  • After weeks of encouraging shoppers to order less by slowing down promotions, coupons, ads and reviews, Amazon says delivery speeds are returning to normal. CNBC explores all the ways Amazon tweaked its online experience to encourage shoppers to buy less in recent weeks, and how that’s impacted sellers, customers and Amazon’s ability to catch up to a huge surge in demand.
Amazon has seen a huge surge in sales as people shopped from the safety of their homes during the coronavirus pandemic, but orders faced heavy delays as the e-commerce giant struggled to keep up.
In order to catch up, Amazon tweaked its online shopping experience to accomplish something extremely unusual: get shoppers to order less.
For weeks, Amazon stopped coupons, product recommendations and promotional deals. Mother's Day items weren't displayed on the homepage and Prime Day has reportedly been postponed indefinitely. It slowed down advertising, reviews, and its affiliate marketing and Fulfilled by Amazon programs, while placing strict limits on incoming inventory.
"They didn't have a choice but to slow down traffic, to turn off a lot of the features that were driving additional revenue and sales so that they could do their best to to supply families in need right now with these essential goods. I think that the other choice that they had would be to shut down. But I mean, Amazon became sort of an essential service for the country during this time," said Jason Boyce, founder of Amazon seller consultant group Avenue7Media.
Now, Amazon has started to turn these features back on, and delivery speeds are returning to normal.
Watch the video to learn all the ways Amazon tweaked its online experience to encourage shoppers to buy less so it could return to one-day Prime shipping sooner.

This is why we still need brick and mortar retailers. Amazon gives you counterfeit goods, delays in shipping, and for heavy/low-cost items it usually costs more to buy at Amazon.

    • @Variety1985
      @Variety1985 4 года назад +3

If I sold on Amazon's marketplace ... I would have to mark-up my SELLING PRICE 100% in order to deal with Amazon's FEES. A $100 item would have to sell for $200 on Amazon to make a PROFIT. BUT ... in a store I could sell that SAME ITEM for as little as $125 and still cover costs and MAKE A PROFIT while giving MY CUSTOMERS a WAY BETTER DEAL! So, SHOPPERS on Amazon are already PAYING WAY MORE MONEY from the very start!! SHOP LOCAL!!!
Here is a PBS Frontline report on Amazon ... as it turns out the company is willing to offer LOWER PRICES now and even LOSE MONEY until their competitors are gone for good!
      ruclips.net/video/RVVfJVj5z8s/видео.html

    • @Variety1985
      @Variety1985 4 года назад

It's been said ... "PEOPLE KNOW THE PRICE OF EVERYTHING and THE VALUE OF NOTHING." A recent PBS Frontline documentary on Amazon ... the company is willing to even "LOSE MONEY" until their competition is gone (BY THE WAY ... such operating tactics are ILLEGAL under both FEDERAL and STATE law!!). We, as consumers, are trained to find the lowest price ... but we may soon find no more local mom-and-pop stores only to leave the chain stores who are at liberty to RAISE PRICES with the little stores now gone. Thinking of that and even how STORE BRANDS are becoming a MONOPOLY on store shelves ... us CONSUMERS need to remain aware!!!
ONLINE SHOPPING is DOING HARM to retail as a whole but DON'T BE FOOLED ... these BIG BOX STORES want to CLOSE MORE LOCATIONS and the TRICK is to have everyone SHOP ONLINE. It means MORE PROFITS for them and LESS JOBS for all of us and our communities ... the WAREHOUSE JOBS will then be MOVED OUTSIDE THE U.S. for even BIGGER CORPORATE PROFITS!!!!
As ROBOTS "work" to pack your orders ... think of all that TRASH ("packaging") you toss from ordering online!!! SHOP LOCAL and see what you are buying and help SUPPORT YOUR COMMUNITY and LOCAL JOBS, too.
We have a POSTAL SYSTEM that FAVORS BIG BUSINESS and FAILS to provide LOWEST RATES to EVERYONE ... what mom-and-pop stores need to compete! As it is ... BIG BUSINESS wants to PRIVATIZE the U.S.P.S. so they FAVOR the BIG MAILERS.
NOW, if you have a SMALL BUSINESS wanting to sell online you are now required to follow more GOVERNMENT RED TAPE and CONSUMERS are made to PAY MORE TAXES!!
(see LETTER TO THE EDITOR ... LINK below)
And, to add to this LETTER ... are all those businesses in China that ship to U.S. states also COLLECTING and REPORTING the SALES TAX or are they void of the burden now facing small businesses in the U.S.?
      www.journaltrib.com/articles/commentary/online-sales-tax-collections-challenged-2/?fbclid=IwAR1CQtNLHmje05-DePJocFoWoR0r-VnymbYyBkiWxjiwtFii5fUT4369rc4

