The author Cornwall who wrote The Last Kingdom is a descendant of Uhtred and that is why he tells his story. Absolutely one of the best shows I've ever seen. Truly captivating from start to finish.
@@CALISUPERSPORT He writes about it in his books. The afterward, I think. He took A LOT of liberties. It is historical fiction after all. But there are something like 13 books in the series and they are AMAZING. But as good as the books are, the Audible version is the absolute best.
Yes. I dont watch ficticious shows but i know some of it is based on real events.i want to learn truth i watched all seasons in 4 days. I finished the show about 6 hours ago and cannot stop thinking about it.
Don't forget, it is author Bernard Cornwall who brought Uhtred to life in his 'The Last Kingdom' series of twelve books - weaving fact and fiction together in a memorable fashion.
I've read the entire series and watched the TV version. Both stories have their high points: do I like the Uhtred on TV or in the written series better? I'm going with the books. In them, Uhtred was literate, and I could see better *why* he shifted alliances so. In the books, he *does* get Bebbanburg back, that episode is awesome. But we must remember that Mr. Cornwell's works -- like others of his standout series -- are historical fiction, gloriously done. Being fiction, many historical truths get changed and/or used to develop the story. This case is no different.

I think there are three main reasons for this: 1 would be brevity; no matter how hard you try to be comprehensive and/or accurate, if you are covering an event of any length, you're going to have to cut something and thus choices are going to have to be made. For example, take a mini-series like North and South. Great video, very well explained and I look forward to watching more. One thing that perplexis me with the show is how Uhtred seems to be able to get up to Northumbria and back to Wessex so fast, then to London, and all around.
Good question. However, when Harald Godwinson's brother Tostig Godwinson allied himself with the Viking king Harald Hardrada in order to take England, the English forced marched to Stamford Bridge some 120 miles away. There, they defeated the Vikings once and for all. Then, news reached Harold that the Normans had landed at Hastings, so he force marched his depleted army all the way back and then fought the Normans. We all know that the English lost but it was a very close run thing, with the Normans being almost beaten. Consider what must have taken place. To force march an army with all their weapons and supplies necessary, then fight and win a major battle against a determined enemy, then force march that depleted army back to the South of England again to fight another fresher army and almost beat them. That says an awful lot about the English warrior abilities, stamina and courage.

The surname de Neville comes up after 1066 in Northumbria and holds the seat of Babbenbourgh. The anglosaxon married a norman and kept his arms but took her surname because it was more fortuitous to have a norman surname at that time. Proof of being of the line of Uhtrid is not documented, but it's possible. Something to investigate if you like genealogy and history.

Loved The Last Kingdom. And even though this is the real, historical Uhtred, who's to say the character portrayed on the show isn't his ancestor or something? Remember how each episode starts: "I am Uhtred, son of Uhtred."
Uhtred in the series is based on Uhtred from Bernard Cornwells books, Cornwell is a descendant of Uhtred the Bold but his stories are fiction set in real history.
Its historical fact that the leaders of Bamburgh, up until around 933 (when the Vikings destroyed the castle) where named all named Uhtred, so "Uhtred son of Uhtred" would be both a continuous title for the eldest son of the ruler of the fortress as well as their name. The author Bernard Cornwell is a descendant of the ruling family of Bamburgh so is descendant of Uhtred the bold who would have been a grandson to the Uhtred from his stories.
Ed Ram I just finished the last kingdom about 3 weeks ago, my wife came in and was like why does he talk like that? And I didn’t really realize it until season three about halfway in that he was ‘TALKIING like HE was REALLY cocky and SOUNDED like a DOUCHE bag ‘ and it really threw me off from the character. Glad someone else noticed. I assume it was from when he was with Ragnar for a time and then went back to Saxon
The actor and the producers of The Last Kingdom agreed that Uhtred's accent would sound like it does because it is a a mixture of Saxon and Dane. Or how they want it to be.
Cnut is actually refered to as Cnut the Great just like Alfred the Great. The only 2 English kings to ever be called the great. The term C#nt would come from elsewhere I truly believe
Wow! If the series follows any of this history then Cnut is going to be a major player in the future. Also the house of Bebbanburg will unite all of Northumbria? This is amazing stuff.
Read the books because the real Uhtred of Bebbanburg, who killed Ubba by the sea (the book one not the ACTUAL one) would never say dumb shit like that. Fate is inexorable.
The books are better. I listened the first couple of books on Audible and the narrator was brilliant. When he stopped narrating I started reading. It reminds me loads of Sharpe and the warlord chronicles . I loved them
I got a hold of the first book of this series and looked forward to reading a good historical yarn about my neck of the woods - however I just couldn't get past the 'Saxon' references - the Northumbrians and Mercians were not Saxons, they were Angles. Totally spoilt it for me.

