  • I’m not sure if you know this, but Cason is Scottish!! He is the commissioner of Clan Gunn GA which means we go to quite a few Highland games / Scottish events ever year.
I asked him to show how to put on a traditional Scottish kilt, called a great kilt. Let us know if you have any questions at all. Or if any of you are Scottish, we would love to know what clan you are!

This is so wonderful to see! Thank you for your tutorial on how a traditional kilt was worn. I'm in New Zealand and was in the process of finding a kilt maker. I am Clan Gunn also and have always loved the look of traditional kilts. You have saved me so much time as now I will be ordering my 9 yards of Beautiful Clan Gunn Tartan. Thanks again for such an informative Video. Cheers 🙂

The whole 9 yards thing is kind of a myth.
It's 8 yards *single width* (30") that is cut and half and re-sewn to make it half and long but wider - *double width.*

    @woltews Год назад +3

The Oxford English Dictionary finds the earliest published non-idiomatic use of "The whole nine yards" or "the full nine yards" is in an 1855 Indiana newspaper article. The earliest known idiomatic use of the phrase is from 1907 in Southern Indiana. The phrase is related to the expression the whole six yards, used around the same time in Kentucky and South Carolina. Both phrases are variations on the whole ball of wax

Another thing to be noted is that the tailored kilts (or pre-pleated, as you say), evolved from the small kilt (feleidh-beag in Gaelic), which was half of the piece of fabric, the long way, of a great kilt. It was also hand pleated, and belted on, just like a great kilt.

I'm descended from Big Henry Gunn, that was killed at the Massacre of Glencoe. My name is Larry Glenn Henderson. Glad i found your RUclips channel, because i've been told that Clan Gunn and Clan Henderson are the exact same heritage.
And i would also like to say thank you to Rachel Gunn, for not giving a crap about getting a medal at the Holy Roman Empire Olympian Coliseum. Because the last time i checked. The Highlanders do NOT care what the Holy Roman Empire thinks about us, they can kiss me arse i think is the sentiment, lol!
So when i see photos of the Henderson Stone in Glencoe....it reminds me, it should ALSO be called the Gunn Stone at Glencoe.
So it was basically James Henderson Gunn, that died on the Battlefield next to King James....because the Gunns and Hendersons have always been the Pipers and Guardians.
After a little bit of digging, to satisfy my curiosity....i found out WHY the Bagpipes are played at the Funeral of Fallen Officers. ( i used to go "are they all Scottish Irish or what??)......now i know why. It is to Remember the Massacre of the Highlanders at Glencoe. They were the Protectors of the people. The Guardians. Especially Clan Gunn and Big Henry Gunn's Sons...later called the Hendersons.
So i have a bond if you will....with Clan Gunn and all the other Jacobite families that wanted King James's grandson called Bonnie Prince Charlie....to reclaim the throne as the King of Scotland....King of England.
In 1745, Prince Charles Edward Stuart (better known as Bonnie Prince Charlie) launched an attempt to reclaim the throne his grandfather, King James VII of Scotland and II of England, lost in 1688.
My like 15th direct Grandpa is James Henderson of Fordell Castle. Who died on the battlefield protecting and fighting next to King James VI
My 10th great grandpa is Colonel Robert Henderson of Tunnygask.
My 9th great grandpa is his son named Thomas Henderson.
My 8th great grandpa is Richard Henderson Sr.
My 7th great grandpa is Edward Henderson
My 6th great grandpa is Charles Henderson
My 5th great grandpa is Daniel Henderson
My 4th great grandpa is Pleasant Henderson
My 3rd great grandpa is James Crawford Henderson ----> buried in the Crow cemetary ----> Love County, Orr Oklahoma.
My great great grandpa is Madison C. Henderson
My grandpa is Robert Kendrick Henderson
And my dad is Larry Wayne Henderson.
I would like to see the Clans re-united to fight against the Holy Roman Empire one day..to be honest.
    Love you guys!

"Slàinte Mhath" Thank you for sharing this. I've always been told of my Scottish and even Irish-Scottish heritage.
Recently through DNA testing (3 tests) and Scottish born cousins with family history proof confirming the DNA findings, I've confirmed my GGG Grandfather Richard Wilson was not only of Scottish Origin but from the direct lineage of the Wilson Sept
      🗡️SEMPER VIGILANS🗡️.
I also have on mom's side Williamson and Robinson very closely. Three mighty Gunn Clans to which I am very proud to share lineage with. I'm as proud of my Viking-Norse Lineage as my African lineage and we give honor to our Scottish and Irish-Scottish clans in home and heritage. My son has just ordered the tartans from Clan Gunn Wilson and Williamson so this video is aces teaching him how to fold them traditionally and wear them properly. I have also ordered the family tartans and I'm actively searching how women wear the Earasaid properly.
I pray the CREATOR watch you and protect you and cover you and your family. "May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face the rains fall soft upon your fields. Until the great ones meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand"

  • @bigwilf1966

Fèileadh Mor is really the true kilt. The Fèileadh bèg is the kilt you see more often today. When looking at sources for highland history you need to remember that before the British Empire embraced highland culture for its military it spent 150 years trying to wipe it out completely. So take any " fact " on that basis. We are missing a lot. I am a Scot living in Scotland and have had to change a lot of the opinions on Scots history recently due to me learning Gaelic. As more sources mean new ideas.

@@laurenslaughter3875 I've just looked at it again and I wondered: does it work for actually creating a pocket or is it an innovation to provide more padding for his sword belt? I wear my great kilt without consideration for swords, bucklers and daggers as I'm not allowed them in the office!

Sláinte mhath! Great demonstration of the breacan an fhéilidh (belted plaid)! Some of your information and nomenclature were a bit off but the demonstration was spot on. That hat is a Scots (or Scotch) bonnet rather than a tam, which is short for tam-o'-shanter and is a different style.

The great kilt or belted plaid is one piece of fabric. Most people today wear the modern kilt (little kilt) which is still one piece of fabric but is pre-sewn with pleats and aprons.

I am a Gunn with Georgia roots. My father was born there, in Warren Co. My favorite weapon though would be a 58 caliber rifled musket. Do the names Simeon Gunn, Richard Gunn, Jesse Gunn, David Gunn, Benjamin Gunn mean anything to you? All served in the Gardner Volunteers, Co. H, 22nd Georgia Infantry, Ambrose Ransom Wright's brigade in the Army of Northern Virginia. There's also a William T. Gunn from Warren Co. in Co. B of the 48th but I haven't been able to establish a relationship. First ancestor in Georgia was a Richard Gunn given a land grant in Georgia for his service as a drummer in Virginia during the Revolutionary War according to the DAR.
