Dozens speak about racism in schools at rescheduled Powhatan School Board meeting

- Parents, teachers and students in Powhatan County finally got a chance to have their voices heard at a school board meeting on Monday night after it had to be rescheduled last week due to overcrowding.
Community members packed the Pocahontas Landmark Center on the night of Tuesday, March 12, hoping to talk to the Powhatan County School Board about how the school district is responding to alleged racism in schools.
So many people attended the meeting that it had to be shut down by the fire marshal and rescheduled to Monday, March 18. The Powhatan High School auditorium, which can hold more people, was chosen as the venue for the rescheduled meeting.
“I've been called the N word, monkey, slave," said a Powhatan County 7th grader during the rescheduled meeting on Monday. "I've reported this every day and nothing's changed.”

This video was about Blacks being called Niggers. If there are other issues with other schools, then bring those schools to the for front but don't use this for your complaints. It's sort of like, I talk about Black lives matter and you say Blue lives matter too.

I watch this with tears in my eyes. This is a problem that needs to be fixed. Before a student comes to school and defend self. Then there is a bigger problem. School board and parents remember the old saying pressure burst pipes. Answer that question what happens? When a student defends themselves because they’re tired????????????? As a student of Powhatan high school and a former student of Powhatan middle school I can confidently say that we have a discrimination problems within our schools. It’s not hearsay, it’s not an over reaction, it’s discrimination against not only students of color, but queer students, students with disabilities, and students with international heritage. We have a problem, let’s fix it.
The truth needs to be consistently hurled like the comment above!

don't conflate stupidity, lack of education, idiocy with racism. My point about racism is that racists know AND believe what they are doing WITH the knowledge of what racism is. Stupid kids do stupid stuff but perhaps education can cure them. Perhpas. For young minds, you kinda got to hope that education would help.

The overall majority of these people live in Richmond, Va, not Powhatan County. The first lady even admitted that she was not a resident. These racist claims are all he said, she said, situations that are hard to prove.

The only reason why this is news is that the person being accused of racism is white and that the school is nearly 90% white in an 84% white county. If this were to happen in a black school to a white child in Newport News, Portsmouth, or Hampton, it wouldn't have been news.

No i lived there for years nothing is alledge. I mean they have pictures gow can it be alledged...they only said alleged so it wont seem true to public.....Powhatan county is racist. I have got racially profiled and harassed in that county so many times. They will pull you over just for a nice car your are black. White kids looking like Dylan Roof up there. They take pride in being racist. They have racist teachers like Mr. Nolan he was a math teacher I don't know if he still teachers there though. Just be careful in powhatan If your black. I need people that aren't from Powhatan to stop acting as if we were just being sensitive at that meeting. I am fucking over it. I am one of the people shown speaking, along with my friend, her mother, and my wonderful drama director. Calling us snowflakes isn't going to fix anything. The day after my speech, I had a person come up to my Asian friend and apologize for all the jokes he'd made, then proceed to say he wasn't truly sorry and simply didn't want to get in trouble. Powhatan county has been racist for a long time, and while this was a horrible situation, I'm happy it called some attention to this growing problem.
You should probably do some research and get some stats to see what is going on US wide and world wide.

According to Le Monde, 9 in 10 black people in France claim to be victims of discrimination. According to Gallup, 1 in 4 Black workers in the US claim to face discrimination at work. But to be honest, these numbers are irrelevant. We are talking about POWHATAN. I am quite literally in high school, and I admit to being inexperienced on world issues. What I do know is what is happening around me. I am proud of my county, but slurs and discrimination are thrown around frequently. I acknowledge that racism cannot be "fixed," but there are things that Powhatan can do to lessen racist action and to help people of color not feel as alone in their school system. That's the only intention I have.

My kids were bullied by blacks in school I have been told to move in stores by blacks because they saw me coming. I've had other things happen too. This is terrible I agree and it should change 💯. But here’s the thing racism will always exist no matter how old you are and no matter where you go in life. It doesn’t make it right and we should strive for change. But we as a society need to teach our children how to be strong and not be so sensitive to what other ignorant people say and do it’s a reflection of there parents and their environment again not a good enough reason but that’s reality. We as parents need to be more involved with our kids and make sure that we are teaching them acceptance of all races not just African American. Someone is not going to hurt you just because of the color of your skin. This starts at home. Rather than teach our children to always trying to be them victim teach them to be better than that. It’s hard out that no matter where you go and no matter where you in life.

Most "race incidents" where swastikas and mean words are found at high schools and colleges end up being hoaxes, I can't recall one that wasn't over the past decade. This is what CRT promotes.
