The fact that Arseface sees the light in some way at the end of the story makes this a very twisted Bible story in some ways. Like a modern Job (through the messed up lens of Ennis).

Hellblazer #5 is up there as well. Jamie Delano doesn’t pull any punches.

One of those terms fed to the NYT reporter by the Sub Pop employee was of course “harsh realm,” later read in the NYT by James Hudnall and used as the title for a comic book later adapted for the tv screen by one Mr. Chris Carter.

22:25 what started as research for the comic I’m making, since I’m disabled and can’t perform my music anymore, has turned into poignancy and depth that I could’ve never imagined going in to discovery of this channel a mere month or so ago…I don’t keep up with news typically so apologies for previous comments that may have not landed in that correct tone for the sensitivities of certain situations that I was blissfully unaware of at the onset of the week. Prayers for Pittsburg and all points in between.

He's a far more sympathetic character, even with his faults and mistakes leading up to his disfigurement. Always was part of whenever I did a complete reread of Preacher.

We were all lucky to find a water-worn copy of 'Club' Magazine in the woods. We'd split it up like treasure. But no. No adult book stores in the burbs. We did have the Spice channel though- either a black box or watching/listening through the squiggles.

When Fabry (and McCrea) were through the Pittsburgh area in 97, I got my copy signed and a sketch of Arseface from him, too. (McCrea did Etrigan for me)

I had zero clue about this series...this looks like the most "human" and horrifying thing Ennis has ever written. Not even a Preacher fan, but this looks fantastic 👌

Off topic question, are there any suggestions for learning wrestling terms? You guys use them on occasion and it would be fun reading about them. Maybe even in graphic novel format.

Always stoked when you guys cover more Preacher! While Preacher definitely crossed more all-around boundaries of offensiveness, with the primary focus being the criticism of organized religion, The Boys (which was published by DC for the first 7 issues) was Ennis pushing superheroes into the most reprehensible state possible, so where they cancelled the series. So although most the series was published by Dynamite, the Boys has to be 2nd runner up for extreme angst and filth! And I agree with the other person who commented on Section Eight…it’s almost unfathomable that DC printed that without the Vertigo stamp.

I ran into James Vance, the inspiration for Arseface, at a McDonalds right after I moved to Sparks, Nevada. It was probably about a year before he passed away. I would have been about 13 or 14 so the prime age to have adults using his story as a cautionary tale about “satanic music”. Several years later I was working at a comic book store when Arseface showed up in Preacher I knew right away who it had to be based on. A few years after that, I was working as a graphic designer and had to do some work with the lawyer who took Judas Priest to court. He basically made his name with that case and even had print outs of news articles plastered all over the front window of his office. I didn’t like working with him and was thankful it was a small job.

The UFO thing: I think that whole culture seems like a particularly American thing from an outsider’s point of view so probably very deliberate on Ennis’ part.

Offensive DC comics, how about Section Eight by garth Ennis and Hitman with characters like Dog Welder who likes to kill dogs. and Bueno Excellente, a super hero who only says Bueno Excellente and likes to rape people. even raped Lobo.

The visuals- the color, the expressiveness- it’s still in homage to Preacher but there is a bit more expressiveness in respect to the characters of this story. It’s probably something too far read into but one of the most striking things about Preacher is the story telling is very reliant on the characters’ expressions… So, that’s what I see…
