They were by no means wealthy and for those of you who keep saying that you should watch the documentary and become educated.Actually she worked and paid for her own boat at the age of ten while the rest of us were playing video games or hanging at the mall. What an inspiring and beautiful young women.
***** She actually said she "doesn't like" sponsors. She still had sponsors. Watch the documentary about her, she's clearly sponsored. That's not what gave her the willpower to circumnavigate the globe, though.
I have watched the doc. And it's clear that while she had some sponsorship, she had *very little*. Think about it -- if she were strongly sponsored, why would she have left on this voyage with only her dad watching? How many stops did she make without any fanfare? It wasn't until she completed 'the record' that anyone seemed to notice. So use your brains and figure it out...
"Actually she worked and paid for her own boat at the age of ten" Hate to burst your bubble, but what kind of work can a 10yo in Europe (work protection laws) do where she would earn enough to buy anything more expensive than a 1:200 model-kit for a boat!? Doesn't make sense, there must have been another money source. I do not mean to bash what she did, I admire what she did. But pretending she did it on her own, earning the boat, is nonsense.
The list of people i find inspiring isn't very large, but my goodness does she rank highly on it. Laura Dekker, if you see this, know that you single handedly motivated me to finally pursue my dreams!
Laura is an amazing young lady. You know when you have it in you to accomplish what everyone else says you can't. I hope other young people will be inspired by her courage, intelligence, and fortitude. An excellent role model for the 21st century.
+weetikhet12344 Not to mention she had to take part time jobs (cleaned shops/brought newspapers around), sailed everyday of summer around Holland, and learned how to navigate MANUALLY. Yes, they have money to buy a small boat and a wrecked one. They had money for food and travels for her stops. But she looked for sponsors. She asked for help, from her dad, from other people. It was her own initiative that paved the way to achieve her dreams. :/ Sheesh, people and their justification for their lack of determination to pursue theirs.... smh
+weetikhet12344 Even if she was from a wealthy family, "spoiled" seems like a very poor description. If she woke up tired, she couldn't go back to bed and have someone else steer the ship for her. If there was something in need of repair, noone was gonna do it for her. If she woke up and freaked out about how she's hundreds of miles from civilization, there was noone to talk to. That ship wasn't gonna go where she needed it to unless she made it go there. "Spoiled" refers to someone who is given what they need. This girl is self-reliant to the max, which is the opposite of that.
If that's not inspiring, bloody hell I don't know what is!!!!!!!!!! She honestly sparked something special inside of me! I myself totally find refuge in nature and solitude, and in EXTREME challenges, testing my absolute limitlessnes, and trying to achieve the impossible, that is what keeps me sane and my spirit alive!!! so to have finally found someone I can relate and call a hero is actually liberating for me! I get bored and disheartened by how much people limit themselves and lack courage and confidence in themselves, qualities I value, yet I see shine so vividly through this gorgeous young woman! You go girl! Would love to read her book one day :)
i just love Laura, she is so genuine and unique. Her documentary made me cry with joy given how she tackled her dream with such confidence and bravery. A wonderful human, i just want to hug her. :D
I'm watching 'Maidentrip' and am in awe of this girl. How I have never knew of her until browsing 'Netflix' tonight I'll never know. What an inspiring human being.
I 28 and i am a sailor. A navigator. My longest sailing yet is 49 days. And i was was on a 200m vessel with 23 other sailors. 45 days on a 40m sailing boat a girl of age 16 all alone? God this is an amazing girl.
Well done! Bravo! So young and so wise! It`s inspiring to know there are persons like this young lady in the world. Laura keep travelling, learning and transmitting your message of what are the real important things in life, and don`t change your mind! Wish you the best! Congrats to her parents for her education too. They put her wings.
