- The Cretaceous period saw the breaking up of the northern and southern landmasses. Flying dinosaurs like Tapejara would master the air and the new coast lines of prehistoric Earth. The largest flying dinosaur Ornithocheirus prepares for a long flight to breeding grounds.
Broadcast in 1999, Walking with Dinosaurs set out to create the most accurate portrayal of prehistoric animals ever seen on the screen. Combining fact and informed speculation with cutting-edge computer graphics and animatronics effects, the series took two years to make.

The CGI is really impressive for something made in 1999, not to mention the animatronics and real life filming locations.
Indeed, seeing this air live would’ve been awesome
Atmosphere was different then I suppose what scientists opinion on the situation 😂
*"For this giant of the sky, it will be the last great flight he ever makes"* That makes my heartbrake every time. Poor thing
It's already impressive, I could do without adding made up drama.
The entire premise of WWD is portraying the prehistoric creatures from each era in their peak but near their demise, so what you called "made up drama" is just a vessel to tell the story, and it's completely necessary cause otherwise this series would've been as iconic as it is
Don't be sad for them. They dominated the earth for 180+ million years. We've only been here for 300,000 years (i.e. homo sapiens).
At 0:42, that build up is astounding. Then when the music kicks in, you really feel the awesome power and size of the Ornithocheirus... such brilliant film-making.
That my friend...
Is British filmmaking in its finest😊👍
A P I know don’t you think sometimes old shows like this are better than new ones
Funnily enough its the Peter Jacksons King kong theme.
The version from the game nonetheless.
@@warlerker how? I can't find the music you're referencing, can you please give a link to the track you mentioned?
@@limey461 maybe im mistaken, but it does sound familiar, ill look for it.
I found this episode so sad as a child
I could never watch it with out crying as a child
***** Why what happens? No I don't really want to know! :c
***** ye its really sad man. Have you watched the ballad of big al? That got me right in the feels too.
Nah i only watched the original series + the behind the scenes episode (eventhough as a child i didnt understand half the stuff they talked about behind the scenes). The 2 saddest episodes are this one and the final episode :(
***** you should watch the ballad of big al, one of my favourites
I wish they would make an updated version of Walking With Dinosaurs and even the other series that followed it. If they would, I hope they use the practical and CGI together again like they did in these.
...voiced over by David Attenborough.
I agree. Even in 360p these animations are impressive. Imagine what they could achieve today, perhaps even with 360 VR.
Bonehead Trevor and bring back Kenneth Branagh. As soon as you hear his voice you know it’s him. I grew up on his voice through this series, since I was seven.
Bonehead Trevor Agreed. They could do other animals like Spinosaurus, Microraptor, Argentinosaurus, Minmi, Baryonyx, Sauroposidan, Acrocanthosaurus.
Bonehead Trevor য়য়য়য়য়য়য়য়য়য়::য়:য়য়য়:

@@WeWantYouToStay It really is, I still remember watching this as a kid and that's why I'm here.
Ptear jerking. Tearanodons.
The animation and animatronics/puppetry here are nothing short of superlative. They really make these animals look like living breathing individuals. If only more palaeo-docs held themselves to such high standards.
They consulted a lot of paleontologists to be accurate.
Powerranger6342 they should remake this with all the new discoveries in paleontology.
And keep up the high standards of animation.
The series have inaccurate information and portrayals
Animatronic nya keliatan ga hidup.
this is probably the best quality Dinosaur/prehistoric documentary in my opinion. Most of the other documentary's look more cartoonish, and not as good. but this one looks very realistic compared to the others, love the details on the tapejara and Ornithocheirus's eyes and face. I hope in the future they air this again and make more episodes, the did a very good job and this is by far my favorite series of dino/prehistoric documentary. I missed this so much as a kid. I remember feeling sorry for the poor Ornithocheirus
Jacknava2001 Nothing wrong, I love it to, but I dislike the model they used for the Tyrannosaurus Rex, the tail is too short and the face looks dumb, but I still love the series.
Yes. Too bad nowaday is outdated. Also, it has a lot of innaccurances
The CGI hasn't aged well tbh
It’s trash
DeLEET Titan It wasn’t even CGI. They are puppets
When I was little I was the biggest dinosaur nerd. Ever since I can remeber I had loved them, asking for toys, clothes, movies, burthdat pinatas, anything dinosaur related I wanted. Apparently when I was 2 I could name tons off the top of my head and peole were amazed. 14 years later im here and about ready to start watching a dino movie marathon again!
I was the same haha, but ive forgot most of them now, apart from the household names of course.
Michael916Velasquez yeah with 16 you are soooo old...
Michael916Velasquez those aren't even dinosaurs though

