Hey, someone should start a grandmother counseling program like psychiatrist Dixon Chibanda in Zimbabwe. Due to the stigma and scarcity of mental health professionals across the African continent, he started training grandmothers to do talk therapy on park benches where people can sit anonymously and get help for free without looking conspicuous.

@@ltlbuddha That's very true. I don't see those who seek help as "less than" but I do see myself as "less than" if I do. I'm so used to being "the strong one" and helping others that I feel as if I'm a burden or annoyance if I ask for help. People have mistaken my shame for pride when they notice I need help. I just don't want to bother people and fear coming off as a complainer.. And I know I need to go to therapy but I've sat in on a few sessions for moral support and was not impressed with it. It's too clinical and comes off more like a survey than an actual person talking to the patient and they really seem to love throwing pills at you. I asked a friend of mine for financial advice recently and she didn't quite have an answer for me . She said she sent me something in the mail after telling her how my husband is shaking in his boots but I'm looking for solutions. Now I'm anxious and thinking she's sent me money even though I didn't ask. She said my friendship means a lot to her and while I love her too, I feel a sense of dread when I get unexpected gifts. Either because I can't reciprocate the value of it, don't feel I deserve it, or feel like I'm not good enough. I have been chewed out in the past (just a little bit) for not asking said chewer for help. Last time it happened, I cried. Not because of their tone and they didn't hurt my feelings at all. I cried because it's then that it hit me that I continuously underestimate my importance to others. I felt a lot of love that day my cousin chewed me out and told me that I "should NEVER go without!".

@@Chris-ce7ve People also shouldn’t be ashamed to take medicine if they genuinely need it. If you don’t need it, that is great and I am glad that you have found appropriate solutions for your situation. However, every person is different and has unique needs. Just because something works for you doesn’t mean it will work for everyone. If a person with diabetes takes insulin, we wouldn’t look down upon them for taking necessary medication that they would die without. We wouldn’t say to them, “just change your diet”. Yes, diet choices can help in the long run, but in the short run there is need for immediate intervention. Similarly, people suffering from depression or other mental health illnesses may be able to make lifestyle changes for the long run, but sometimes immediate intervention is needed. Being totally against mental health medication in all circumstances is a very “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” approach and is contributing factor of why a lot of people who genuinely need it don’t take it and in the worst circumstances, commit suicide.

So I took a shot. I studied on my own and figured it out, understanding is creating a space of forgiveness, a space of listening and giving positive critical thinking skills in a compassionate way, I learned a lot from studying but mostly from my own experiences growing up, how to handle a bully…we are our own worst bully…we need to learn to love ourselves first and heal our own inner communication that is a the goal of every human isn’t it, learning to receive our love properly from creator in order to be givers of that same love. Anyways, it helped and I wanted to pass that along.

I’ve lost quite a few friends to suicide. My stepson’s biological father committed suicide early this year, and I had just spoken to him a few days before he did it. I wish that they had reached out in their darkest moments, even if not to me at least to someone. More so, I wish I had reached out myself knowing that they weren’t feeling all that great. If you know someone who may be having a hard time in life, please, don’t be afraid to check up on them. We need it now more than ever, to lift others up. Call someone you haven’t talked to in a long time and ask them how they’re doing. I’m pretty sure they would appreciate it and you may just make someone’s day. Be safe everyone and spread Love and positivity! Mahalo!

I heard someone say that every suicide creates a tear in the fabric in the community, and it's true, even if you don't feel or realize that you are part of a community. A classmate of mine killed himself (at school) when I was 15. He was not super popular, just a regular kid, but he left a hole in our class that we all felt, and still feel, even those who weren't good friends with him. I can't even put into words the devastation his death caused. Literally our entire class (and more) went to his funeral. Yet, before he did it, he told someone he felt no one cared about him. We are all more important than we realize.

OMG. I have to tell you this story. This past weekend, my mom was helping me sell my handmade soap at a local festival, it was a combined "pioneer and native" festival, so there was a pow-wow. I grabbed an Indian Taco for lunch, and while I was eating, a lady came up to look at our wares. My mom pointed out my lunch and asked the lady "Have you ever had an Indian Taco? They're amazing!" I look up, and this lady is covered in Native Tattoos, her T-Shirt had Native imagery... The only thing she was missing was regalia. Like... Mom. You didn't just ask an actual Native woman if she'd ever had Indian Tacos. I wanted to melt into the floor.

    • @ThisAlphaWolf
      @ThisAlphaWolf 2 года назад +3

Aww, she was just trying to make sure that somebody else didn't miss out on the yummy goodness that is an Indian Taco. Sounds like your mom was just trying to be kind and sweet. I'm sure if that woman was a Native, she probably realized that. We are typically pretty easy going about that kind of thing and personally, it makes me smile that your mom likes Indian Tacos enough that she would want to share them with other people. It's also good for the Native vendors selling them, it's free advertisement!

Everyone gets depressed sometimes. Sometimes, we just get over it and move on.
Sometimes it takes some help from our friends and family.
But sometimes, depression is overwhelming, and you can't get over it. It consumes you and takes everything out of you, until you can't do anything, but lay in bed, or sit in front of your computer all day...
And it's when you can no longer bear the weight of being in that 'personal limbo,' that you become desperate.
When friends and family can no longer reach you, when nothing matters anymore.
When you don't care, when you no longer hate or love, or have an opinion about anything.
The sun no longer shines even on a cloudless day.
You get dark 'inside,' and your energy is consumed by the darkness...

Recognising that you’ve reached that dark state, and that you don’t want to be like that, is the first step towards seeking “light” again. Sometimes it can be just a tiny thing that lets in a glimmer; for me, it was watching a dragonfly. I wish you well 👍

Patrick, Thanks again for bringing this message to light. As an advocate for American Indians and Veterans... mental health and suicide prevention are a crossroads of concern for me. We don't think anything about saying "I'm going to the gym" or the doctor or dentist...(to take care of the physical body. We don't think anything about saying "I went to church" to take care of the spiritual body. When will we reach a day when we can openly accept and expect people to "go to a therapist" as part of day to day / week to week / season to season mental health?

I just had to put my mom in hospice because of a brain tumor that was just found earlier this week and I knew for years there was a problem but couldn't get her to help herself. I also lost a good friend in a single car accident. The crazy part about that is that if it hadn't been for my mom's stuff going on I would have been with my friend. And yes, I'm that kid that comes over and tells you everything...always have been. I think it's my way of making sure other people understand that bad things happen but you can keep going even though you feel bent, maybe broken. And yes, I'm taking care of myself and getting the support that I need. I love your videos. Keep going!
