This was one of the most amazing game series of all time. This kind of gaming is the kind of stuff kids don't get anymore. All the violence in games now and graphics sometimes just don't matter when you have such an innovative series like this.
True. Idk how old you are, but I'm 21 and for most of my life, games were always violent and full of demons, and dark stuff, and all you do is killing. It sucks. Sometimes it's really hard to find interesting games like this one. Lately there have been some improvement thankfully but I mean... Fortnite is what people enjoy so, these games always get more attention.
I remember buying Wing Commander 2 and purchasing a sound blaster card after the purchase and having my mind blown at actually hearing characters speak that I knew so well already. It was amazing.
Oh yeah me too. It was crazy going from pc speaker sound to real music and voices, it felt like entirely new games! 10 years later I reply to your comment, lol. Hopefully you’re still kicking around
I love the wing commander series. It was what inspired me as a young 5 year old to become an aerospace engineer today. It was also the first video game franchise I ever collected for. I have all the games in one form or the other. Awesome music as well!
Back in the day, I used a "cheap charlie" CH Flight Stick, a basic Sound Blaster sound card and had a blast! If a pilot died on my mission, I "went at it again," taking care to NOT fight the same way. The Game AI would "remember" what you had done in the previous mission, so the "do it again" approach would get you killed toot suite. As I recall, only two pilots couldn't be saved by replay, but "c'est la guerre." I think I bought another CH Flight Stick because the original couldn't be recalibrated. "Thrust Master"? That "switches everywhere" premium deluxe flight stick was for Rich Kids.;) I returned to Sierra Online RPGs or LucasArts flight/space combat simulators and passed on Wing Commander 3.
God I remember playing the Wing Commander series as a kid. Watching Pilots die or half failing missions I thought was a part of the game and not just a variant of the story. I do miss this era of games where the Pc had such gorgeous 2D graphics. The music was pretty incredible too once we got the SoundBlaster16 card. Hope you’re doing well and will upload more videos in 2023 and on! I have to go through some of these older videos I’ve never watched It sucks you Didn’t keep on making these review type videos on RUclips. I know these are 12 years old but they are very well made and written for those days. Maybe just a little too ahead of your time I remember going to see the Wing Commander film in theaters with my dad. May he rest in peace, passed last August 2022
I don't know if any of you know but Chris Roberts Is making another space adventure epic currently in the making called "Star Citizen' It is ENTIRELY fan backed (now at 40 million in donations) Its an entire first person game, you can buy ships already and sit in them (hanger module) go check out RSI or Robers Space Industries!
They have a youtube channel called 'wingmans hanger' to show the fans and backers whats going on behind the scenes and how the games progressing, their soon to release the dog fighting module next month (April) sometime
For those stumbling into this, check out the Wing Commander Saga - it's a fully finished fan made Wing Commander game of amazingly good quality! I just stumbled on it recently and wow.
Great Retrospective! I played all the WingCommander games to death :-D But I must say that WC3 Is my favorite, I was totally blown away by that great cinematic gaming experience :-)
Certainly one of the best series of all time. Ultima is still probably my favourite. Both from the same company with some of their best games out in the same time period.
I played the original on sega cd but the system wasn't fast enough to keep up with the game. Any area that had asteroid fields were almost impossible to navigate let alone fight other ships in. The super nes version played better but the story lines got changed. I certainly do remember having to take aspirin before playing because the refresh rate was so bad in either version it caused headaches, quite literally.
Nice review. I recently got Wing Commander I & II from gog.com for $5.99 along with some other games. I remember playing Wing Commander I and not having so much trouble as I am having now. Guess my arcade skills as not as good as they used to be. It might also explain why some missions are giving me so much trouble by the fact that they have alternate endings.
i had the part with mark hamilton acting as blair..nice game!! my pc at that time : Pentium one 133mhz xD the harddisk was 1024 mb = 1gb ^^ oh and part one on my old amiga 2000.. WC live long!!
There's an AMIGA version of II which you could probably play via a CD-R on a CD32, but no legitimate console ports as the SNES one never saw the light of day, you can get III and IV on PS1 and Prophecy on the GAMEBOY ADVANCE however.
Yep 100000% agree. I only recently got into space sims a few years ago (although I grew up with joysticks, just not space sims). I started with FreeSpace and was hooked. Then I played the X-wing/Tie Fighter games and loved them!! Wing Commander though....ughhh I feel like FreeSpace and Tie Fighter/X-Wing are timeless. But while I think the concept of Wing Commander is amazing. The gameplay is extremely dated. I felt like I'm playing a game from the 80s and not the early 90s. X-wing/Tie Fighter was significantly more playable than Wing Commander feels. But maybe I'm being too judgemental.