Website tells me my item will take a few days to deliver and then arrives the next morning most of the time. Besides that, as a Cdn, they were charging Cdn's the same fee for Amazon Prime but without the movies and tv for years. Took about 5 years for them to finally include in Cda but left a bad taste in my mouth. I haven't paid for membership and won't.

I got a letter yesterday saying I was getting a check but there was no check in the envelope. The government is so stupid sometimes. Only they could be dumb enough to know where I live but send the money somewhere else. Presumably the check was electronically sent to an old bank account I no long have. So the bank will refuse the payment and send it back at which point the government will cut a physical check and send it to the place they sent the letter to 3 months ago. That's a genuinely impressive level of stupidity considering their priority was to get the money out to people as fast as possible. And because they know my correct bank info and address because I get Social Security. I guess the treasury is sending the checks to whatever bank account was most recently used for a tax return. The IRS is getting that info from whatever tax prep service you may have used in the past rather than using their own information. In my case that info is from about 2005. The really stupid part is the IRS has my correct address and know where I bank but they still opted to use the information from the tax prep service instead of their own contact information for me. Again that's an impressive kind of dumb right there. So I guess I'll get this check in a few months presumably?🤦‍♂️

It's pretty much back to normal now. As a buyer and seller I immediately noticed the changes they made. I don't send stuff in to Amazon but I compete on certain products with sellers that do. Until about May 10 my products were prioritized over FBA items and my sales skyrocketed, probably 20 fold. They've now got their shipping times down and third party sellers that ship their own products are once again removed from the Buy It Now box even if their price is lower than sellers that use Amazon warehouses. So it's back to normal. Whether or not this is actually fair is a matter of opinion. I can tell you that letting Amazon ship your items (and take a bigger cut) usually means you sell 5 to 50 times more.

When AMAZON remains open ... but MOM-AND-POP businesses may have had to CLOSE. When WALMART chooses to lead YOU through their stores like CATTLE ... but MOM-AND-POP businesses may have had to CLOSE. WHO will YOU CHOOSE to SHOP with in the future ... SHOP LOCAL NOW AND FOREVER!!
Amazon and all of those "other" BIG BOX STORES are ALLOWED TO REMAIN OPEN while SMALL MOM-AND-POP BUSINESSES ARE MADE TO CLOSE!!!
FUNNY too, how Amazon Web Services (AWS) owns all of the data centers and provides services to the C.I.A. and MILLIONS of small and large businesses ... that serves MILLIONS of customers who provide data to these data centers at the rate of BILLIONS OF TRANSACTIONS per day. Could it be possible through the USER AGREEMENTS that Amazon (and even the C.I.A.) has ACCESS to all of this information to, well, SPY ON PEOPLE? Perhaps Amazon and the C.I.A. is having a SPECIAL "BOOK BURNING" PARTY of George Orwell's BOOK "1984." PEOPLE, it's time to WAKE UP ... it looks like we are WELL PAST 1984!!!!
Nice, GOVERNMENT helps to keep OPEN Amazon and other businesses that the GOVERNMENT has declared "ESSENTIAL" while SMALL BUSINESSES are MADE TO FAIL!
And, DON'T BE FOOLED!! Pushing SMALL BUSINESSES to SELL ONLINE (CURBSIDE, PHONE, etc. ... with a credit/debit card) and for EVERYONE to COMMUNICATE ONLINE via video, etc. ... it's nothing more than BIG BANKS and GOVERNMENT wanting YOU to use the INTERNET where they may CONTROL, PROFIT, and MONITOR just about EVERYTHING!!!
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH ... STOP "DRAINING Main Street" and go back to "DRAINING THE SWAMP!" PEOPLE ARE SICK of seeing our ECONOMY DESTROYED ... they have HAD ENOUGH GOVERNMENT DAMAGE to their LIVES and LIVELIHOODS!!! Let's GET BACK TO WORK, America!!
This PBS Frontline documentary has a lot to say about Amazon and the FACT that they are WILLING TO LOSE MONEY to put their COMPETITORS OUT OF BUSINESS!!!

