This is what happens when you have people in power worried about the money they receive.Instead of using the money for the right reasons.Howard has been all over the news with getting donations. This is why our black young students would rather go to pwi institutions.
What you see is a staged interview with five maintenance workers in one dorm. Once the camera goes away the usual maintenance support can be as low as one worker per two buildings. Enjoy the show!
Yes sir! My niece is a student here and she said that was staged because after the interview was over she and other students saw no more cleaning crew’s or contractors.
This is the same BS my wife put up with at Howard going all the back to 1986. How in the world are you going to outsource all your housing, this is poor leadership at best...
The sad part is this dysfunction against students and living conditions have been going on for years! Howard must now and going forward must do better! No excuses. God bless the students for standing their ground.
The administration could careless if the students left. That's also a problem. I want Administrators working at Howard that care about Howard University like our students, families and community do.. .
Harvard, Princeton, Yale, and the like have huge private and alumni endorsements. So do the big state schools. I live in New Orleans and I’m a teacher. During a summer program, we brought the students on a college tour to LSU. The campus’s facilities were wonderful. When you look up the the statistics and compare the money LSU and Southern take in the numbers are staggering. I went to Loyola in New Orleans and LSU I stayed on campus and had no troubles other than student error or care. We called the DA and RA and things were handled immediately. We have to do better. If you graduate from a school, you should actively participate , at least financially. We put up with this because we don’t collectively reach back. There are lots of black professionals here who Never give a dime to these schools accept to come to homecoming. If we care so much, why is that so?
Well said. Your comment should be pinned. This horrid situation is a reflection of how much "our people" actually don't give a damn. If we don't care about each other how can we ever expect anyone else to care.. utter humiliation for HBCUs.
HBCU graduates don't give back because A. Most of em are so bogged down with student loan debt that they can't afford to. B. Most black college graduates end up working in fields completely different then what their degree is in. Education being the key to financial security may have been true 40 years ago but in modern times higher education just makes you a slave to debt. As there is no guarantee that you'll even be able to find work in your degree field.I personally have met 3 engineers that drive Uber.
@@jeromejenkins1733 I hear you. I’m in that situation but didn’t attend an HBCU. Lot’s of us in the recent years 20 and on are is debt but our parents and grandparents don’t donate who can. A lot of the attitude is “I got mine, you get yours.” It’s the bootstrap mentality. There is a private all boys Catholic school here (St. Augustine) with a great reputation of graduating leaders of the city yet they were struggling. Some of the alumni finally started a program for former students to donate 1 dollar a year coinciding with their graduation year. That helped. We have to understand anything can help.
I’m so proud of these young leaders! I’m praying that the administrative leaders address and facilitate resolution of the concerns of all of the students. All I can say is, it looks like new administrative leadership is needed. The students should not have to deal with deplorable living conditions. Why are they being threatened?! Really? 😡

I wanted to go to Howard in 2008. The tour was great. But, when it came to the dorms, we were not allowed to go in....we asked why and they ignored the question...I thought it was too sketchy
Uncle Roland it’s been bad since 2013 when my niece graduated. It was not good the bathrooms weren’t wht the students should’ve been using shame on HOWARD UNIVERSITY FOR NOT DOING BETTER FOR THESE KIDS!!!
My daughter attends Hampton University and they don’t have these issues. Their campus has been renovated with some brand new dorm halls added. I don’t think people should categorize all HBCUs as having an issue.
Thanks Martin Rowland for bringing both sides. So the whole truth lies in the middle. But without a conversation between the two sides happening, then movement forward won't occur. The Administration should listen and hear, and try to find a way to address real problems. Money is needed, then do a Go Fund Me. But doing nothing is not an Option.
This reminds me of the terrible conditions about 18 years ago just six miles up Georgia AVE. In the Army barracks at the old Walter Reed Army hospital where numerous wounded warriors were living. Come on Howard University as tuition is not cheap at your school!!! Get it together as those kids are our FUTURE LEADERS!!!!
This is a public health crisis. Sleeping in rooms with bugs and rats. Absolutely unacceptable conditions to live in, study in and having to pay tuition for.

@Meia. Right, but I don't believe it is just 5%. Unfortunately this crap happens often. Not just on campuses, but new home construction. I found mold in my NEW home. My husband, me, and a couple others protested. Our homes were fixed. I applaud the students for protesting.

The problems I see: third party managers of the residence halls, red tape process for complaint has too many hands involved and mold doesn’t happen overnight! My niece was considering attending this school for the arts program, now, it’s a hard NO for me. I really encouraged her to apply here too…Howard…do better!
