They should have moved the Palace Casino into the "dying" Phase One, and left *Fantasyland* alone. Thanks for credit... but this is not about me... it is about what has been lost in WEM / Fantasyland since the first major changes in 1995 (and continues to be removed today) - and that is A LOT.
I remember growing up and wanting to go on the solar flare as soon as I was tall enough. When I finally would have been able to go on it, it was gone 😢 Oh and who remembers that one ride with a ton long rows of seats where the ropes course is now?? My sister loved that one!
I was always too afraid to ride it, looked too sketchy. Probably the only ride on planet earth I've ever refused going on. I'll jump out of an airplane but I won't get on the solar flare lmao
I miss Solar Flare sooooo much. That ride was intense. I was upside down at the very top and my car keys fell out of my pocket allllll the way onto the pathway lol. Luckily a kid grabbed them and gave them to the ride operator.
Former Galaxyland ride op here! Another reason they were willing to part ways with the Solar Flare was due to its maintenance and upkeep. The ride was reeaaalllly finicky and spent a fair amount of time not running.
I think the pendulum would still be a very cool ride to see come back, just with better technology and workings of course 😂 I always wanted to ride a boat that went upside down
Really says alot about WEM nowadays, that they are more willing to bleed dry the few people put there with no self control, rather than try to actually appeal to everyone, all in order to make more money.
Fun fact: back in the late 90’s early 2000’s galaxyland used to be home to big party’s known as rock and ride where they used to bring mtv into galaxyland and they hosted a huge dance party once every month, they even had Ricky j have a concert there one time, it was sooo fun
Interesting to look back at the Great Galaxyland Shuffle of 2015. We just visited this year, but our last visit would have been before the shuffle. The park definitely seemed smaller than last visit and now I know why. I'm not sure that everyone would miss the attractions that were removed, but I always loved the fountains and had good memories of them back to the Fantasyland days. And while kiddie cruiser only appeals to a very young audience, I have great memories of taking my son on this when he was just a couple years old. But I guess that's the natural evolution of a theme park and there's always a need to keep things new and interesting!
I disagree with the direction they've been going in which is sort of a more kid-friendly direction. The removal of Solar Flare and Cosmic Spinner (they still have Zero Gravity, but meh) shows that they really aren't trying at all to appeal to the teenager audience. All there really is for those is Swings, Mindbender, Orbiter, Haunted House, Space Shot and Adult Bumper Cars. Gets pretty boring to ride those over and over again. There's lots of wasted space with things like Space Bump (probably the least popular ride IMO), Rock N'Wall (literal definition of cash grab), and Quirks (most boring ride IMO). I get the addition of Ropes Quest as it's actually pretty popular, but Cosmic Spinner was badass and I think a removal of Space Bump + Rock N Wall could make room for a more advanced ride in the future. Probably will never happen though because the Space Bump area is pretty weird, and I'm not sure what ride they could add there at this point. Their own questionable decisions put them in this place to have to remove Solar Flare and Cosmic Spinner
Yeah man but people ALWAYS used to puke on the cosmic spinner. Working that ride was disgusting, at least once a shift it had to be shut down for cleaning. I assume that had an impact on their decision to remove it lol
RIP The Zipper. I think if WEM bought another one that would make things better. The Chance Rides Zipper is a great ride. Take out the ship and put a Zipper in its place
This makes me sad, i never thought about it looking different. Mostly because i dont go there often and when i do, theres too much exactement to notice. Great video!
I rode the Carousel when I was at WEM in 2011 on my honeymoon because I am not a huge fan of Amusement park rides in general and my wife is. She went on some of the coasters, and other more advanced rides while I stuck to the Carousell, the Train, and the Bumper cars... I loved the Bumper cars which was something I hadn't ever done befoere but I had trouble getting on and off of the carousel which amused my wife to no end her having ridden real horses and being 5' 7" to my 6'1" never ridden real horses. Thanks for the great channel We hope to get back to WEM one day but life takes over at present.
after watching several of your " remember when " video's.....I have been reminded that evolution is both good and bad In this case, obviously, the world changed over the last several years and it really has not been kind to W.E.M.
I've never liked Galaxyland all that much but I'd certainly be upset if WEM saw the World Waterpark to be just as disposable. (which, despite the removal of one of my personal favourites the Thunderbolt, has at least managed to make it through to today mostly unscathed.)
I always love the kiddie convor and the motor jump those where my favourite childhood Rides I would always go in the teal car in the kiddie convor :) I will remember that I’ll ask my dad what happen to it because he works at wem ;)
I took my kids here last year and noticed it was objectively worse than how it was when I used to go as a kid, yet the price is creeping up faster than the inflation rate it seems. Sad 😔. Maybe I just miss the Zipper and the Pendulum.