This was my favorite episode because I love pterosaurs so much X3

Yeah totaly, the cretaceos period was truly a good time to live.
Wow
0:45 I love the Walking With Dinosaurs soundtrack in general, but this one takes the cake.
Guys, Quetzalcoatlus was not the biggest pterosaur, it was the TALLEST pterosaur. Hatzegopteryx was heavier and had a larger wingspan. also the "Ornithocheirus" in the episode is actually the Treopegnathus, the largest pterosaur outside of the azarchid group. (where Quetz and Hatzeg are taxonomically placed.)
THANK YOU! FINALLY SOMEONE KNOWS THE ACTUAL BIGGEST
besides me.... (god i'm a nerd)
There's a new bigger one discovered nicknamed "Dracula". There hasn't been much research on it yet and thus it hasn't got a scientific name yet.
@@SonKunSama how can smth be bigger than Quetzalcoatlus and still fly ?
kapliger I don't know a whole lot about aviation physics, but I guess if they've found a bigger one it might have been possible. Don't forget Hatzygopteryx was also heavier than Quetzalqoatlus.
This series is still the best even today
This episode looked so real. One of the best episodes in the whole "Walking with series" , or maybe even the best one of all.
props to the cameramen to go back in time for dinosaur footage
This was the thing that impressed me the most when I was a kid... it still manages to kinda make me emotional.
Me too. Ornithocheirus is all a inspiration even to the poems. ♥️📜🖋️