The clean-up crew looks staged. You meant to tell me they're doing this on EVERY floor? Or just the one you led them to for your interview? As soon as you come off the elevator everyone starts moving like they're doing work.
AND DID YOU SEE THE GUY THAT ACTUALLY TOLD THEM WHEN 2 START WALKING...WTH DIDNT ROLAND PEEP THE B.S ..OLE GIRL FLUNG SO MUCH B.S AT HIM ITS RIDICULOUS...SMH...
If the students parents and grandparents have been going there with the same problems why would they recommend their kids to go there? 🤷🏿♂️
Because this is supposed to be "The Mecca" so they say. It's supposed to be the best of "US"
And the students are!!
We're BLACK and PROUD
YOUNG & GIFTED
Support OUR HBCU'S.
@@nemonobody9063 Yes, Nemo, so many HBCU students are "young, gifted and Black." And we as a collective should support them. If not us, who...if not now, when? And since forever and a day HBCUs have been underfunded, so at some point students and others need to vigorously work for change, use the courts to rectify inequities where possible, and learn to successfully lobby alumni, businesses, foundations and philanthropy to accomplish goals. Advocates for the five public Maryland HBCUs, for instance, successfully sued the state to correct various issues, so over the next decade it must pay them a total of $500,000,000.00 to. Help spread the word. (And you are SOMEBODY, otherwise I would not have responded to your on-time comment.)
Thank you, Kevin that information✊
Ignorance is blissful
I have relatives that attended Howard, and I just pray that our HBCU situations can all be fixed and saved. We need a place to call ours. And I wish that our financially endowed alumni would support and pour into our schools so our future students are able to attend a healthy and thriving school,
My daughter went there on a visit and she said "oooh no ma"am " ...
Smart!!
Of course she not gonna say we taking these student money and treating them like shit. Howard need to do better
A lot of these HBCU’S are nasty my baby sister attended Tennessee State back in 1984 for about 3 days and left because of the roaches and filth. My stepdaughter is now attending FAMU and says if she sees one more roach she’s coming home.
PREACH!! But that's not acceptable. These are OUR HBCU'S we must take care of them. If we have administration that doesn't feel the same way then we need new administration
I was lucky at NCA&T that the new suites dorm I stayed in were nice. I had my own room and only shared a bathroom with 1 person. I heard some of the older dorms on campus were pretty bad. Hopefully they fixed it since I graduated in ‘13.
This particular administration isn't that much older than me. They haven't been there fifty years. But you do bring up a good point. I still think we need to clean house. This administration definitely doesn't care about our students, But transparency accountability and a detailed plan for the new set of administrators
Thank you
America is full of 'em!
This is what happens when you have people in power worried about the money they receive.Instead of using the money for the right reasons.Howard has been all over the news with getting donations. This is why our black young students would rather go to pwi institutions.
Sad but true. Imagine going on a campus tour and a rodent scampers over your foot while seeing the dorms. We've got to do better.
I went to Morehouse. Loved it. Wouldn’t change a thing. Where did you go?
These students are on POINT! Go Bisons!
EXACTLY....AND WHY ARE THEY OUT SOURCING...THAT MAKES NO SENSE....SMH
what howard failed to tell them the way they create activists is making the students rise up against their very institution smh
Facts
This is the same BS my wife put up with at Howard going all the back to 1986. How in the world are you going to outsource all your housing, this is poor leadership at best...
The sad part is this dysfunction against students and living conditions have been going on for years! Howard must now and going forward must do better! No excuses. God bless the students for standing their ground.
Definitely check the process! Have a student include you in the complaint process and track how it is handled real time
Who cares what this woman has to say? The students wouldn't be outside in tents if the dorms were habitable.
Makes No Sense… They Pocketing The Money Instead Of Paying For Repairs.. Smh
This is what will make these students transfer to HWCU's.
The administration could careless if the students left. That's also a problem. I want Administrators working at Howard that care about Howard University like our students, families and community do.. .
Yes it does! Subpar living conditions are not acceptable and no one has to tolerate this just to say you attend an HBCU
What are HWCU?
@@souljaragg :D historical white college university
@@ckpenn1233 no such thing as a hwcu. Lol
I lived in Tubman Quad, Frazier Hall Room 303. It was pretty bad in 1970, I can only imagine it’s condition now.
