Incredible how everybody has different experiences. I've used a safety razor in the last 6 months, I've tried different blades, different shaving creams and everything and still prefer cartidge. I get a smoother and way faster shave with no irritation at all while with a SR I need to multiple passes to get a smooth shave and always end up with some kind of irritation
Happy to hear you’re giving the safety razor a good try. Definitely experience makes a difference. After nearly a year using one, I go fast and seldom cut myself. Will be interesting to see what you think after a month. As mentioned before, I’m a big fan of a safety razor and the smooth shave it provides. Wouldn’t trade it. Happy shaving!
When I first started razor shaving my head, I cut myself many times. One day I picked up my wife's Venus razor, and loved it, and never looked back. That's what I use now, and no more blood letting.
Whenever I am in Bali, I buy the same Gillette Twin blade razors ( identical packaging) as in Australia, except the ones in Bali are made in Indonesia, and the big difference is that the blades don't stick out as far as the ones in Australia. So I don't get the close shave that I do in Australia. I hated using them, but now I'm starting to think they are better, as they leave your head feeling only a bit stubbly, like fine sandpaper, and I'm starting to prefer that.
I have been using a safety razor on my face for years and only started shaving my head yesterday.. so I just used the safety razor I have. Today I used conditioner instead of the Mitchell's Wool Fat and got a much better shave .. I am using an antique Gillette can't remember the model but it's from early 60s And if your using a safety razor FFS DONT PUSH HARD. Let the weight of the razor do the job no hard that that.
Everyone's head is shaped and the contours are different. I've been using the Gillette Sensor Excel for over 20 years to shave my head bald. Plus I don't use shaving cream. I use hair conditioner. The slicker it is, the more it glides across your head. Just make sure your hands aren't slippery or the razor handle can slide and causing a nick on your head.
the OmniShaver is THE way to go! I got mine a week ago and can get a full head shave in about 2-3 minutes. Perfectly smooth, self cleaning, self sharpening. No nicks, cuts, or razor burn. It is brilliant!
I tried 5 and 2 edges razers, so my general conclusion is that 3 edges razer is the best of all ! I use only "Gillette Blue 3" since years and it is the best for me of all 5 edges crap razors which I have tried (also it's not too expensive).
I started with the 5 bladed razors. I shaved my beard and my head, so i went through the entire razor lube strip in one shave. Unfortunately, every hair it cut, was cut under the skin, leading to an entire head full of ingrown hairs. Also, yes, my multi blade clogged like crazy. Finally broke down and tried a DE, and did not look back.
Clogging was a problem using 3-blade and 5-blade safety razors. Not so much any more. Lather preparation is important for preventing clogging, and is cleaning the blade-head after the shave is done.
Thank you do much for this video. I ordered my first safety razer yesterday. My brother works for shaver shop and he gave me some shaving cream and a silvertip brush a while ago but had no understanding or need for it when I wasn't shaving seriously. I have used 5 bladed razers for ages and my head is always irritated after a shave and I get red dots. Hopefully my first safety razer shave tomorrow won't hack me up.
I kind of stayed of wet shaving my head because I tried so many things for my face, but always had ingrown hear in my neck (also with DE razors). So i just kept a stubble beard to avoid it. However, out of frustration with my philips oneblade that get dull so fast, i grabbed my DE razor and shaved my head. It felt so good and no irritation , ingrown hair etc. Only cut one little bumb. I now use my DE razor wirth great pleasure (no cuts thus far) and use the one blade for the little bumb on my head. Probably because my hair on my head is quite different than beard hair. My beard hair is like metal wire...small pieces can easily become a splinter.