@@deathsonggaming let’s not forget that quetzalcoatlus lived about 70 million years after the pterosaurs in the video lived
But quetzal lived in the Upper Cretaceous but not ornitho
40 years old, spent its entire life roaming the globe in search of food but now forced to find a mate. Wow, that cut pretty deep.
And they say that dragons never existed....
I dont recall scientists finding bones of a dragon
You must be fun at parties...
Lyzone No, but there ARE real life sea serpents called Mosasaurs.
Blood Dragons.
Pterosaurs are about as draconic as you can get--large, flying reptiles with carnivorous diets and weird head ornaments.
Fun fact: Some of these past flying pre-kt extinction era flying animals had their eyes positioned in a way where they had a blind spot gap (at a certain size I am not sure how big) where they could not see directly in front of them like us. They had no binocular vision. They flew tilting their head to the side. Not all of them were like this. I would later find out there are a lot of bird species with the same problem. Parrots, parakeets, and etc. Eagles, falcons, owls, and etc. are a exception. I will guarantee you it was similar to back then too.
I know what you are thinking. That's impossible. Look it up. There are birds like this and so are some extinct flying animals. It's mind blowing to discover this. You would think binocular vision is a must have ability for flying but nope. It really depends on the niche you are filling and where you are in the food chain.
I never tought about this but its really intressting! Thanks for this!
Prey have their eyes on the side to see more. Predators have both eyes facing forward, focusing on one point for depth perception.
It supports the view that dedicated aerial predators were nonexistent or rare in the Mesozoic era. Afaik there has been no fossil evidence of any Mesozoic pterosaur or avialian that hunted like modern birds of prey so far.
What's amazing about this show is how it remains the most realistic portrayal of dinosaurs, even 20 years on. If you look at 1:20 it's almost authentic because back in the 90s they knew models would look way better than any CGI. That's still the case now generally, but filmmakers have got lazier :/
So are these models sort of puppets they made and moved by hand ?
Rowbance Yeah literally that, my sister has the behind the scenes book and some of them are heads on sticks, so they use them for close ups then revert to CGI for the full bodies
Tim Senna it's missing the dino feathers
Erynn S but it's not a dino
My VHS tape also had episode about making series - it was said they used puppets and CGI at the same time to make it more realistic when they moved it. When something was running, intead of using puppet, which wouldn't look as great and instead of using CGI altogether since ( insert reason here - all new films), they used a cloth, colored as dinosaurs in need and it was pinned on car. Then they used CGI to construct a dinosaurs but because the cloth was moving and it was real, so did CGI looked way more real.
4:06 The sound of a dieing messed up bird and lizard hybrid.
I'm sure glad he knew all of that.
Is this the one where, near the end of his life, the old chap is squawking on a rock for a mate and no one is listening? Yeah, totally relate to that.
The cameraman was so brave..
It could easily kill him
Even if there is some inaccuracies now in this episode, its still the best. The tonality of it amazing, its so sad, its like a real shakespearian tragedy, showing nature in all it beauty as well as death. It gives me the same feelings as the Ballad of Big Al. Benjamin Bartlett absolutely makes its incredible.
Just noticed in the description, trust the BBC to bring such shame upon such a beautiful depiction of prehistoric life. Despite the fact that in the video itself it clearly call them pterosaurs and flying reptiles, they still call them flying dinosaurs... what the actual hell are the people writing this playing at. Still love this video tho
I remember this as a kid, how times change..
this was one of the saddest stories in walking with dinosaurs :(
this happens in the present day world all the time with people and animals
Didn’t even realise until now I’ve been to those exact cliffs
I want the music at 0:46 to play when I walk into a room lol
I remember watching this with my dad as a kid and crying
The english narrator might be good, but it's the german one who's voice really fits to the dramatic music and scenery!
With the voice of Otto Clemens every documentary becomes a joy.
Quetzalcoatlus: How so cute this little Child~ ♥
Quetzalqoatlus didn't even exist back then, only late Cretaceous
Yeah king of the sky, Eagle can just rip your skin wings and then dies from a fall damage
Ornithocheirus 3 tons and 12 metres is a pterosaur in Vietnam🇻🇳About 4570 million years ago after the dinosaurs🦕

The music in this episode was so perfect!
I love the Tapejara's design, even if it isn't very accurate ^_^
***** Yeah, I know. Tupanadactylus Navigans I believe. It's nowhere near as impressive as its cousin Tupanadactylus Imperator though, what with T. Imperator having the biggest head crest of all known pterosaurs (or at least, biggest in relation to body size). Pterosaurs are awesome ^_^
***** t...t...tapejara... isn't called tapejara anymore ;( nuuuuuu my favourite pterosaur...

It's not a dino. These were flying reptiles.
pterosaurs, close relatives of dinosaurs but not. They are both archosaurs tho, that what i go with when i group them together. But that aside, same but eh thats nature

Incredible to think these long-lost creatures made this same journey dozens of millions of years before the portuguese.

