I can't believe you have found this Anime I used to watch as a child. I have been trying to find it for ages and you have put my mind at ease finally... so grateful
I don't want to be knit-picky, but I think that since this video is supposed to be about anime specifically from the 1960's, it's relevant for me to point out that your plot description of Astro Boy seems to describe the 1980 series, rather than the 1963 series. Both series do share some plot points; Tobio (or Astor/Toby, if we're going with English dub names) dying in a car crash, Dr. Tenma (Boyton) creating Astro/Atom as a replacement, Astro ending up in a circus, Dr. Ochanomizu (Elefun) taking Astro out of the circus and eventually creating robot family members for him, etc. In the '63 anime, though, Dr. Tenma kept Astro for several years, when he came to the realization that Astro would never grow up; a reminder that Astro was not Tobio. After that, he actually sold Astro into the circus. I'm also pretty sure Kathy wasn't in the '63 anime, either way she wasn't in the circus in that one. Anyway, I don't know if you want to put an annotation with the '63 plot description at that part or not, I just thought I'd point that out in case you didn't notice the little info mix-up. :)
I never knew Mahou Tsukai Sally played in Poland, was it subtitled in Polish? I'm an american but I fell in love with the show recently, but sadly only a small fraction of the total episodes have been subtitled (as is the case with many 60s anime) : (
Himitsu no Akko-chan -- 7:57 ,Cyborg 009 -- 9:46 and sally the witch 7:30-7:57 are my favorite from here! Wish "Cyborg 009" Would be released on DVD Blue Ray
I know 4th is very high but I would’ve put Speed Racer just behind Astro Boy. He’s a beloved tv classic here in The United States. (Heck my own Dad even watched Speed Racer when he was a kid.) And we LOVE him to the point we made our own American sequel. (And it was the only live action anime movie adaptation made by Americans to have a decent movie.) But Speed is so beloved by anime fans and cartoon fans alike because if it weren’t for Speed Racer and Astro Boy anime wouldn’t have made it to the West.
Speed Racer has more American relevance, but Astro Boy practically created television anime as we know and it had far reaching creative influence. Astro Boy is to (at least televised) anime as Snow White or something was to American film animation.
Leo/Kimba (3:56-4:22), Princess Knight (4:48-5:14), Gegege no Kitaro (5:42-6:09), Sally the Witch (7:30-7:57), Dororo (11:07-11:35) and Speed Racer (12:00-12:28) are my favorites from here! Wish "Gegege" would be released on NA DVD
Super interesting video about anime. I actually know I watched "Attack No. 1" when I was small though in my country it's known as "Mila Superstar". Guzura/Guzula would be a character I'd enjoy to see in a modern adaption at some point. I like cute Dragons.
As much as i love this video i need to point out that you were actually explaining what the astroboy 1980s version's plot is, not the 60s version. Theyre pretty different in the beginning and almost all of what you said after toby dying and astro taking his place is not even part of the 60s plot XD
Nicely done and great choices. My only complaint is that you address some of the shows by the English names and others by their Japanese names. Kimba you call by the English Leo, Mach Go Go Go by the English Speed Racer yet stick with Tetsujin 28 instead of the English Gigantor but then go back to AstroBoy instead of Tetsuwan Atom. Maybe for future videos you could include both names if the shows are known by more than one. Gatchaman should be the exception though as we have at east 3 English 'translations' of the series (Battle of the Planets, Eagle Riders, G Force)
@@mrpellagra2730 the two classic anime shows are related though. They’re just made and released a year apart. The character is actually called Leo in Japan after MGM’s mascot Leo the Lion. Kimba is the character’s international nickname anyway, and is actually the Wolof name for a pepper like spice coming from Senegal.
Has anyone else seen Tiger Mask? If so, how is it? I'm kinda curious about this show. I know it's #5, but could someone please tell me if it's REALLY GOOD or OK or something like that? Thanks!
You've got the description of the 1980 Astro Boy series, but you're talking about the 1963 series! And since you're showing the Japanese version, you should get the Japanese names right. It's Dr. Tenma, not Boyton, and Professor Ochanomizo not Dr. Elfun. Dr. Tenma sold his son to the robot circus, he wasn't lost on a cruise ship. There was no dog jump in the 1963 series. You also should use Astro's Japanese name, Atomu (Atom).