What happened to the spinning ride that was immediately south of the mindbender? It had probably 10 arms with a secondary arm at the end that would spin around with a car at each end. Favorite ride of the 90s there.
The last time I walked through I don’t think I even notice that the fountain was gone and now I’m so sad! I used to love that thing. Hope they bring it back somewhere else!
Fascinating stuff- I hadn't seen this one video before. I definitely recall the old Galleon location, but I didn't remember the more "open" area where Zero Gravity/Trouble is until you mentioned it, haha!
I knew there was a bigger boat ride at galaxyland at one point! I moved out of the city not too long after it's removal, and didn't go back until I was much older. I had thought my memories of the ride were overblown, and that the ride seemed smaller upon return because I was then a teenager and not a little boy, but I guess my memory was right!
Hey bem! I think air race is leaving too! I was at galaxyland yesterday and the arm that held it up was there but the wheel itself was nowhere to be seen
I loved the solar flare and the pendulum, the zero gravity looks cool, I gotta check that out. There was this one ride that flipped you upside down that was pretty sweet that I miss too.
Can you maybe talk more about the rides that stayed for not too long at galaxyland? Also what happened to the sonic twister? I went there awhile back and it’s gone now :( I loved that ride
Sonic Twister was removed in order to put in Ropes Quest and Rock N' Wall. Basically, a money grab since to ride the Rock Wall you have to actually pay with cash and pretty much everybody aside from small kids can go on Ropes Quest.
Actually Sonic Twister had alot of mechanical problems that were getting to be to problematic and had to be removed due to the fact it was always down closer to the end of its reign.
I used to come to this park every weekend for like a couple months during summer break when I was a kid, and I was always too short for the solar flare. I NEVER got to ride it even when I was of age! Like 12? It SUCKS being short for rides, but I imagine it’s like the potato wedges during k days
should put cosmos fountain in the entrance by the dollarama and trouble ride. theres a good amount of open space in the area where you buy wristbands and tickets
Luckily I got to ride this in grade 9, for so long I wanted to ride it but I wasn’t tall enough. I had finally grown from 5’4” to 6’1” that year and rode it 5 times that day and got sick of it. Next time I visited galaxy land it was gone, glad I got to experience it
Ive been to west Edmonton mall and it was cool the pool was expensive and great fun food there was good id like to go back wish i could've seen the lake navy and other missed rides and other stuff i want to see old school burban street
Technically the solar had to be removed not for the Flying Galleon but it used to be where the Sonic Twister was going to go after the ropes course took over the Sonic Twisters Spot.
I remember entering the west Edmonton water park and when you leave the change room and look up you could see cosmo riding a surf board few months/years later he was replaced with a shark any reason why this happened??
Sooo sad to hear this!! Zero gravity is cool but gets boring! The solar flare never got old! The height, thrill, flips, all were an exciting extreme adrenaline!
There was Galaxy Twister at that location at the time but was closed for 6 months due to the fact that ride was junk and removed in 2009 to make way for sonic twister. It was also relocated where the solar flare/perilous Pendulum/flying Galleon was, just to make room for ropes quest
I'm still not over they moved flying gallon and I wanted so badly to go on the solar flare but being young I wasn't tall enough and I waited then it got removed . . . and the fountain I miss so much
Here's a new video idea: What is going to happen to the large space formerly occupying Target? WEM, like many other malls doesn't seem to have any idea of what to make of that area.
Solar flare was gone before fall of 2014 at least from what i know about it it didnt get alot of riders due to the high limit and the amount it was down when i started working there in oct of 2014 it was already moved and ropes quest moved Sonic twister to when the solar flare was shortly after Twister was removed due to it always being broken. and became to much of a hassle to maintain. So the casino expanding had nothing to do with solar flare. it was long gone before that started the year after.
Even if the Solar Flare was still there and even if it was super cool looking, I would NEVER go on it, it looked fucking terrifying, ESPECIALLY SINCE IT WENT IN FULL FUCKING CIRCLES
David Ghermezian who is Eskanders son is President then looking after West Edmonton mall while they start Building the American Dream mall New Jesery , Xanadu
wow! 2011 but removed in 2017 because that ride was junk in that location, technically every ride in that square foot location technically breaks down a lot because it doesn’t have strong support for electrical mechanisms
Cosmic rev was a p.o.s lol. Ive worked here for 4 years and running that ride it always broke down it wasnt very popular and it was very hard to run from a operator perspective. But we did put a really cool new ride there called HAVOC Which was a pain in the first bit of trying to get it up and running but has been great since it opened. Its alot better then Comic rev.
Rip Kiddie Convoy. I worked that ride a lot when i worked there in high school. I also remember riding it at fantasyland as a child. The flying galleon was a death trap, good riddance
They should have moved the Palace Casino into the "dying" Phase One, and left *Fantasyland* alone.

