- This goes out to all my fellow musicians and music fans who have been perpetually inspired by ZZ Top. I had a ZZ Top poster handing on my wall wen I was a kid, and I’ve been jamming with their music ever since I got my first electric guitar. Since Jesus just gained a badass bassist, here’s an acoustic rendition of “Jesus Just Left Chicago.” R. I. P. Dusty Hill.
Ahh the memories. Back then Dusty set the tone and the speed of the songs. He was a master at making a large impression. That was the bands motivation, how to sound authentic using limited knowledge. In doing so our peoples music while written on a scale unknown to europeans until around 1880, the wider range of freedom in notation and expression was the goal. In our Native Country this was a go to for the people of Mali. Some of the chords todays musicans use are as old as the origional pyrimids in the Kush region. Two structures used in this song are almost as old. Now, Billy and the band had no idea about this until a chance meeting with Taj Mahal who at the time was working on a project on the subject. He taught Billy that story on how he had just learned it himself. That was magical to me listening to them talk. Dusty was all in and realized that just may be why that song caught on the way it did. The chords are designed to move the soul and the tempo reveals the mood. I bet if you slow this down about 1 1/4 step you can improvise and express with three times the feeling. Remembering this style was created to tell a story and the notes you choose are the words. Yeah, I am a bit of an ass but I am old and to be honest I watched this because of your ha, the one in the profile. That is a Dope ass hat. Ok im out Respect my brotha keep on playing