Same situation for me... I'm being bald since May 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic, and and I thought that the best thing to be bald was a classic double-edged razor, I bought a Qshave and to shave my face it works well, I lack a little more technique but it is fine. But, but, but to shave my head with the QShave is totally different, firstly it is very uncomfortable, then I cut myself sometimes, and boy does a lot of blood come out of my head, it looks like a carnage when I cut myself. Days ago I tried a simple disposable cartridge razor and I hate to admit it, the shave was far superior to the QShave razor. I can't believe that a cheap disposable razor is far superior to a classic razor for shaving the head, but it was. I don't want to go back to disposable cartridges, I feel like I'm backing down in my technique, it would also be very expensive for me, and I've always liked the classic shaving ritual. But there are times when you don't have much time and you have to do everything faster and there you can't do so much ritual. Having to shave your head with a disposable cartridge and your face with a classic razor makes no sense. I hope to find the final solution: a perfect head and face shave, cheap and fast ... will there be a real solution or something like that? thanks and regards
I know its been a while since you posted this video. I hope this info helps. I keep my head shaved, (pay no mind to the profile pic, it's old). I have found that when your hair gets a little long, say you haven't shaved in a few days, then the safety razor is your best friend. Use it as a prep tool. A quick once over before you use your regular razor. The "Gillette Mach 3 Sensitive" is the closest blade that I have found. I can actually use it without soap or cream. Just wet my head and go. However, if you are going to use a safety razor you need to invest in a good shave soap. Shaving cream or gel is not the same and it will not provide the same results. You would literally be better off just lathering your head or face with dial. Using a high quality shave soap makes all of the difference in the world. There is a reason that people who use safety razors use shave soap. Also I use shave soap with my Gilette. Invest in a nice quality horse hair brush. Believe it or not the second most important thing is the blade. "Astra Superior Platinum" blades are the best on the market. They deliver a close shave, the blade lasts for multiple shaves and they do not irritate the skin. Likewise the "Gillette Mach 3 Sensitive" razor will last you many shaves. It also does not irritate the skin, at all. Even being a disposable it is the best that I have found and I have tried them all. I hope this helps you and your viewers in your quest for the closest, best shave possible.
I used a Mach 3 for about 10 years and loved it but hated how expensive it was. My brother bought me a safety razor and 100 blades for Christmas one year and I absolutely love it. It takes a bit more care and time to develop your technique but the quality of shave is unrivalled. With the mach 3, I used to shave every second day but with the Edwin Jagger safety razor and a Gillette silver blue blade, I get a much closer shave and it looks great even into that third day if I feel like giving myself an extra day between shaves. I’ve tried feather blades before and they’re also great but frighteningly sharp and they take a bit more care and respect to use neatly and safely. Still, the investment in a safety razor is great. If you spend £30 on a razor then buy yourself a load of blades, (varying prices but still considerably cheaper than cartridges) you’ll not have to worry about how often you enjoy a shave and the expense involved. Definitely the best switch up in my personal care routine
But cartridges are great if you’re in a rush and you need a tidy up. That being said, once you get used to a safety razor, you can give yourself a great shave in roughly the same amount of time
@@Baldcafe I just tried it and loved it. It was really smooth and I loved the fact that my hair didn't get clogged between the blades. It does take a bit longer to shave though.
I couldn't make it through the entire video but I never heard him even mention how horrible plastic razors and cartridges are for the environment. That's my number one reason for switching.
Yeah I have seen in a lot of the amazon reviews for the safety razor blades that a lot of people opt for ones wrapped in paper to avoid the plastic use. Razor blades that come packaged in plastic boxes etc getting pretty bad reviews. I've been living in China for the last 5 years and the whole war against plastic thing isn't talked about much here but I totally agree with it. good luck with using the safety razor 👌
I am 55 years old. I have used every new gimmick that come out but go back to the double edge. It is still the best thing. There are now so much more brands of blades and razors available to the shaver. There is a learning curve on using the double edge. Sadly the new shaver often don’t learn how to use it correctly.
As a barber as well as a guy who shaves his head all the time i get this question a lot. My response is always that to use what you feel comfortable with. In the shop i shave heads with a straight edge. At home i use a halftime razor. It does a awesome job!. I found using a cartridge razor did not work for me because my hands tend to get slippery. Double edge works great but you have to know what your doing or you are going to slice up your head. I also use a foil shaver at the shop and keep one at home for touch ups. But i do have to say. Men, if your shaving your head treat yourself once in a while and hit the barbershop. We will not only shave your head but provide a scalp massage!!!
Person who learns to shave his face with double edge razor can learn to shave his head with double edge razor. Only requires a bit of care and practice. Nearly the same thing; just some of what you are shaving you cannot see. You can use feel to monitor what is not easily visible. Changing the razor angle as you go - just care and practice, about like you might do with the face.
Great in depth video! How often are you replacing heads in cartridge razor? for me one head lasts about week and a half (shaving my head every day) it seems like a very short time for me. And those replacements are so expensive.
Michal Jurečka dude I change mine like every 2 or 3 shaves! That’s shaving once every 2 days. As soon as it starts to tug a bit I change it. Nothing worse than a sore back of the neck!
Keep the clogging down using a finger wipe before each rinse of the razor (disposable one or the cartridge head). When done with each shave, wipe the blades on a towel USING OPPOSITE DIRECTION than done in shave strokes. Cartridges or disposables will last for many more shaves this way. For me, the limit was about 17 shaves. Not everybody will be able to that many of shaves.