Totally agree!
I agree, if it was possible a move to phase one say to where the Sears was would make sense, lots of parking and 2 floors to occupy.

Yes that is so true
I miss all the slides they used to have. It was a total blast as a kid
I like the old way it was
I miss the old old way it was... back when it was Fantasyland :(
I really don’t like the cosmo stuff, I hope that they completely redesign the aesthetic of the park with the hasbro partnership
I strangely remembered cosmo’s space fountain as a kid. I thought it was cool. I also miss it a bit.
Yeah- it was a nice little whimsical kind of thing.
I remember growing up and wanting to go on the solar flare as soon as I was tall enough. When I finally would have been able to go on it, it was gone 😢 Oh and who remembers that one ride with a ton long rows of seats where the ropes course is now?? My sister loved that one!
Galaxy twister was the name of it :)
Dawn Frank it’s still there!
Dawn Frank ya that was a mistake
Lizzie Buller I thought it was the sonic twister. Anyways it's sadly not there anymore
I was always too afraid to ride it, looked too sketchy. Probably the only ride on planet earth I've ever refused going on. I'll jump out of an airplane but I won't get on the solar flare lmao

Stephen Smith same here but we had the pendulum when I worked there. I remember it being a nightmare for maintenance and safety.
@@vinnievee5710 did you know were the pendulum went to
I think the pendulum would still be a very cool ride to see come back, just with better technology and workings of course 😂 I always wanted to ride a boat that went upside down
haha I'm curious about other ride operator stories! I never knew anyone who worked there for long- just a few shifts before they bailed.

has a casino for reason *cough*

Jesus McCheesus I was scared of that one because it was very loud
What is the cosmic spinner
What about the inclusion of the shitty ropes quest in place of that awesome spinning pendulum ride?
Spectra _ ropes quest is actually badass. You can see everything and say u touched the roof.
Umer Shaikh it does, but some people don't like rollercoasters.
Oh crap I remember that ride know!! I was really young when I went there maybe 9? But I remember that ride and I loved it!
I miss the fountain lol
KING_EDGE I forgot about it 🙁
KING_EDGE remember the bouncing water in the food court?
KING_EDGE it was a big part of my childhood :/

You should totally do a video on the fountains in the food court over by the lake and mini golf course.
Anyone know why they took out the zipper? That ride is the best! I love it!
I've noticed a change as soon as they started changing it....I can't belive that things are still changing after its been 30 years

Do you think galgaxy land will be cut off more in the future if it does that would be sad because i always whent there almost every year in my life
As an Edmontonian who hasn't been to Galaxy Land since around 2013, this video was just a flurry of bad news.
Solar flare scared the shit out of me my first go, I didn't know it came pretty close to the wall at the top. I thought something was wrong 🤣

Damn I wish I went when I was younger, I would of loved to see thr solar flair and the indoor zipper. It's pretty boring in there now

Another awesome video! I tried the zero gravity ride about 2 months ago and it’s great!
What are they doing with the Mind Bender?? I hate that it's leaving :(
You should do the Gourmet Court fountains, the jester masks, or Flamingo Bay/Jungle Hangout next!
Do you mean the arch fountains which used to be in the Phase 3 food court ?
Yes
This was a very sad ending: ruclips.net/video/_CBZa1dRpXM/видео.html

the galaxy twister was broken like every week. out of every rock N ride I went to I think I saw it working maybe 25% of the time
I remember that ride. It was like a mini version of those larger spinning swing rides. Too bad it broke down lots
