In this day and age, this feels more like a play than a movie

Had the young lady who was playing Alice somehow magically still been alive today, she would be 139 years old.
The growing and shrinker is so impressive for its time. A lot of the effects are very impressive, and I love the rabbit costumes. I wonder what parts are incomplete/missing from this film?
The rabbit costumes are my favorite effects in the film as well. Imagine what Rick Baker could do in a new version of this film, one that prioritized practical creature effects over cgi.
@@dodapictures2141 Yeah, f*** cgi. They made a sh!tload of card costumes for this!
The film is nitrate, which decomposes over time and is highly flammable, so if the footage was too damaged, it was removed.
All the kids in the card outfits looking at the camera like it's an alien device and likely was the first time they had seen a movie camera before. Sad that all of those lives have been lived and they are long dead now.
Just to ruin your day, Its likely many died in WW1

None of WWs had happened.
Armenians were not genocided.
Russia was still an empire.
Jack London, Mark Twain, Tolstoy and Chekhov were still alive.
Human beings were more original, even though they were living less.
There were still living people in the US who has been slaves

There are short films dated back to the 1890s, you can find many here on youtube.
Oh yeah, moving pictures to be specific haha has been around longer then people even realize, dating back to the late 1800s primarily 1880s and 1890s but full length films came around more in the 1910s and 1920s Era, fun fact and no joke, early versions of color and even 3d existed back then but much different then what we have now but the ideas were there since the dawn of cinema, blows my mind still!

The fact that we see black and white but the actors were enjoying w bright sunny normal day

And to think my maternal grandmother was just one year old when this film was made. She died in 1984.

De plus, les ficelles scénaristiques sont directement données, on sait qu’Alice rêve dès le premier intertitre). Amputé de trois minutes, le récit paraît encore plus décousu qu’il ne devait l'être originellement, il est nébuleux comme un rêve. La texture granuleuse de la pellicule dégradée rend le tout encore plus étrange pour le regard du XXIe siècle, tel le vestige d’un cauchemar dont on se réveille encore transpirant.
Bien que loin de la maestria d’un Méliès, le film possède son lot de trouvailles esthétiques, les costumes, par exemple, rendent parfaitement hommage aux personnages de Lewis Caroll tout en ayant un aspect bricolé à la fois effrayant et plein de charme. Le Lapin Blanc n’a jamais été aussi monstrueux, les soldats en carte jamais été si bon enfant. Certains effets, comme l’apparition et la disparition du Chat de Cheshire (qui se contente d’être un simple chat apparaissant et disparaissant en fondu) ou le rétrécissement sont plus difficiles à prendre au sérieux mais ont le mérite d’avoir été osés. Les couleurs qui teintent ce noir et blanc magnifient le récit et apporte une véritable plus-value romantique.
Il est difficile d’en parler comme étant un film réussi ou raté, le cinéma n’étant encore qu’à ses balbutiements, reste néanmoins que ce Alice in Wonderland est une archive surprenante qui ne laisse pas indifférent, encore aujourd’hui.

How did you get a good quality version of this film? The only surviving copy is the BFI's print, and it's 480p on youtube.
This is obviously also a copy of the BFI's print. They released it in 1080p on the UK Blu-ray of the 1988 Jan Švankmajer Alice as an extra.

Even being in 12min, I feel it as a superior adaptation if compared to the 1915 one in terms of rhythm and direction.

There's certain film damages that can't be cleaned up, particularly in old films, some are just beyond repair
