- A Sony PS-FL77 Linear Tracking turntable that will rotate, but the tonearm will not move at all. It was an easy repair that only needed a small belt to be replaced, and it is as good as new now.
Thank you to these people that have supported my channel by making a donation or by having me repair their unit

There is nothing like putting a 1970's K-Tel record on a linear track direct drive turntable as a bench test after a simple (but thorough) repair!😇
This is a very helpful video as I'm doing the very same job tomorrow. Tone arm barely moves.
BTW If the arm doesn't or can't return to its stop; all the buttons on the front stop responding (except the Open/Close). This had me worried until I worked out the cause.
Excellent diagnosis and repair of this Sony turntable.
Thank you very much for this demonstration! I've been working on a Sony PS-FL77 Linear Tracking Turntable, circa 1983, that I bought. I may have found an answer to my technical problem for tonearm not working correctly at all. A Seller advertised that he Serviced, and changed the tonearm belts! At first front tray did not close, miraculously it does now; found a small gray plastic part inside. More importantly, now the tonearm does not work correctly!
By the way, at 21:11 the slots have to align with the holes of the platter mat. Thumbs up certainly, and I Subscribed. Also, at 4:00 I used, for the most part, a magnetic screw driver to remove that top Reinforcement plate.🔉🎵🎶
At the 31:50 mark you placed a paper disc on it with 33, 45 and 78 hash markings. What is it and what are you looking for when you use it? It looks like something I could print and laminate to use. Is that correct?
You are correct. It is a strobe disc that is downloadable from Vinylengine.com under tools, strobe discs. Yes I did print it out and used packing tape to laminate it.
NorCal715 thanks 🙏
hy.... where i can get that tool to measure belts?
As far as I know, no one makes them anymore. You will have to look on eBay of similar for a used one.
OMG, I finally fixed my PS-FL77 after over 6 years. I got this at a Good Will for $30 and REALLY wanted this to work but didn't know the problem till I watched this video and it was the exact same problem. I had a spare tape deck belt I had lying around it though it was a bit thicker then the FL77 belt, it was the exact same diamiter and it works perfectly and the tone arm moves normally now. Thank you.
Excellent sir 👍👍👍🌹🌹🌹
Nice job!! Figuring out the triggering for the platter and the tonearm set down was brilliant! I remember when the linear turntables came out. I bought one at Pacific Stereo (remember them, LOL?) I think it was a Technics. It seemed too fidgity and expensive in store. I returned it without opening the box. I'm glad these units were more durable than they seemed at the time. Glad to hear your family is getting better. I can't imagine what you all have been through! 😢
I have the earlier Sony FL1 (tangential not linear) and it is a similar 'intelligence test" to put back together to this one. These are nice decks, although this does seem considerably more flimsy than the FL1 which is quite tank-like. Still well worth keeping though, I like this era of Japanese engineering!
Great job
Great intuition on the potentiometer adjustment to realign the tone arm. Doubt I would have just sensed that the screw served that particular purpose on this unit.
will that play 10" 33 rpm?
Yes it will. It has a separate speed control switch.
It has no sensor for 10" records (only 7" or 12"). You have to cue the tonearm manually to the lead-in groove and then it will play normally to the end.
Was a fantastic help getting my unit going thank you for posting ,but the tone arm moves to left in rest position when power is applied. Any ideas why?
Did you ever figure this out? I have one of these and have the same problem. Power on tonearm angle to the left. Power off it angles to the right. It never seems to align straight as it moves across the record. Frustrating because it DOES play, just not well. Thanks for any help you can offer.
I wish your family well.
Thanks for your content!
Hope you and your family are well.
Thank you so much Barry! They are getting better day by day.
Nice video.
You replaced the belt, then the metal finger to the correct place for the direction switches
and adjusted the needle landing position.
Not just the belt as you ended the video.
Smashing repair :-D