The struggle is real. Being disabled and on chemotherapy as a high risk person I’ve relied on online shopping and 1-2 day at most receiving it for 4 years of it for me it’s a huge deal to not get essentials which may not be to the normal person but to most of disabled people they are every day used essential. Technically it’s illegal discrimination and violation of our civil disabled federal ADA rights to be treated with priorities. Personally as a 12 year dedicated users, past top 20,000 reviewer for 3 years of products and still in the top 30,000 reviewers for reviews of purchased items I have taken my business entirely elsewhere to get it same day or next day by the stores themselves and haven’t used Amazon since February was my last order because I couldn’t wait 25-45+days for the products I needed and ordering. It’s a shame they didn’t allot for certain people during this time period like the huge businesses and then small ones followed suit having special shopping hours for elderly, high risk and disabled people before normal operating hours we have the stores to ourselves which they make sure the night before it’s stocked with everything they can since we only can shop at these times one day a week which isn’t enough. There’s not enough room in a refrigerator even a sub zero to hold everything I can buy and use daily for myself and dogs for 8 days or more and why getting items every 4-5 at most is what my caretaker was doing but since she quit on me I’m left with no caretaker and no way to get a new one for the 156 hours a month I get a paid caretaker to be here with me all day everyday doing things for me and as I need them. It’s made more difficult by not being able to get items online and quickly when I can’t leave the house.

Its a warehouse job, youre not an engineer you're not a programmer or etc, therefore you're not worth getting paid 50k or more a year for picking boxes and putting them in a bigger box. I worked for Amazon, I get it, the pay sucks for the physical labor you put in, but I got out because I knew I could learn a trade or go back to school. Now I'm a programmer working from home making good money. If you're so adamant about working for Amazon cause you can't get a job elsewhere then work a little hard and work your way up to a manager or something.

The north american retail business’s operating income has decreased by 40% compared to Q1 of 2019 while the has gone up by $8 billion.
However, AWS, amazons cloud service, makes up of more than 50% of amazon’s income and continues to increase by like30% per annum, or quarter. So aws def offsets any losses brought about by amzn’s na and int’l business.
Its shipping cost to cost of sales increased to sth like 25% and its profit is at 2% or less.
The catch is, their na profit margin has been on a downward trend since the beginning of 2019. Used to be a good 5-6% back in 2018 and shipping Cost to cogs was at 20% mark. demand is popping for delivery, so what can you do about its shipping cost. I think they are working on logistics anyways to bring cost down, so thats hopeful.

Thank God for Amazon and Whole Foods. I legit would not have been able to stay healthy and sane without them. Delivery on essential items has been stellar.

As a customer and a stockholder, I appreciate the white lie. I would not have wanted to see a message strewn across Amazon’s home page saying “Hey you, maybe don’t buy so much from us today.”

$15 for a 24 pack of coke and $12 for a bottle of ranch dressing? Lol. I'll take my risk at the supermarket. Never heard of boxed.com and now it makes sense why.

This is going to be a huge problem during the Holiday Season. Some stores are just going to cancel Black Friday deals and keep everything at regular price to slow sales and get their profit back.

No telling what november looks like, but by the current outlook, promoting and pushing a consumer shopping fest in November seems like a bad idea.

I seem to get extra bad service from A. as I've never complained about late deliveries. Sometimes I need it ASAP but most of the time I don't.

I think if amazon built its own hubs where products can be stored to pick up that would be efficient. Giving the user options for home delivery or hub pick up. It’d make shipping flow faster having chunk of packages from an area go to one spot. They have the money. And it be an option.
