Restoring a Piece of History - Random Hands

- At last! here is a restoration video after a long time just on public demand.
This is the most rusty cleaver I have ever restored, this antique butcher cleaver was send to us from Netherland by one of our supporter Stuw, his instagram @Stuwhoutje. He found it with the help of a metal detector. I did not make any big changes to this cleaver. I did not smoothen those big holes from corrosion and at the end I like that antique look of the cleaver.
Restoration:
First of all I removed thick layers of rust with gentle hammering then I choosen Electrolysis for removing deeper rust because it is a safer and non damaging way of removing rust. After many hours of electrolysis I simply do a sandblasting for a good looking surface.
Now time to Reshape it using belt sander and files While filing the surface I felt that it is still good tempered and ready to make the bevel I used a wet surface grinder to not destroy its temper. And after sanding now we have a razor sharp blade.
Next I tried a new way to give it a royal look and securing it from further corrosion.
Brass brushing: Simply we heat up cleaver with a gas torch and brush it with a brass wire brush using an angle grinder.
Now time to make its handle. I used brass, resin and wood to make its handle. After blackening and smoothening the wood and a gloss finish it looked good.
For its protection I made a leather cover. I used a wax hardened black leather
to make this fancy cover. And now it is ready to beautify the walls.

I was surprised how much metal was actually left. Looked like the whole thing would just crumble apart.

It gained the mass of the oxygen as it rusted, so it makes sense that it can look like it's losing a lot but still have plenty of material left to work with.

only hundreds of years of rust can create a finish like that, a truly one-of-a-kind piece.
@@liam4686 You can't really do that to steel. What's much easier is to just rust it quicker. If you want to reach this finish at scale you can afford a few weeks in a greatly oxidising environment to get around the same level of rusting.
or let your knife sitt in salt water for a month straight so get a similar effect
@@liam4686 it's more than just divots in the material. The whole piece came warped because of how much material was lost to rust. You might be able to replicate some features but it wouldn't look natural

I love watching restoration videos but Zyada khushi is baat ki hoi k hamary mulk mein b aisa content banaty lots of love and respect for you ♥️♥️
the result was beautiful, the only thing I would change is the round handle, I don't think any knife should have a handle like this because when cutting it can rotate the blade and cause a serious injury.
Putting that aside, I would love to have that cleaver, it´s just gorgeous
"I changed the wood due to color issue" proceeds to painting it black anyway
Lol you deserve more likes, Your point is absolutely correct 😂
Yeah, I think it was more likely he messed up because of a burl
Maybe the color wasn't sticking to the wood properly
Nobody gunna mention that he made a black schlong out of the wood?
Yeah as soon as he started making the handle that's when it went downhill. Not sure why he chose that design and colour...
I wouldn’t be surprised if this guy can make a machete from a chicken wing at this point
Use chicken nuggets instead
Don’t give him ideas. Lol
honestly me too
The creamy rust water sounds like a good dip for the chicken wing.
uhh that's kiwami Japan's job
Just super. The recovery is fire.
Thank you, it was nice and interesting to watch. Good luck!
I’m so happy that you kept the pitting. It keeps the history and I always thought it looked so cool. This turned out amazing.
It looks nice but not really hygienic to use, as food particles will accumulate in all the pitting. It would probably need a very light coat of epoxy to fill in all the pitting, imo.

Man, this is seriously so incredible. I am amazed by all of your techniques. I actually didn’t think that the gold would turn out at first, but you made it a masterpiece composition. Serious props.
Beautiful Restoration!! 👍👍
Observation: I was curious about the date of this artifact until they said the spine is still hard. If it were medieval, the edge would likely be hardened carbon steel with the rest of the mass of the blade being made of a less valuable form of steel or iron. So it's probably not as old as it looks, but was instead not well preserved. Honestly, anything more than 50 years old in good shape is a rarity.

When this first started I thought “ bro just let that thing die” but after seeing how amazing that turned out I’m glad I stayed until the end