HBCU graduates don't give back because
@@qarreeayantumekonnen1205 thanks
I comment rarely but try to be mindful
I’m so proud of these young leaders! I’m praying that the administrative leaders address and facilitate resolution of the concerns of all of the students. All I can say is, it looks like new administrative leadership is needed. The students should not have to deal with deplorable living conditions. Why are they being threatened?! Really? 😡
Finally Roland speaking on something more then voting
Stop the bullshyt. Roland covered everything that concerns black folks.
Amen. All you have to do is text it. He's LISTENING and Reading all texts.
Does his food go straight from his mouth to his stomach when he eat? He has no neck, IJS
You seem to have a lot to say about what hes covering, but what are you doing to suggest to them directly that he covers stories that are more of an interest to you?? Bitching about a situation versus changing a situational what separate boys from men..
@@lvplackbussy9831 Is that all you could contribute to this conversation? Do better.
Come on Howard were is the funding you cant play around with mold
HU didn’t clean one thing since we were gone for 3 semesters….. didn’t even sweep or mop the hall ways
Wow, the peoples in the projects, lives better than this. I would rather live outside, then live with mices and roaches, why not asked them to pay tuitions. I attended major universitys and community college, never seems conditions like this. Howard you got to do better for our future scholars, this is disgusting.
That’s my daughters dorm. The elevator probably wasn’t working either. 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️
Always slow to fix the problems but quick to kick you out if you can't pay tuition college ain't nothing but a government system they quick to take but slow to give and give many excuses and always put on a care act when they get exposed
Tuskegee University students protest almost every 4 years because of the same lack luster, sub par administration (Inadequate housing, inadequate safety, no accountability for funding development or staff stealing from the university) issues
Where is ALL THE MONEY GOING??? Students need to ask for the school to audited and find out WHY MONEY IS MOT ALLOCATED FOR CLEAN AND DECENT HOUSING THAT THEY ARE PAYING FOR!!!
The contractors should be held accountable too. No rails, this should be at least a safety violation.
Honestly this happens at hbcu's quite often. I went to nccu in the early mid 2000s at we had a very similar situation to this. I understand the students anger and hopefully this get resolved in a timely manner.
Unacceptable, and I'm not surprised at all.
We need your support. This is OUR HBCU. Call Howard University Administration demand better!
@@nemonobody9063 The students and alumni already have the power to make change. Don't worry about allies.
Continue to hold the faculty accountable for the price of that tuition.
There is always two sides to every story , keep holding them accountable , this is wrong the way the students are being treating 🙁
The WORST camera guy ever. What’s the damn clicking.. so distracted by this horrible filming. Sorry these babies are going through this, so sad.
The clicking doesn't bother me. But the camera man needs to keep up with the subjects that he is filming.
Should be LAWS for housing. Pest control & mold. Should be federal laws for this bullsh×t
More students should protest. Allen University is investing in making the campus look beautiful on the outside yet mold and peeling walls in buildings, classrooms that are too hot (in spring) to teach with windows that can’t be opened. I’m so proud that these students use their voices.
Almost 50k a yr to deal with that ? 🤔 where is the funding going too?
Probably in this shiesty lady’s pocketbook!!! 😡😡😡😡
Legacy!? I'm not sending my child to college to be homeless. Make it make sense.
I hope this comes to a positive solution 4 all & I definitely recognize the west Indian accent..either Trini or grenada
What are they doing with all the money they are getting?! This is horrible!!!
Shame on Howard for treating their own like this.... SMH
....SHE IS SUCH THE PUBLIC RELATIONS, IT WAS NOT THE STUDENTS RESPONSIBILITY TO RENOVATE & CLEAN THE BUILDINGS, DORMS ETC BEFORE RETURNING TO SCHOOL. THAT CLEANING CREW AINT DOING SHIIIIIIITTTTTT. WHO IS THE HOUSING DIRECTOR & WHAT'S THERE JOB RESPONSIBILITY. LESSS THAN 2% WAS TOOOO MUCH, ESPECIALLY IF THEY ISSUED THE ROOMS TO STUDENTS.
Wow, such poor conditions, that's disgusting 😕 What are they doing about roaches and/or rodents? Mold shouldn't be an issue at all! Students wouldn't protest for no reason!
Exactly, especially when Howard University Administration will punish them severely. Call Student Affairs and demand for the students protesting to be heard and not penalized
Unacceptable one of the most expensive schools
What the hell , everyone wants to steal 🙄what happen to all the money allocated to HBCU. 🙄lock them up 😠embezzlement of funds , crooks ,crooks , crooks 🙏😷
50 grand plus housing .What a sad tale.
