay attention to all of the lyrics.
@@natekent3910 Yeah, it could be about the Crusaders, but I listen to all of the lyrics.
We will take Jerusalem deus vult ✝️
There's videos where this song is put over clips from films about the crusades
@@williamjessop342 Is there movies about the Crusaders? If so, can you tell me? I'm a history buff and I like watching movies about history.
To all those who think this song is about the crusades i have two things to say. One, read the description our dear friend Piscator has so thoughtfully put up telling you what this song is all about. Two, actually listen to the lyrics and realize this is a song about the sacking of Rome in 1527 and the last stand of the Swiss guard!
Shhhhhhh DEUS VULT HERETIC
Silencer 776 Deus Vult
I gotta say that god wills you to show respect to the Holy See’s protectors
DEUS VULT INFIDEL!!!
Stop ruining the meme stupid normie
That's what happens when a Swiss person gives up neutrality. It takes a whole army to defeat one.
Makes sense. If they don't want to fight it is usually for a good reason. Especially if that reason is that they can beat you with their eyes closed.
Unless you're Texan

The best kind of music is one that tells a story. History is so important and membering the brave men that gave their lives to protect others. Something some people don't care about nowadays.
The same idiots who sacked Constantinople?
@@friedlemons5201 yes the same idiots they still did what many dont do and also Muslims did the most damage to tht city not Swiss guards didn't even do that s*** they just protect the Pope and other things but not seize a whole f****** City that is why there's armies
@@jonaswieman7685 I guess it was the video. I looked up the lyrics and I found out it was actually about swiss guards

Still waiting for Sabaton to make a song about the Fall of Constantinople
That would trigger too many SJW's.
WE WILL TAKE CONSTANTINOPLE
(Nah, doesn't roll of the tongue that well)
What if it was from the Ottoman perspective? I mean they made a song about the rise of Hitler
My friend: trap is the best music
Me with a shotgun: *holy metal intensifies*
