NEWS: Cardinals Send Jordan Walker Down To Triple-A - Smart Move Or Panic Mode?

  • Brenden Schaeffer discusses Wednesday morning's St. Louis Cardinals roster moves as the Cardinals have announced that they have optioned OF Jordan Walker and LHP Zack Thompson to Triple-A Memphis following the recent struggles by both players.
Is it a panic move to send Walker down again or is it the only way the Cardinals can eventually get the most out of him at the big-league level? The lack of consistent playing time can certainly be a factor in a decision like this one.

Its absolutely the right call. Its not that his timing is off, or he's "in his own head" too much, its that his swing looks fundamentally off. The Dodgers announcer tore into it during their first series, exposing all its flaws. Walker has a great future but needs to hone his skills away from the main roster.

He's 21 years old. Let him mature and develop at AAA. Nothing wrong with him spending the entire year there. Leaving Jordan in what appears to be an increasingly toxic environment (did you see the press conference?) in St. Louis is not what a 21 year old needs to develop his talent...

If Mo and Ollie left tomorrow, re tooling this team at this point just isn’t possible. The problem goes a lot deeper than just Mo and Ollie. There are two ways to improve any team, sign free agents or by trade. At this point, signing free agents (with the exception of Trevor Bauer, which isn’t happening) is not possible. That leaves trades, and thanks to the expanded postseason format, most teams believe they still have a chance, so they won’t want to part with good players.

This is, unfortunately, the right move. Development hinges on playing time, but our margin for error is non-existent right now. We need dependable bats that are producing, and giving Walker time to work out the issues he's experiencing at the plate makes a ton of sense.

  • @Jens-we3vg

No team should be glued to any one player. Roster moves are needed to evolve a team and find the next guy. Keep trying guys, you never know who will catch fire given a chance. Walker will figure it out and be back.
All our prospects going someplace else and becoming all stars tells me the cardinals infrastructure is not a well oiled machine anymore.
Every aspect of this organization starting from the top down needs to be looked at under a microscope.
Fans know the way the organization has been run for the last 7-8 years is not the cardinal way.

Jordan Walker has been clueless at the plate this year. We can't have anymore of that when we've seen what he can do. To keep him up any longer is counter-productive. He'll be back once he learns how to push past doses of failure--which he had probably never experienced until last year.
It had to be done. He's had no confidence and he's just going to have to go down for a bit and work on some things.

Good move. They actually have a way better hitting coach down in AAA. They shouldn't have never sent him down last year to begin with. He's off mentally and looks confused at the plate. Putting too much pressure on himself. I know he's a pro but he's 21. Sometimes you can have the body of a pro, but not mind of one.

The problem is do we have a coach in AAA that can help him? The coaching in the big league is atrocious, but that lies solely on Cheapo Dewitt and Mo who put them there. Over the years the ego of Mo has driven away most of the good baseball minds that once populated this organization.

Jordan Walker is playing out of position, and he isn't an impact MLB player. I agree that his swing is out of whack. We traded so many good outfielders and we are left with Carlson, who has never really produced, and Walker, who isn't even a true MLB OF, and Nootbar, who is probably a .265 hitter. It's sad to see what has happened, and how quickly it happened.
All of this is squarely on the management in the front office and their construction of this team. Unless there is something we don't know, MO is the one to answer for it, and the way he answers for it is to either be let go or step down.