Pro tip to make your blades last 4 times longer...... Use a hairdryer and dry your razor fully after shaving....... Also every week, run your razor backwards along a pair or jeans to clean up the blades even more ;)
@@SteveWKk So you want to hear more advice like that? Clean and then wipe the blades against a towel (opposite the direction the edge points). My disposables and cartridges last many several shaves this way.
@@The_Bearbarian Shut up and pay attention. Hold the razor at exactly 30° and maintain that position -- your shoulders will be moving not your wrist. Take slow and short strokes at first; make sure to shave with the grain, across the grain, and finally against the grain. Keep practicing and you'll be shaving like a man in no time. Two good razors to start with are the Merkur 34C or the Muhle R89.
I use the Shick 3 but they are expensive....SIGNIFICANTLY expensive...so much so that I now only shave when my head starts to look like a #1 skinhead. Cool and useful video. A week into being a baldie, using a single blade razor. Watching this I think (a) I need to buy a new razor, as mine is 100 year old, comes in a Bakelite case; looks great on the bathroom shelf, but cut myself every time :(. (b) I had not realized technique was so important, so thanks for the heads up (pun intended) I bought a pitbull electric shaver today, but nowhere near as close, so I will save that for my camping trips, or anywhere I am where a wet shave isn't possible. I use a straight razor for my face, and my own made shaving cream, pity I can't use that for my head as they are fantastic imo. And hot towels! Thanks again :)
Alex Potts how did it go? I’m looking to shave my head for the first time. What razor would you recommend for a beginner? And what products should i use?
@@antfazo4783 I've got a DE safety razor which I have just bought and used once and I liked it. But I had been using a Gillette with fusion which has unknowingly given me bad razor burn. Can't beat a Mach 3, been shaving it for 20 yrs, there is a technique but my barber showed me how to use it and now it's so quick, so close and can use the razor in different directions. Mach 3 5 stars from me.
I uses to live for the Mach 3 but I feel like a out 10yrs ago or so they changed the angle of the blades making it hard to get the contours of a head. I switched to Sensor 3 and thats been my default ever since.
try the new Leaf Razor. Fantastic shave and you use double edge blades. You can have one blade or two, or three. Just snap them in half and you have the best of both worlds, a cartridge shaver with out the expensive refills.
Which kind of safety razor for head shave? Simply this. If several days, longer hair, use double edge razor. If few days growth, shorter hair, use disposable or cartridge safety razor.
San Rosario 😆 I wish I was sponsored. I should be. But no, honestly it’s just the best razor I’ve found so far. Cleanest and most comfortable head shave.
Awesome video, can't wait to see how you get along with different safety razors and blades. If you get a chance I would recommend checking out a RUclips channel called I'd Lather Be Shaving, they actually have gone into the history of the rise of cartridges from double edge blades in at least a couple of their videos.
Well I'm not about to take a safety razor to my head... that's living dangerous and I'll just stick with the Gillette Fusion ProGlide 5, it's the best razor out there true it's costly but you get what you pay for
Donald Allen right now I totally agree! I think I need to give it a good go though. If after say 1 month of really trying the safety razor, if it’s still no good then it’s pretty much decided. I think the best thing for me is the fact I can just whip out the Gillette and in 2 mins I’m done and good to go.
Don't forget the environmental impact of producing all the plastic and rubber for the cartridge razors which is then thrown away. With a safety razor, that single metal blade can be recycled.

I bought a pitbull electric shaver today, but nowhere near as close, so I will save that for my camping trips, or anywhere I am where a wet shave isn't possible.
I use a straight razor for my face, and my own made shaving cream, pity I can't use that for my head as they are fantastic imo.
And hot towels!
Thanks again :)
I shave my 2 year hair growth using safety razor
Amazing feel
That's Green t-shirt is getting myprotein right? I've been using their protein for years We should get a workout in sometime! 💪
We should! yes their t shirts are fantastic. I pretty much have one in every colour!
Harry you always have the best music for your video's, l was really loving the music for this one
Awesome, I take quite a long time to choose a good backing track so I'm glad someone noticed. Thank you.
I cannot get rid of razor burn on my head, I've tried everything
Except the safety razor. I'm going to try it tomorrow.
Becuase I was rushing the shave.
I now use a Gillette sensitive razor which only has 2 blades and will continueto use until the razor burn goes. This is the one I highly recommend. Do your research and try what is best for you. But do not rush the shave!! I didnt realise how sensitive my head was, because I couldnt see the back of my head 🤣🙈
Alex Potts Lol for sure. Thanks man
How'd the shave with the safety razor go? I cut my head pretty badly. I think you're right about fewer blades. I got a 5 blade and have too many bumps for my liking.