@@wasp6594 if only they had rested the history of are Country might have been completely different.
Just finished "The Last Kingdom" on Netflix, looking for a good recommendation to watch similar to the Last Kingdom. DESTINY IS ALL - Uhtred of Bebbanburg
Probably a given but the show "Vikings" is a good series.
Outlaw king
Outlaw king is very good be sure to watch braveheart before if you haven't already
@@jackman-vx9hh but braveheart barely has anything to do with historical accuracy
@@roylandmaines299 oh well still a great movie
The Last Kingdom is a fantastic series !!
I didn’t know that there was historical significance to The Last Kingdom. Made me love the series even more. I’m over here looking like a crackhead waiting for season 5!
I got my family and extended family watching The Last Kingdom. I find after binging a couple episodes, we all start talking like the characters. Fun quarantining!
I am pleased to see the comment section filled with fellow Arselings!
That's so cool to hear
You can't help but become invested in the Last Kingdom's characters. Vikings was great but I didn't feel the same connection.
Great video, I remember when I read the books, Cornwell mentioned his inspiration for the character being real, but this was way more informative
Apparently, is a descendant of "Uhtred the Bold."
I’ve watched the Vikings series twice over , waiting for the new episodes , a friend has mentioned the last kingdom at first episode I was like na this won’t be as good no way , um season 2 episode 5 in two days I’m glued and wow the last kingdom is a glorious series I fell in love !!!!
Me too, took me to season,2 then binged watched until 4 LOVE it. Can't wait for Vikings to come back either.
Its crazy to think all of these kingdoms and wars were fought in a land that is smaller than my own state of Florida
Raemnant just means they didn’t have to travel all that far for a good fight lol
Same with the Seminoles, etc etc, they just didn't write anything down.
Lands probably felt much bigger then too 👍with no cars, planes, trains etc
But England is 1.7 times bigger than Florida bro...
@@tsunamitube3351 England has a land area of 50,346 square miles. Florida is 65,755 square miles. You could have easily googled that yourself
I firstly want to thank you! You and few other channels gave me motivation to try making this kind of content myself! I love history and I love watching your videos, but sometimes you post things I am not interested in, so I make them my own! I love your content Your animations are smooth, information is not very complex, but it contains everything needed. Keep up the good work!
I’m tajik with persian root ethnicity, now living in U.K. 🇬🇧 and I can say the last kingdom is such awesome and best historical show of England. I have also learned a lot about utred and England 🏴.
Cant wait for season 5 of this. Im a big fan of the last kingdom.season 4 is only 1day for me to watch all the episode. Make it fast for season 5.. netflix!!! 🥰🤣
So the real Uthred had a whole different story and never fought battle with Alfred the Great?
Traveler - correct.
"It will not be written that Alfred did stand on Uhtred's shoulders. Many times." -Alfred
This was the Uthred Son of those Uthred that yet to come.. The real Uthred was forgotten and his stories will never be known to anyone.
- Well that was at least if you think the show was real.. lol 🤣
The show is historical fiction
Basically set within 100 years earlier. I just hope our Uhtred the Godless doesn’t meet the same fate as the real one
The Last Kingdom is like the love child of Vikings and GoT.
Justin Hubbard GOT and Vikings is nothing compared to the Greatness of The Last Kingdom. GOT and Vikings are overrated while the Last Kingdom is very Underrated.

Uhtred is actually my 29th Great Grandfather! Never knew there was video history on him. This is so fascinating!!
Roxyie Curone are you kidding
Nope. He lived from 0971-1016 It's awesome! His father, Waltheof of Bamburgh is my 30 great grandfather. He lived 0965-0994.
Just out of interest do you have an ancestral lineage to show? I come from Oughtred/Ughtred line. We can only go back to 1300s with research.
@@lukeouthwaite9999 That's a LONG lineage, but yes, I have.