This is deplorable these kids deserve better. They're paying to attend this school, is somebody stealing the money for the sanitation budget 🤔🧐
I am so embarrassed and disappointed and I have no relationship to Howard other than I’ve always thought of this school as the crème de crème of not just HBCUs but all Universities. This is unacceptable, These people are literally destroying Legacy. Sad. My first semester of college was also at an HBCU, I immediately transferred after the end of that semester. My housing experience wasn’t this horrible, but the leadership and administration of both universities shared the lack of interest in the needs of students. So the instructors and professors are complaining about lack of pay and the student are living in unacceptable living conditions; WHAT THE H3LL are they doing with all that money if the aren’t spending it on students and staff? Who the H3LL running that place UMAR ?
Corvais should not be the check and balance. They already have a hug law suit pending for the same thing. Why are you still using them?
Bullshit! These student ain’t lying! They have no reason to lie about this situation!
Fifteen years ago my friend applied to an MA program at Howard. The admissions office “lost” his entire application.
WOW!!!! 😡
@@DeeDee-vn7pe It’s a very disorganized school. Not surprised at all by the current situation in the dorms.
This is interesting. We had a both problem at my dorm. There was no dorm in my room but the mold in the air vents affected all the students. They are full of it.
There was reports about HBCU funding being cut. Then heard that it wasn't. Then there are scenarios such as this where the funding being cut seem more the reality.
Hbcus outsourced the maintenance and that the problem. Those companies aren’t even black owned. House keeping make minimum wage.
These students are so articulate
She said less than 5% had extreme mole like any percentage is okay🙄
@Meia. Right, but I don't believe it is just 5%. Unfortunately this crap happens often. Not just on campuses, but new home construction. I found mold in my NEW home. My husband, me, and a couple others protested. Our homes were fixed. I applaud the students for protesting.
This is so wrong in so many ways . Howard I'm disappointed .You should do better care of providing good clean housing for students. This is shameful
Some articulate guys I tell ya. In college I spent much of my time nursing hangovers than this it seems
He should had a protestor take him to the areas where they had the problems. Looks like these areas did not have any problems which is not the case.
Clearly Xavier was the better choice for me. Graduated 3times from there.

...this is the same Admin that caused the FINANCIAL AID Debacle for Shaw University...she didn't last long there either....hmmmm🤔
SHE’S THE PROBLEM!!!!! 😡
I don't know who the young man recording is but, Mr. Roland please hire better production crew.
I think I heard her say what caused all this when she said “outsourced”
Great coverage. The camera man at the end was being very loud with selfish stick . Extremely distracting.
This is a historic problem at too too many HBCU's 💯💯💯Where is the lie...👀👀👀Historic gross financial mismanagement on top of historic unequal funding since 1890, HBCUs founding.💯
Unequal before and since, the 2nd Morrill Act that was established in 1890 to address discriminatory admissions practices in the formerly Confederate states, granting land-grant HBCUs the same legal status as the 1862 institutions, but unequal funding.
that's why I’m glad i attended Georgia Tech, hcbu's are just a fad.cirriculum is garbage, food is garbage, housing is garbage yet they look down on you if you are black and didn't attend a hbcu.thanks but no thanks to your corrupt college system. roland knows this but refuses to address the real issue, adminitrators taking the money and lining their own pockets, smdh, mlk would be crying if he saw the conditions of hbcu's and their accountability and their refusal to answer the real problems. Just thankful i didn't attend one these poor schools which are nothing more that advanced high schools
I'm a Howard grad so this is hard for me to watch. I stayed in Drew Hall freshman year and it's an all male dorm. It wasn't luxurious in the least bit but I survived it and with all the friends I made it's bearable. But Howard has to do better by it's students. Many of our parents are not rich and spending their savings to put us their kids through college.
Hey black folks! CLEAN THE DAMN SCHOOL !!! GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER Howard University !!! and allow the students to study.
Fun fact this wouldn’t never happen at a white university
They won't meet with us, all they do is send a representative. Isn't that called meeting with you.
Exactly why I made my daughter go to USC in Los Angeles. I would never, ever, ever allow her to attend HBCU.
How long did she have to rehearse this BS!! With all of the celebrity alumni that attended this institution, this should not be. The facility issues should be number 1. McKenzie Scott gave 40 million dollars to Howard ; were did that money go?
This is ridiculous. The whole situation is unacceptable and I don't know how any school can think this is ok. Our kids and our parents deserve so much more. These are not babies that you can just ignore...they are young adults not accepting mediocrity. Get it together..
Howard has always had terrible dorms. When I visited the school in 1988 they were bad then. That is on of the reason I chose Temple U.
