Bikini Kill - Rebel Girl

- This is a video which more or less already exists on RUclips, but personally I didn't think it was living up to it's visual potential because of text segments that are used during the chorus, plus it didn't really have a proper intro or ending. So i've filled in the blanks and applied some editing and tidying up. I hope the original poster isn't offended by this and sees it more as a compliment to what they had done, and feels it has more of an impact the way it is now...

What I wouldn't give to be able to experience the 90s riot girl scene
It was FCKN' great! You Young Rebal Girl too!! ! I wish you could have too but so glad you HAVE the advantage to see it here!
you can experience the 20’s riot girl scene
Loved L7!
It’s Riot Grrl
Nick Patrick Cooper does it really matter??? some people have spell check shut up
As a Muslim Afghan girl I felt very repressed in my community. But I found Bikini Kill and my life changed. I became part of the riot grrrl movement and started a zine. I never looked back. Saw Bikini Kill in a show in DC where they were raising funds for the Rape Crisis Center. It was such a liberating and awesome night. I sent my zine to Kathleen and she sent her zine. She's amazing and had such thoughtful and kind words about my zine. They changed punk rock.

As a 21 year old in early 1992..... I got to experience one of the best musical revolutions ever.. Bikini Kill @ a small venue in Lacey Washington. It was intense, beautiful, new, fresh, exciting, scary..
So lucky😭
I was 24 loved the 80s 90s
Lacey Sucks 😉
the power that Kathleen Hanna holds is moving, her voice, her energy, her anger, her moves, her strong thighs and hand on hips ready to fight and protect, her thoughtful brain and powerful words coming from her smart mouth. AAAARGHH!!!! I love HER! I’m so fucking thankful for these girls, they LITERALLY saved my life and shaped me as a person
This is punk. I'm 42 years old in 2019, a straight Polish guy with a committed relationship over 20 years to a punk girl that now has her PhD and teaches as a college professor and and I love this. She's my rebel girl because she chose to be smart and fuck the haters with a loving partner at her side. I'm excited to start a new chapter in our lives as we just started trying to have a child. My wife is the best and I got so lucky.

Rebel girls: you're my heroes
It's awesome to see the new rebel girls (and guys!) still digging on what we did! (not that I'm an icon like Kathleen, aha, but I did my own small part back in the 80s and 90s.) and the haters (like incels) have and always will be scared and call us "man haters."
my god she is amazing...
Am here because I wanted to know who wrote "Kurt smells like teen spirit" on Kurt Cobain's Wall and made him think it sounds revolutionary when she was just saying he smells like his girlfriend's deodorant
she is and always will be a absolute feminist LEGEND
That isn't a badge of honour.
You could of said a musical legend but decided to die on a different hill like it’s something to be happy about lmao
it's not my fault you're self centered misogynistic assholes who cant stand to see a woman being equal to you or even being better than you. 😭
The pissed off dudebros are proving you right in the most concise and beautiful way
She always has been a cunt full of herself. Like "look at me Im a stupid bitch in need of attention and validation"🤣
Top song. Deranged RUclips comments. I love how certain people still find this threatening. 👍
She claimed to be all about equality and then made men stand at the back of the crowd. It's not "threatening", it's just hypocrisy.
Nothing threatening at all. Just calling out the bullshit that feminism is.
Shhhiiiit this is awesome I love this band
They were absolutely fantastic!
@@NefariousPorpoise yes I her documentary she explains it
It wasn't men to the back, it was girls to the front
In a lot (pretty much all) punk concerts, men would mosh in the front and make it pretty much inaccessable to a lot of girls, and just the culture was no great
Her calling girls to the front made it a lot easier for a lot more women to go to their shows
my mom is my rebel girl

Thanks for editing and posting this video. It's such an important song.
She is an amazing vocalist!
I agree, and while we're on the subject, when I first started listening to this band, and even now, there are moments in her vocals where she reminds me a lot of the style Poly Styrene had with X-Ray Spex..

