- For many Ukrainians, life has changed completely since Russia invaded the country.
Anton Kolumbet had already seen action in Donbas in 2014 when pro-Russian separatists annexed part of the region. He was not looking forward to fighting again. Now, one year on, DW’s Fanny Facsar and her team found him back in uniform - this time in a town in the Donetsk region, near the frontline.
Journalist Alya Shandra, Editor in Chief of the Euromaidan Press, an English-language website covering Ukraine. Alya Shandra was pregnant when Russia invaded Ukraine about how her life has changed in the last year.

It seems his commander is one of those old Soviet doctrine types that don't do constant rotations. I have heard that whether you get rotated or not depended on who your commander was largely.
More like, the Russians have functionally infinite bodies to throw into the front line, while the Ukrainians do not. Plus he is in one of the regions that still has heavy fighting going on.
In one of the more stagnant regions where the conflict is essentially paused, they are probably more able to rotate in and out.

It's a horrible thing, but war is part of our society. So if time comes, I must lay down my life for my family and those who have done the same for others. I will not hesitate, I will not turn back, I will never surrender, and I will NEVER say I cant!!! I will!
The only reason the war exists, is because Russia created conflict so that Ukraine is unable to join NATO.
If Ukraine was in NATO, there would be no war, no conflict.

Seems like this might indeed go on a long time. Plenty of intractable conflicts already in the region (see Serbia/Kosovo, Azerbajian/Armenia, etc.) left from the old soviet states breakup. Also, the Koreas were and remain split after the advent of nuclear weapons, and the people were basically the same before as here.
If Russia were to take the eastern part and cement this they would still want a buffer zone around the new Russian border and won't leave the western part alone.
If Ukraine were to push further, obviously Russia is the neighbour and not going anywhere soon.
If the west sends more sophisticated weapons without stripping the new parts then there is the chance China will get involved to test what happens in a fight against the latest western war machines. Ukraine's populace wellbeing can't truly be high on the agenda for either the US or China as it is far away on a different continent and not really sharing any close history or culture.
In any event the main savvy player so far seems to be China. Kind of hard to believe a year ago when they bungled the covid thing so badly.
Not a chance. Russia will not keep any of the occupied territory. Period. That's what the people of Ukraine want, their homes are trapped in occupied territory, with Russian troops living in them, wearing their clothes, driving their cars, selling their belongings. If you think Ukraine men and women are willing to just "give" their property to Putin or Russian forces, land they paid for and mortgaged, you are mistaken. He isn't going to keep 1 centimeter of any land that is internationally recognized as Ukraine's.

I'm impressed how Russia can not expand its logistics area beyond 90 miles in a neighboring country, instead how the United States could do it for all of Afghanistan even if it was on the other side of the world.

Well documented by the United Nations report, 51,000 civilian casualties killed by persecution in the Donbass region since 2014 to Jan 2022, before the war, because of their ethnicity and culture. It is a crime of holocaust proportion; the major reason for the war. The regime has now turned to persecuting ethnic Belarusians by forced conscription, just to poke and provoke Belarus, same as they did to Russia. I don’t know why anyone would want to support this regime with hard-earned taxpayers' money. Donbass and Luhansk are lucky to get liberated, to be able to live their lives freely away from tyranny. This regime don't deserves tax-payers' money.
