Dude, I love how you explained everything. Simple, really easy to understand, made me feel how fun it is (as opposed to being overwhelmed by information). Great video!
Dude, super concise, and all the information I could have needed. Thank you! I feel like I understand more about drums and programming than I did before! :)
The way I do my midi drum tracks is I record multiple tracks in real-time. Example, I put the kick drum on one track and perform live using a keyboard. To help me keep the beat I would strike a key for the kick drum but since the snare hasn't been recorded yet I would thump on the table. I know it's weird but it's a lot faster than drawing midi notes, i just hate drawing midi notes. Anyway it's best to have separate track for drums, it's easier when mixing. After that, i quantize to check for errors
His instruction is very good. But unfortunately, my brain doesn't work that way. I can't keep up. I feel more comfortable following your procedures. I like how you thump the table. However it might sound to some it is a great tip for those who think more like you and me. Could you do a video showing your process. I seem to get it more for my ADHD learning processes
Depends on the person I suppose, but it's waaay faster literally clicking in the notes then actually performing them. Isn't that obvious? Also as sombody who has over 40 + tracks in a song having the drums confined to one track is much simpler than a separate track for each drum-piece. Mixing can always be done, but the composition remains more important.
I've been trying to write beats with no drumming experience for the past year and a half. I learned more in 5 minutes than in 40 videos combined. Thank you so much for this video man! :)
Here’s a tip, most songs that have the best fills (imo) keep it very basic by playing around with the groove (the bass snare bit) like adding an extra snare or just a snare roll it doesn’t need to mental af, unless you’re doing punk or metal
This is the ultimate beginners guide to drum pattern would suggest to everyone who is starting music production Edit:and it is so easy to understand Beautifully explained
Actually, in Western music beats 1 and 3 are accented in 4/4 -time music. Beats 2 and 4 just feel accented because that's where the snare usually hits.
Well, "a MIDI" isn't a singular thing. There are digital instruments which are controlled either by a MIDI controller (such as an electric keyboard) or directly by your DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). So in order to make a MIDI drum beat you would at least need the digital instrument, and possibly a MIDI controller depending on whether you wanted to play the part yourself or just draw it into the track. So if your question was "Do I need a MIDI controller" then the answer is: no, as long as you have a digital instrument and a DAW to put it in.
Nick's Good Universe you can maybe try using notation software like noteflight or musescore (which are both free). the samples might sound not great, but I guess that's better than nothing lol
Get Reaper, the trial never expires, it just shows you a 5 second splash box forever. It's got great compatibility so your VST, VST2, VST3, etc. will work. It's simpler than most DAW's and more powerful
Ableton Live is insanely cool & powerful. I'm not a musician, but love playing around - the lite version of Live is only $100 and well worth it. A free version also comes with several $100 midi keyboard/pad combos.
I think when it comes to writing drum parts, it is my weak point. I can produce polyrhythms and repeatable complex grooves however, fills are something I have not done very often as I don't fully comprehend their utility in musical narrative. I struggle to ascertain what form the paintbrushes that are drum fills give to the overall painting of music.
I see drum fills as a use for transitions... If you want to go from one section to another you can use a fill to build to that change and really emphasize the new section arriving! ... That how I have always viewed them anyway
What count do cymbal crashes go? I think its weird to think about it because its on the one?.. it twists the brain because its an ending sound on a start.. Id like to hear someone elses approch or solution..
What drum program software are you using, brother? I want something like that where I can just mouse click where I want the next hit! I would _really_ appreciate an answer, thank you!!
Every single DAW will let you do that! It's called midi, and every DAW will let you 'draw midi'. The specific DAW I'm using is Logic Pro X, but you could use: Ableton Live, Pro Tools, Reaper etc
ບ້ານລາວ ສະຕູດີໂອ idk if you still need a software or not but GarageBand for iOS or Mac is free and Reaper is free for Windows PCs. I recommend GarageBand
You should be able to create a midi track, of which you can set the instrument to be the midi drum kit, then create an event on the timeline, double click on it and you should be good to go!
metronome is the key! i learned to play instrument using only metronome, Chords, Melodies and theories on my own. i don't know why even someone taught me how to play guitar, piano or drums, still can't learn, but instead i only learn and master it on my own! LOL. maybe something's wrong with me!
We recently reworked this video and added some extra information! Check it out here for the 2020 version: ruclips.net/video/bQLlgMJMdrA/видео.html

thank you my drummer is passed out on the floor and we need to practice
😂😂
keep in mind that the drummer only has two hands, unless your drummer is Marco Minnemann
Drumers also using legs
Are you sure? Rick Allen isn’t sure.

That's exactly how I've considered doing it, except not quantizing it if I'm looking for a more human-sounding mix
Thank you so much man, the breaking down (no pun intended) of the fills and different styles was great!

actually the strong beat is 1, and you could say the 3 is "half" strong. So, to give strenght to the 2 and 4 they hit the snare
You're inspiring me to think about drums in a different way.

what program is this? i need to make some drum beats. what other programs are out there that are free?

What DAW are u using? Is there any good free software that u know of?
Logic X Pro! Garageband is decent! I haven't used any others to be able to comment on them!
MrRingo123 studio one prime is really good but doesn't have many plugins and you can't buy any until u upgrade the program but it has many instruments

@@TheMusicLab thank you so much :D
Could you please do a video like this but for hip-hop drums ? thanks x
It the exact same method! You just use different samples!
Use 808 samples, and put the kick just off the 3.
what about the call and answer. I think that this is the most important when programming drum.
Call and a answer tends to mean using multiple instruments and is a technique normally used for counter melodies. What do you mean?
What i mean is that those drums dont have any change over the time.
ruclips.net/video/7zwXEFXz-fc/видео.html
This only really applies to percussive instruments used in 'Samba' and African drumming, not a drum kit, used in popular rock and pop.