I so wish they made a modern version of Wing commander.
I played this on my snes when I was younger, one of my favorite games, makes you feel like your there!
Great review - thank you for taking the time! Enjoyed it while downloading Wing Commander: Saga. Brings back memories of 1990!

Excellent over-view. I really enjoyed it. You have a new subscriber!
I've played this game so many times I almost never end up on the losing path except for failing Kurasawa system, mission 2... *shakes fist*.
GOG also have WC 4: price of freedom available now as well and it's the enhanced DVD version too.
For those stumbling into this, check out the Wing Commander Saga - it's a fully finished fan made Wing Commander game of amazingly good quality! I just stumbled on it recently and wow.
And that`s why I bought Wing Commander 1 through 4 on gog.

I couldn't read as a kid while playing this, nice to see how much i missed out on.
I used to remember not being able to play this because my PC was always below specs!
started playing the first game after seeing your review, it is as great as you told! (bought it on gog.com)

great review! will be playing those games again someday
great review : ) i never played wc 1 or 2 but i did play 3 and 4 and there amazing games and i deff plan to play the first one sometime
The old games are very hard and I could not make WC1 run properly in dosbox. Wing commander 2 runs very well though.
Best game series of all time, hands down
i remember used to play wc3 on 3do awesome game

I very enjoyed your review, but I wish you had actually done 3 and 4 properly in two movies.
@pinballfortress You can also buy the first 2 games on GOG(.)com on which they are compatible with XP, Vista, and 7.
@imperialpod
I also have Standoff and I can recommend it. But, like Unknown Enemy, you need WC Secret Ops to play them.
i had the part with mark hamilton acting as blair..nice game!! my pc at that time : Pentium one 133mhz xD the harddisk was 1024 mb = 1gb ^^
Excellent music. Some of the most beautiful. The Fat Man, no?
@pinballfortress Not sure if this was available 2 years ago, but you can buy WC 1-3 on GOG now.

epic review!... took me back to the early 90s... still don't get what chris Roberts was smoking for that movie..
ok i will play these!
Fantastic review, thanx! Make more!
Great Review. Loved these games when I was younger! Shame they won't bring this series back in any meaningful way. Stupid EA!
Are there any console ports of wing commander 2?
Noah Hall Nope, a Super Nintendo port was in progress, and apparently pretty far along, but it was cancelled.
There's an AMIGA version of II which you could probably play via a CD-R on a CD32, but no legitimate console ports as the SNES one never saw the light of day, you can get III and IV on PS1 and Prophecy on the GAMEBOY ADVANCE however.
watched 8 seconds. its already better than the movie.
good job!
Star Citizen .
sweet!
You doubt my abilities to lose 6 missions in a row?
Get from gog....com . Runs on new PCs as well and have improvements too , like HD cutscenes .
If anyone wants to buy wing commander it s on good old game and its works on your PC
Or try gog.com, they have got whole serie.
wcnews dot c*m has fan made patches plus an active fourm... they will get your copies running in short order
Yeah.
Sorry, but this felt more as a nostalgia trip than an actual review.
@pinballfortress And Privateer.
That actually did make a movie after the wing commander series.
Best series is Thief.
It's not as good as TIE Fighter or FreeSpace 2 though.
i prefer the more arcadey gameplay of wc.
