I think that it would have been a lot easier and probably faster to just go inside and go up the stairs, however not nearly as dramatic, but the hard way is not usually the best
I think he didn't do it that way cause he didn't know the entire structure of the building and it would have taken him longer. Also the building look like it was abandoned will being renovated.