FOR REAL
This is on most of my punk playlists. In 2023. When I was 17 a friend bought me a compilation of Vancouver Punk- the Dishrags were there, representing women. I've been a fan since then. This male punk has always supported our sisters. Rock on!
Her music hits so hard 🫶🏼
Saw them last night and they still kill! Love them even more
That power in her voice 😳
This meant so much to me especially growing up - thanks for splicing this together. It’s amazing! Thank you!
AMMMMAAAZZZZZING CONCERT TONIGHT. THEY'RE still incredible. And so many great stories, so much banter. And... they really have grown up. And STILL "HEY, grrrrls, if any guys are F'ing with you 》tell us. Get up Front"
glad this was on youtube otherwise I would never had heard, but thanks to Carrie Brownstein who wrote about this band. Nice to see some young people expressing their feelings.
Robert Berry Young people? Are you 80?? 😊
I used to listen to them back in the late 90s... I'm just now getting back to them.. Oh how I missed u
My love of all kinds of music bought me here, and I couldn't help comparing her to some of the Punk acts I used to see in London England in 1977-78 when I was 15/16. Her T-Shirt even features one of my favourite bands of my youth, 'The Jam.' Check them out, songs like 'Private Hell' 'News of the World' 'When You're Young' 'Down in the Tube Station at Midnight' 'Funeral Pyre' 'Strange Town' I could go on.. I love that bands like Bikini Kill exist after hearing so much bland manufactured stuff on the radio.
You sound just like myself around that period, same age, trying to sneak into Eric's in Liverpool to see all the great bands that were gearing up to play there. Definitely one of the best periods in time to live through for the sheer amount of bands that started to emerge because of the punk movement/scene, it inspired so much of what was to come in the years ahead, and still to this day.. Sadly though, over the last 30 years the music 'biz' has become more and more difficult for musicians and real artists to get the recognition they deserve, and personally I blame the birth of the karaoke machine, I mean just look at what it started, all sorts of wannabe's that has now transformed into this neverending treadmill of manufactured fake dross, urgh! Why have people not become tired of that shit?
A little bit Poly Styrene
@@bloochoob Very much so, indeed there are lots of Bikini Kill tracks that always remind me of X-Ray Spex, which is no bad thing as they were a great band and loved everything they did. I do think it's unintentional though and just one of those things, but yes Kathleen Hanna sounds remarkably like Poly..
This song is on my forever playlist.
This is is the best of pure punk of the 90's rolling into the likes of Fugazi, and bands that were from the LA scene so much good came of this scene if it was East Coast, Skate, Straight Edge, etc., this was to me and based on the time of my life the best part of all forms of music that had a soul to it and took the form of revolution on the basis of thought more than performance.
You should hear Antischism

As a queer child born into a place where girls were still being put in boxes and stereotypes were riding high, this band is absolutely amazing and I love their music.
Kathleen Hanna was boss and she would let you know it. Ask any guy who she would use her mic to pick a fight with at a show. Caused us to dress in drag just to avoid the drama..slippery slope.

One of the group's on the forefront of grunge music, or whatever u want to classify them as.
+Kenny Patton I think describing it as punk would fit like a glove, although their lead singer (Hanna) is/was responsible for giving Kurt Cobain the idea for the flagship grunge anthem of "Smells like teen spirit" ;)

Make More Space
We compartmentalize
Put everything in the right place
Make sure it fits
Gotta be just the right size
Put the love in here
Put the hurt in there
Put the past somewhere
The future can go just about anywhere
Look inside
Close the door
Hide inside
Go outside
That compartment can go for a ride
In this one we’ve been lied
In that one we’ve been tied
and that one
Maybe we should have been a little bit shied
When we get shook up
Things get a little out of place
Give us some time
We’ll put it back
or find a new place
We get older
Start to run out of space
Things have got to go
But they say
no
and don’t let go
Gets a little cluttered
Fall into this and trip over that
We might forget it
A smell
A face
A sound
That noise bring it back around
Don’t have to carry all this about
Turn up the heat
Watch it all melt
Let it flow
Let it flow out
Open space
Put it all in one place
You’ll have more space