@@KhanMann66 Netflix has it.
(For everyone saying that Quetzalcoatlus is larger) We actually only have partial remains of Ornithocheirus and it may turn out to be bigger then what we estimate (Current estimates say 27-30 feet)
Quetzalcoatlus had a 36 foot wingspan, so it still currently wins (unless you mean the smaller Hell Creek species of Quetalcoatlus). It doesn't matter much though, seeing as Hatzegopteryx may have been bigger than both of them (current estimate is 36 foot wingspan, but I've seen 39 given as an estimate too).
Yeah but quetzalcoatlus is taller and the wingspan is bigger too 11 meters
I'm just going to leave these here for everyone on this thread: markwitton-com.blogspot.com/2016/03/the-life-and-times-of-flying-reptiles.html and markwitton-com.blogspot.com/2016/05/quetzalcoatlus-media-concept-vs-science.html
Dang the wrong info at the time this first aired, thought this was that large. Have always wanted to fly on the back of pterosaur, a notion reinforced by Dinotopia, thought this particular one could be the one to ride.
The Tapejara look cool
Remake walking with dinosaurs and do an episode on the largest pterodactyl ever.
0:25 Tapejara
0:44 Tropeognathus
This ornithocheirus turned out to be a tropeognathus, and the real ornithocheirus is actually smaller than this. Same thing for the tapejaras.
To all the people going on about quetzalcoatlus, The estimate for ornithocheirus as 12m is actually smaller than the 13m for quetzal in episode 6 of this very series. Ornitho (in this series) was the biggest flying animal of its time, not ever, which is what the documentary implies.
Oh why did the BBC have to go to FOX and make that awful movie, rather than go to Impossible Pictures, this show was so great!
Yess,.
the dinosaurs in that movie were really realistic and accurate and everything and looked brilliant, they just ruined it with the voice over. Why do that? March of the penguins doesnt have voice over, so why dinosaurs? After all dinosaur roars are universal language
LordOfThe Flightless they thought it’d connect to the kiddies. Spoiler alert: it didn’t!
I hate how they went primary kid friendly on it just so parents can agree to take their young children to see it which i believe is another big reason why its legacy is ruined, including that awful voice acting unlile dinosaur which had very good dialogue. Heck i'd rather watch jurassic fight club because I'd rather watch it if it was rated T or R, even though it's a terrible documentary
i have the dvd of this
I got the VC
I have a blue ray.
Pretty sure some of these scenes are made with puppets or maybe animatronics they look so cool if they are!
Yes - in this series they used many animatronics

WWD had a real soul to it that seems missing from subsequent paleo documentaries.
Is it safe to say these creatures are the real legitimate "Dragons".
It should be flying with dinosaurs lol
This brings back memories!
Im from Brazil, here have a lot of pterodactyl museum
Why didn’t ark put this guy in instead of making the tapejara bigger than it actually was
this episode makes me cry
So this came out 2 years after the 2nd jurassic park been released and 2 year before 2001 movie. It explains a lot! I love to see those mixing of CGI with pratical effects back in the 90's. The team putted a lot of effort to make this documentary.
"in HQ" uploads in 360p... okay
Ornithocheirus looks like tropeognathus like if you agree!
It's a species of one that's why
I need the rest of this video. I've seen this is a child before and it made me kind of sad, but now I want to see it again.
1:05 rodan: hold my lava beer
You can tell this is old, the narrator says about the Ornithocheirus being the king of the skies, but the Quetzalcoatlus is the biggest flying creature ever discovered, this must be before Quetzal was discovered :/
He mightve meant it was the king of this area.
VTACT MilSim no, cause then he would have said, "the king of this area"
Actually Quetzalcoatlus was discovered in 1971: 28 years before this series was made. Also Quetzocoatlus most likely didn't evolve untill after Ornithocheirus died out so they probably just meant biggest at the time.
+Daniel Kauffman Quetzals are shown in the last episode, I think. This is in the early Cretaceous, long before Quetzals showed up.
nope... the biggest one now is Hatzegopteryx
Am I the only one who's annoyed by the repeated calls of the Tapejaras?
Best series ever
I did not know Europe and America existed 127 mil years ago. Whatever, great episode and great journey.
In fact quetzalcoatlus is the biggest, I know this is a long time ago, but quetzalcoatlus is discover in 1975. So this documentary is not true
Not at all, but the reason it is amazing is because of the animation and puppetry

The Quetz also has a rival, the Hatzegopteryx, we have so few samples of both though.
some random gamer dude he meant the largest of the current time period which is the early Cretaceous
The Biggest pterosaur is Quetzalcoatlus
Gussi i no it's not,it's the second biggest look it up
just beaten by Hatzegopteryx which is larger
+Jow Richie And not by a lot, I might add. Plus, it's (probably) shorter.
maybe, but it have bigger wingspan and probably heavier than quetzalcoatlus
