I am new to steaming and am still figuring things out. I watched your videos for tips. What I found through trial and error isn’t to start at the top of the garment but to start at the bottom for the reason that steam rises. If you start at the bottom and pull the material taut, all the excess steam rises up as passes through the garment. As you move up, the excess steam has already done the work and more times than not, you don’t have to concentrate on the top sections as much. Let the steam do the work!
Whoa I literally JUST got finished using my new garment steamer for the first time and then I saw this video pop up on my feed...I am a total Makers Clean fan girl....thank you for teaching me how to clean literally everything! ❤️❤️❤️
You have to be careful steaming clothes hanging on the door. You can damage the paint. It is also tricky to hold the garment and not get burned. A friend suggested I buy a silicon oven glove for protection when I get to the edge of the garment near my hand.
Try steaming shirts from the inside-out while using your other hand to pull it taut. Start from the bottom working your way up. Some of the steam gets trapped and rises upwards and so the steam is doing more work for you to de-wrinkle the upper part of the shirt before you actually start steaming there. I've been using a larger vertical steamer for years now to do my work shirt for that day in the morning. It also came with a clip to hold the fabric right up against the steaming head for creases but I realised I can do without it if I hold the folded area taut enough for the crease and steam it. Takes a minute or so with the inside-out method for a shirt (and the less time it takes to de-wrinkle, the less moisture it retains and the faster the shirt dries afterwards). I'd say with a vertical powerful steamer (it makes a huge difference compared to handled ones), it gets 80% of the job done which an iron could do but with 20% of the effort. I think the next step up from vertical streamers is to get a Karcher SC3 and add the garment nozzle attachment. I've experimented with the SC1 with great results but would need a third hand to keep the steam button pressed while holding the garment nozzle and holding the shirt taut. The Karcher SC3 steam pressure is no joke, would heat up fast, has continuous stream and probably fitting for your channel since it can be used for cleaning as well!
Love your videos! Just a tip, its actually better to steam from bottom to top as takes less time. The steam will rise so it covers more of the garment from the beginning.
I recently bought a steamer from my local Aldi here in Australia . And I have been quite happy about it , I mainly use it for my partner’s shirts when I get lazy to take iron board out. I also sew as a hobby so ironing is very crucial in sewing, so to me steaming can’t replace my iron
This was a timely video since I’m about to buy a steamer. Thanks for telling me what to look for. I think steaming and ironing both have their places. I’m one of those weird people who likes to iron 😀😀I find it relaxing but I mostly iron only linens nowadays. Thanks for a great video!
I have a tall steamer that I got years ago, before steamers really got big. I'm a sewist. It has a built in hook to hang the clothing on. I have a hand held steamer for travel. I iron pillowcases and other flat pieces. xo~linda
As a fashion reseller, I prepare dozens of garments for photo listing every day. I've considered steaming but already own an iron with steam function that uses tap water and works great for me. But I found this video interesting and learned some new tips! I'd be interested to know if steamers can be used to actually spot clean and/or add fresh scent to garments or other items, or if there are other uses for steamers I should consider. Thanks!
I bought an upright 20 years ago and it broke within a month. I bought a mini one 5 years ago and it works, but it only steams 1-2 garment at a time. I hang my clothes on the shower rod in my bathroom. I saw your video in my queue and wanted to see and hear what you have to say. I love my steamer but I dislike twisting the top to open the water dispenser. Yours has a higher capacity and more tools.
I just spritz a wrinkled garment with a water bottle (kind of like Downy wrinkle release but just with water). 9 times out of 10 it gets the wrinkles out just fine. For serious wrinkles I still use the iron.
steamer all the way - I hate ironing. I like to get a spray bottle of water mist the clothes before I start steaming. The wrinkles come out even faster. Years ago I had the BIG steamer you mentioned and it was a pain that I've just gone handheld and haven't looked back. Yes, I have to refill the tank more often but it saves storage space which I am lacking. Always follow the rules about the distilled water!! If it says it and you think meh who cares well eventually it will catch up to you and it starts working not great to eventual break down clogged... basically go buy yourself a new steamer. This applies to steam mops as well which I stupidly only put tap water in because I was too lazy.
Thanks for making this video. I am interested in buying the steamer you showcased in the video but got lost in all the links none of which were for the steamer in question and the subject of this video!
I am little confused why you did not use a Steamer Glove near the bottom, there is no way you steamed all the way to the bottom, without it being to hot for your fingers, so that would mean the bottom never got steamed ?
Great video! Thank you for sharing. Are you planning on doing a Daily Cleaning video at some point? Loved your weekly cleaning video, but would love to see what you do on a daily basis and your tips and tricks! :)
Hmm, I see no link or product details for the steamer you're using and recommending in this video? Please can you update that? (Only see a link for a portable steamer in the description, below?) Thanks!
Ironing and pressing are 2 different things, even if we use the words interchangeably. Pressing is lifting and lowering the iron, to avoid stretching the fabric. Ironing is running the metal plate around the fabric. The seamstress in me knows this matters when taking care of fabrics.
Thank you. In my experience not a good idea to do it hanging behind a door. If there is no other way then better hang a clothing plastic cover on an empty hanger over that part of the door first to protect the door wood from humidity and damage. I have had the experience of damaging a wood table top by steaming clothes. Eventhough a folded fabric sheet was over it.
