I love how you two can always have an informed, measured and nuanced discussion about particular topics whilst still maintaining a sense of fun, informality and entertainment. But always grounded in social rights, justice and community.
This is nothing new, of course. As every single one of your videos feel like this. It almost feels like the I'm just sitting down with a couple of mates and chatting about architecture.
Love what you two are doing with Archimarathon. Thank you, Andrew, Kevin, Mark, your families and all other investors. This is a wonderful project and hopefully it serves as an example of a viable formula for developers to follow, not only in Aus.
Love you guys, love from South Africa.

A project done by two lectures wherein they changed the multi-unit res landscape, with a focus on sustainability, by investing their own time and money while understanding the systems that create architecture at a base financial level from inception, by taking on a discipline outside of architecture in order to show the holes in that discipline. 😂😂😂
This is going to be one of those projects that one and everyone in one’s firm would have learned about in first year as an example of best practice and how devoted one should be to architecture.
It reminds me of the type of thinking that went into VPUU in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, South Africa: Acupuncture architecture that successfully transformed a notoriously dangerous route in a townships (plagued by socio-economic challenges) into the safest pedestrian artery by the architects getting involved in other practices and involving the community. It was all some of my lectures spoke about 😄😂.
So excellent work, I am sure you both are an inspiration to your students.

Great to see more architects venturing into developing. I think a key way to address climate issues and affordability issues is by doing this ourselves and not leaving it in the hands of people that care more for profits than anything else (realtors, traditional developers, etc).
I just completed my first development on my own (owner/arch/dev) last month and it was a lot of fun. Super stressful like you mentioned but I think most of that comes with just the first time experiences. On top of the HUGE learning curve that comes with developing, the fact that we both went through the global pandemic and economic crisis and still came out on top says a lot. Says a lot to anyone that survived doing something this risky over the last year. Even with the over all price increases I still made great returns (assuming you did as well).
I would really suggest that you do not completely walk away from developing. I know its not for everyone but we (both the profession and society) need more people like you who have the experience and and the desire to put community before profits.
It would also be a great video to make showing the breakdown of the costs on your development. Show the numbers and the process you all went through to get the project started.

This fine little building would fit right into any Montreal neighbourhood, where the norm is a small apartment building with individual entrances reached by outside staircases and balconies. It would only need some adjustments to deal with the city's harsh winters. Montreal's housing stock is dominated by what is called the "missing middle" housing. Unsurprisingly, Montrealers pay considerably less of their income on rent than dwellers in other cities, and they have a huge choice of types of housing.

Great to get an insight into the ethical housing model! How do you think Architects/Architecture can play a role in pushing this type of process for the suburban housing market? Obviously harder with less ability to share infrastructure costs and more reliance on cars, lack of public transport etc. I live in Tasmania and get so disheartened seeing new sub divisions being chopped up and blocks sold to large housing building companies who then offer the land as a house and land package. It just destroys any chance of the subdivision being thought about at a communal level with sharing of infrastructure. What can we as architects do to try and push into that space to create better, denser, more community focused suburbs? I feel like its possibly too late, even for Tas?

It would be nice if homes for sale had to include heating/cooling costs over 5 years (or expected energy costs* for new builds) adjacent to the actual purchase price of the home. that would incentivize better development that balances costs and benefits. I'd bet we'd see better building practices.
*I bet we could get the calculation down to a few variables, such as insulation in floor, walls, and attic plus the ACH50 number.

Really interesting, guys! Good work AMA, I´ve been following the evolution of this project on Ig and it´s so cool.I think that most of the times when architects are also developers, tend to neglect some important conditions that good architecture has, and this is fortunately just the opposite of that. A very well designed and developed work.
Affordable, efficient and well designed houses used to be an important concern, even when results might have been far from perfect, it was a real intention to think about how could be the best way to live.
I believe this is a good starting point and hope it inspires many other developments

Or alternatively, what would have to have dropped out of the scope/specs to accomodate design costs? That said, if affordability was tackled through economic reform to rebalance the function vs investment ratio of housing in Australia (CGT and CG exemption reform), perhaps that would help absorb the issue that had to be absorbed in this project by the architects.