@@Flipmole123 1 small cut. It will be the razor I use when I get rid of this flipping razor burn. The Gillette safeguard is excellent as well
Try a Feather straight razor. Best shave ever. I don't use my safety razor anymore. Just gotta practice.
Yeah I have seen this "feather" stuff, what benefit does it give?
Hello! I prefer headblade moto hb6! Safety razor no. With headblade moto bbs 14 hours, and Gillette fusion proglide, and proshield 12 hours! For me the winner is headblade moto 6 blades! Dorco pace 10 hours bbs!
HB6 is good but i haven't used it in years
@@KingMatiCBeats i use hb6 bicause i like.i m use product headblade.now headblade moto hb6.post shave clearhead for ingrow hai ,cuts, and headlube moisture lotion matte.pre shave use head shed. It exfoliant scrub.my head is very clean and no ingrow hair and no cuts.excusmy for my english! I m italian
@@danielerubado32 i see you use all their stuff, ever tried a Gillette swirl razor???
This razor is not for the head! Is for the beard
@@danielerubado32 most razor are for the beard, question is have you tried it yourself?
Seen one on ebay for 125 bucks. A bit pricey.
Which kind of safety razor for head shave? Simply this. If several days, longer hair, use double edge razor. If few days growth, shorter hair, use disposable or cartridge safety razor.
hello.. have you tried the headblade?
Yes I have. Check out the video here. ruclips.net/video/nOhAxc7NqWo/видео.html
Are you sponsored by Gillett or are you just a Beckham fan?
San Rosario 😆 I wish I was sponsored. I should be. But no, honestly it’s just the best razor I’ve found so far. Cleanest and most comfortable head shave.
I found cartage far suppidior to souble edge.
Awesome video, can't wait to see how you get along with different safety razors and blades.
If you get a chance I would recommend checking out a RUclips channel called I'd Lather Be Shaving, they actually have gone into the history of the rise of cartridges from double edge blades in at least a couple of their videos.
I'll check it out. Thanks man.
It’s enough to look at the handle to see which one is a toy.
Bro what is that song at the end?
Well I'm not about to take a safety razor to my head... that's living dangerous and I'll just stick with the Gillette Fusion ProGlide 5, it's the best razor out there true it's costly but you get what you pay for
Donald Allen right now I totally agree! I think I need to give it a good go though. If after say 1 month of really trying the safety razor, if it’s still no good then it’s pretty much decided. I think the best thing for me is the fact I can just whip out the Gillette and in 2 mins I’m done and good to go.
I used the proglide as well. But after their recent advert, I'm switching lol.
@@ryanturner8577 same here lol
Hair texture has a LOT to do with the experience, prep, blade type and aftershave process.
Don't forget the environmental impact of producing all the plastic and rubber for the cartridge razors which is then thrown away. With a safety razor, that single metal blade can be recycled.
Totally agree. I mentioned this in a recent review of a leaf shave razor 👍
I have never had any issues with irritation or razor bumps but I do believe that Gillette is overpriced.
u look pretty big, do u work out ?
Best comment I've ever had. Yeah I've been working out for a good while now. Always tried to put on some muscle. I have a natural marathon runners body. I would be super skinny if I didn't work out.
@@Baldcafe thank u, is pretty important for a bald guy to be more muscular, could u recomand a work out program for home or maybe do a vid about it if im not asking too much
Check out some youtube channels. Some that I like include Jeff NIppard, Chris jones, Nick Write. I'm working on my own free fitness programme but its not really yet. I'll let you know when its out. Check out those guys they have some good videos.
@@Baldcafe Thank you
All I use is a safety razor! Soooooooo cheap too.
Thats the end goal 👍 I've switched recently too but still learning the ropes.
@@Baldcafe good man. Just take your time with it :)
Safety razors scare me, I have a few moles and bumps....and know it would not end well for me using those bad boys 😂
Nah! Safety razors are nothing to be afraid of, bro. They're a lot more comfortable and practical than cartridge razors. They provide closer shaves, too.
But man a safety razor will slice and dice any bumps you ma have. that is why I stopped and use the new gillette sensitive razor. mush safer for me!!
This razor is not for the head! Good for the beard
we will soon find out! I think I need to give the safety razor more of a chance before I write it off!
@@Baldcafe this razor is very good for the head. Not studies for the head! For me i prefer headblade, is very natural shave.for me!!
The way you talk is really irritating
Thank you for the video,it’s very helpful 😊