I have just finished book #4 in The Last Kingdom series - love Bernard Cornwell's humour and attention to detail. xx
For 3 days I watched the three seasons of The last kingdom. I am now excited for their 4th season
Uhtred The Bold indeed
So I’ve never seen this video pop up until I only just started watching “The Last Kingdom” on Netflix. Uggh, creepy.
I made it half way through season 4 before it poped up in my feed...... still creepy!
Outstanding video. I'll have to watch it several more times to remember everything.
I used to work near Canewdon! hearing the names like Sweyne (which is a school in Rayleigh, Essex alongside FitzWimarc named after the son of Sweyne, which is another school (and I dare say not related to Swayne mentioned here) really puts some local history into perspective.
Father Pyrlig was great in every scene of the 4th Season! Alfred was sorely missed though. More Father Pyrlig please.
i wish father pyrlig could hump Lady Aethelflad or even Hild
True but I miss Beoccaaaa
The surname de Neville comes up after 1066 in Northumbria and holds the seat of Babbenbourgh. The anglosaxon married a norman and kept his arms but took her surname because it was more fortuitous to have a norman surname at that time. Proof of being of the line of Uhtrid is not documented, but it's possible. Something to investigate if you like genealogy and history.
Just found this channel and I'm so glad to see more Anglo Saxon history vids on RUclips thanks for that! Also I was wondering, could you post links in the description to the artwork you use? It's good stuff.
Thanks for the support mate. Right now this channel is still very new and I'm just testing out whether people are interested in this sort of thing and the style I'm going for.. If it all kicks off at some point I'll start doing it all professionally haha at the moment I'm just doing it because I love it. :)
Uhtred makes me forget how old I am. Omg. During his last baptism I thought my heart would stop!
LMAO! "Even his scars are handsome"
I’m only new to your channel but loving it. Keep the videos coming.
Last Kingdom what a great series! I hope it would continue more
why do people argue which is better between vikings and lost kingdom, they are both amazing shows, so im gonna enjoy both and not worry bout the bullshit.
You keep using a drawing of Sir James Douglas for the Scottish kings, James Douglas lived 3 centuries later, you can tell by the heraldry( something that did not exist when uthred lived)
Last kingdom is awesome and the timeline correlation between it and Vikings has been fun to watch
I remember reading about this fellow when I read a book about Queen Emma and the Vikings. Thanks for reminding me about these people. I think I need to read that book again.
I really enjoyed this, an excellent and well informed underpinning for my much LOVED viewing of The Last Kingdom❤ I can hardly wait for the next season🙂 How'd THEY know?!!👍
I used to live in Beamfleote. Never knew about the battle between the Saxons and the Danes in 894.
The picture of King Malcolm at the start is really Sir James Douglas from the first war of independence several centuries later
Hey this is some pretty awesome stuff!
If you can fix the volume, you got yourself another sub =)
Thanks. This video is from well over a year ago. Audio is better on the newer vids.

Out of curiosity, why are you using an image of Sir James “the Black” Douglas for Malcom II? There’s a 3 century difference between the two.

Loved The Last Kingdom. And even though this is the real, historical Uhtred, who's to say the character portrayed on the show isn't his ancestor or something? Remember how each episode starts: "I am Uhtred, son of Uhtred."
Anyone know an Uhtred?
No because in the show Alfred the Great is currently ruling which gives us a timeline. 871-886
Question, why kind of accent is the actor trying to do in seasons 2 and 3? It sounds different from that in season 1.
@@sethnewman1755 I showed a clip to a friend and she wondered if he is doing a Scottish accent. I just thought why would he, he is from Northumbria.
He is German, so i think this is his personnal accent wich has evoluated.
I don't know
The actor and the producers of The Last Kingdom agreed that Uhtred's accent would sound like it does because it is a a mixture of Saxon and Dane. Or how they want it to be.
Amazing pieces of history being told.
Thank you.
That [bloodfeud] escalated quickly.
Imagine being named Cnut....
Great video! Love a good history lesson
I can't believe Cnut, betrayed Uhtred like that. I wonder if people started calling him anagrams of his name after that.
Maybe that's where the famous insult originated xD
Cnut is actually refered to as Cnut the Great just like Alfred the Great. The only 2 English kings to ever be called the great. The term C#nt would come from elsewhere I truly believe
Spoiler alert??
Can’t stop watching this series dammm so good
Wow! If the series follows any of this history then Cnut is going to be a major player in the future. Also the house of Bebbanburg will unite all of Northumbria? This is amazing stuff.
Did you watch season/series 4?
“Destiny is all...” - Untred, Son of Untred
Read the books because the real Uhtred of Bebbanburg, who killed Ubba by the sea (the book one not the ACTUAL one) would never say dumb shit like that.
Fate is inexorable.
@@K1TTY_K1T It was something very common to believe "dumb shit" like that in those times.
"I am Uthred, son of Uthred born as a saxton but raised as a dane"
Uhtred’s descendants did not fuck around. They straight up genocided that guy’s entire line.
4:55 What is Cnut? I'm pretty sure it's not spelt that way
2:57 you seem to have Monkwearmouth north east of Jarrow and seemingly on the Tyne rather than the Wear. Jarrow is north west of Monkwearmouth
cavey davey maybe confused with Jesmond 🤷🏻♀️
SEASON 5 WE’RE READY FOR YOU. DESTINY IS ALL💫
If they kill off Uhtred on the show, I'm gonna be pissed
Netflix has a creepy agenda... they've already made Uhtred an emotional bitch with a jewel on his sword. Not even close to the Cornwell's story!
That won’t happen
Who’s watching this after season five?
The books are better. I listened the first couple of books on Audible and the narrator was brilliant. When he stopped narrating I started reading. It reminds me loads of Sharpe and the warlord chronicles . I loved them
Interesting. And a good show. We always watch all of the episodes in just a couple of days.
I got a hold of the first book of this series and looked forward to reading a good historical yarn about my neck of the woods - however I just couldn't get past the 'Saxon' references - the Northumbrians and Mercians were not Saxons, they were Angles.
Totally spoilt it for me.
The real Uhtred was here.
The Last Kingdom Season 4 is getting ready to drop!
If you are interested read Bernard Cornwall. He does at least 9 books about this. They are absolutely awesome. Happy Reading. From a 71 year old lady!
I will watch The Last Kingdom after reading such glowing reviews of the series. Thanks.
