    Glad I came across your channel. I’m land locked now and haven’t salt water fished in years. This video reminded me when my dad and I would go fishing in 78 and 79 around St Luis pass at the bridge on the Surfside side catching specs. Thanks , enjoyed watching. Did subscribe.

    That trout was a beast. I’ve lost several large trout as well in that area. I lost a behemoth just north of that right across the Reynolds plant. Right across the plant in the cove. I no longer have a boat so I’ve decided to get a yak. I can still access some great spots with it. Also allows me to fish out here where I live in Houston. I grew up fishing in Mustang and Port Aransas area. I no longer fish like I used to so I watch your videos to get my fix. Lol. Tight lines Brother.

    Excellent video. I've been fishing popping corks, Cajun Thunder-types and maulers for 40 years and still picked up a good tip or two from ya'. Like the multi-twitch pause multi-twitch pause that works. I need to vary my cadence and include yours. Also, I know your anguish at losing that really large trout, have had it happen too often on their jumps, and I remember those as much if not more than large fish landed. And so often, it seems they'll shadow a cork-twitched lure all the way to the boat and often hitting as I lift it out to make the next cast. It ends up surprising both of us, with them often the winner and me saying what you did.

    What size jig heads do you usually use under popping corks? Some people say that 1/4 oz heads can be too heavy and cause too fast of a drop after a couple of pops and that 1/8 oz or maybe even 1/16 oz are better. They say it effects the action of the soft plastic or at least the drop rate. It may effect the action of certain soft plastics but I don't know if it will matter with gulp shrimp considering their action is nonexistent. Thanks.

    • @redfishross
      @redfishross  6 лет назад

      Bob Gill Hey Bob , yes I agree about the 1/4 oz dropping to fast , I use 1/8 oz for everything. Gulps are not as buoyant as soft plastics so you could probably even use a 1/16 oz with them. In my opinion rate of fall is critical for drawing more strikes. Tight Lines !

    That was a nice trout I used to lose some years ago when I used to fish in the coast and someone told me that when you get close to a boat or the bank always keep your rods facing down and do not let the fish come out of the water if he comes out of the water he will shake his head and get that hook right out and it looks like that's what happened there, good luck keep on fishing...

    I don’t comment much, but I really enjoyed the video. Heading to Edisto SC this summer for some of the same and I’d like another casting rod/reel. Would you recommend the torrent in that price range or would you go with something else? Also, how did the popping cork hold up?

    • @redfishross
      @redfishross  5 лет назад

      Onetime75 Hey thanks , glad you liked the video. I had a corrosion issue with the pinion gear bearing but if you keep it oiled up good it’s a solid reel at that price. The corks are awesome , really durable.

    How are you able to throw a popping cork with a baitcaster?. Two baitcasters i have do nothing but backlash.

    • @redfishross
      @redfishross  5 лет назад

      Chloe millers Fabulous cheeks The most important thing is to have your bait caster tuned right and secondly with a cork you want to make more of a lob cast. If you try and throw it hard you run into problems.

    How in the heck are you able to cast a cork? I tried to hook one on to my baitcaster and my M/H rod and I got nothing but bird's nests. I usually just stick to fishing corks on my spinning reel. Any tips?

    • @redfishross
      @redfishross  6 лет назад

      dlaich1 Because the corks catch a lot of wind you have to use more braking than with a normal lures. It’s just a matter of tuning your bait caster to the size and shape of the cork you’re using.

      Marcos Reyna Hey Marcos , I use fluorocarbon because it's very tuff , but I do check for nicks and if I feel any I change the leader.

    Not sure if this helps you, it helped me. When any fish jumps at the surface, just as they break the water, point your rod down. I was always told to just stick it in the water. Be it trout, bass, tarpon, or ladyfish. Since I learned that trick as a teen I've never lost a fish to a breaching head shake.

    I love your video RedfishRoss. I'm trying to help my son catch his first Redfish. He has caught plenty of trout but has yet to catch a redfish in Hilton Head. What tides do you like to fish. Maybe we will try that soft plastic instead of DOA and Voodu shrimp

    • @redfishross
      @redfishross  7 лет назад

      Greg Young Hey Greg , great to hear you are getting your son into fishing. Our tides here in Texas are so minimal I don’t pay any attention to them. I think your son will have better luck with a paddle tail soft plastic than with the shrimp style bait. Tight Lines !

      Salem Blair Hey Salem , my leader is 20# Fluorocarbon and the length depends on the depth of water I’m fish. If I’m fishing in 4 foot of water I use a 2 foot leader. I always try to hit the mid range of the depth.

    Hey redfishross, im fairly new at using a baitcaster and ive been struggling with throwing a popping cork on my baitcaster for trout. I can cast just about everything with it, except whenever I use a cork, it causes a backlash. can you provide me with any tips to avoid it? I use braid btw, not sure if that makes a difference. Thanks!

    • @redfishross
      @redfishross  6 лет назад

      Daniel A Hey Daniel , Popping Corks and Braid is a tuff combo to cast if you are fairly new to bait casters. Mono or Fluorocarbon makes it easier to handle. Corks catch a lot of air so it’s easier to get back lashes. The trick to casting corks no matter which line you use is to not throw them too hard. A lob type cast will give you plenty of distance and cut way down on over runs.