Very inspirational!! I've only just saw the movie yesterday night on Netflix but it was so real and down to earth, it's amazing! Congratulations to you and please stay as natural as you are! I know that you had to be very strong, even stronger as 'Guppy'! :)
I watched the documentary before watching this video... I really enjoyed the documentary, and of course, this video. The disagreement you had with the producer in the documentary was just part of the journey. Anyone having achieved anything in life knows there are ups and downs. Given the challenges you faced, points of frustration are understandable and with practice we all improve in dealing with frustration. Bravo! I think you're a very inspirational person. Way to go Laura! I look forward to seeing what else you do in your life.
congratulations , i remember buying ah newspaper in the caribbean couple years ago and reading the article about this young girl from st. martin who just completed this around the world voyage, amazing, your ah real life super hero
Seems obvious from the negative comments that the authors did not watch the documentary or learn the whole story. Focused and inspiring young lady who has achieved a considerable accomplishment.
I admire your spirit, you really get it! :) i love sailing and have also been working on merchandise vessels around the world, but that is most work for me, but you sail around the world all by yourself :) you are inspiering ..
Dear Laura Dekker! I do wonder what you are doing these days, my Dear! What did your life brought to you and when is the TV Channel TED doing a wonderfull update to your biography for all of us! Wishing you so well!
This is a great story. After watching her movie, Maiden Trip, I'm thinking she was very fortunate regarding weather issues. But still this is a great accomplishment.
I thought the same thing; she seemed to only have bad weather issues a few times, which is truly blessed. No major rogue waves, etc. Yet, for someone so deeply connected to nature, there was never any talk of spirituality or religion-which I find odd. Maybe it got edited out, don't know. But anywho, read her book first, loaned to me fr a fellow sailor & ocean lover. It was a great story; so was pleased to find/watch her docum. on Netflix. Was great. What's up w all the downers & negativity-all this stuff commented on her? Guess people just wanna vent. Amazing story fr so young...aloha ;-)
Amber Thompson I saw somewhere that she wasn't that happy with the movie. She felt that it didn't show her actually working the boat that much. I would have liked to have seen more of that myself. But it was interesting to see her ashore in various places. In the end the editor of the movie has time constraints and must make some decisions. I'm amazed at the malcontents that belittle this adventure. Clearly, her family was not that well off. They live on boats, not in homes. The boat she sailed was found in a used boat yard and was in very bad shape. They got it cheap. Her father, though a boat builder, did not have his own business. He worked for others. He did a good job of getting that boat ready for the trip. I would have been afraid to trust my daughter's life to such a craft. I 'd want it to be state of the art. Even so, the boat was still in use after the difficult trip. A 38-foot ketch is hardly a yacht. Sleep probably involved a foam rubber mattress on wooden slats. Living on a sailboat is anything but luxurious.
Amber Thompson "there was never any talk of spirituality or religion-which I find odd" There was plenty of spirituality, depending on how you define that word. As you said, she had a deep connection with nature. She cried tears of joy as dolphins swam with her boat. She was able to learn who she was without the barriers of society or her well meaning friends and family; This connection with herself is no small feat considering that many of us still have doubts and insecurities regarding our purpose.-- If by religion, you are referring to a structured belief system, I don't think that would go over too well for such an open-minded free spirit, such as this amazing young woman.
I'd love to get my Son in her Teen Sailing School. I heard she and her now Husband Started. Does anyone have information in it? I remember her on the news way back. Her story is amazing. If ever in New York. I'd love to shake her hand. Brave young Woman!!

In the meantime saw the documentary, and yes, if you could stay with no attachment...well, I guess that's it. No hope, no fear...the highest achievement.
Hi Liam, I did all sorts of odd jobs, cleaning in shops, washing boats, performing acts on my unicycle in town and generally helping out anywhere I could on the shipyard where we lived. I have to admit that as a child not having to pay tax or living costs obviously helps to save up something, but most importantly was probably my drive to do the work and therefore not spending any of it on candy, toys or other things that wouldn't bring me closer to my goal.
Nicole Ball That's odd. Then you must have missed the part about Laura being born on a yacht in New Zealand. Her Dad was a boat builder, which can be lucrative. The family moved to the Netherlands and lived both on yachts and in a nice home. They had enough money to pay lawyers to prevent Laura from being apprehended by Dutch Child Welfare when she planned her solo trip. Laura had money to fly to Sint Maarten in the Caribbean for a week before her trip. The yacht Laura sailed around the world in was filled with a lot of expensive equipment. Her parents had enough money to fly to meet her at several locations around the world. Sorry, but to most people in the world this is not considered "struggling".
