I actually enjoy Jason as like a backwoods survivalist tbh, being able to weld up weapons and use different weapons and craft up shelters and traps tbh, makes it more interesting and scary tbh, a outdoor Craftsman as u will
There’s nothing wrong with that, but that’s not Friday the 13th. It’s The Burning or Hatchet or two dozen other films. Friday the 13th is about a mentally challenged, deformed kid exacting revenge on the kinds of people who picked on him and caused his mother’s death. He shouldn’t be very smart, which is why he is able to be tricked by people pretending to be his mother or himself. Making him smart contradicts this very behavior the filmmakers are homaging. It doesn’t make sense. Jason should be portrayed as more of a wild animal than a man. He operates by instinct rather than intelligence.
This movie is a reboot that tries to do its own thing while keeping the spirit of the originals. They tried to create a different-toned Jason and Friday film for modern audiences to be modern and more intense like the more modern torture porn Horror flicks. The trick to doing a remake is to do something different and here they update Friday for modern audiences while keeping the teen antics and nudity it isn't perfect but this is a good solid modern take on Friday that really could have just been another sequel.
It's not even that big a departure from Steve Dash building all those little huts and killing people with mechanical tools and hunting weapons in Part II.
I actually do like how they managed to basically condense the first 4 films into a single narrative that makes sense. That’s one of the few good things that the remake did well
It's been seven years... Have you found any new friends? Or did you decide that it's easier to just ignore the idiocy and small annoyances of the friends you already had? Personally, I think friends are overrated. One or two good, close friends is all I have ever needed.
jason seems to be super well connected and organized (hints the security lights, the traps, the bow, the machete holder, the machete sharpener, and the cabin)
Jasons machete got a better backstory in this. If you look closely at the beginning yowl see its the same machete that his mom and Alice used to kill people. He picks it up as a child and is still using it
The biggest thing I hated in the movie was the Trent character dude was so over the top dickish that I hated it especially since we didn't even get to see him get killed in a cool way
The beginning kinda reminds me of how I would make a prequel to "Texas Chainsaw Massacre", I would revolve it around Grandpa Sawer, and I'd want a large chick of the film set in the Philippines during WW2, say that he was one of the Marines trapped in the Philippines when the Japanese invaded, and MacArthur promised he'd return. Maybe he eventually murders and eats his Drill Sergeant when he kills his friend for retreating. I don't know, I think it could be a cool setting for the first half, or most of the film, with the maddening isolation of the jungles of the Philippines, and the constant threat and paranoia of the Japanese army hunting them down, and beheading them all, being a better explanation for how this all started. Better than what we got in the crappy remake's crappy prequel.
This film isn’t perfect but of three slasher biggies that got reboots (Halloween, F13, Elm Street), this was easily the best one. Also, it’s vague enough with the timeline, you could argue it’s still canon to the other films to an extent. They honestly should’ve kept it blatantly canon to the 1980 first film. It’s a reboot in name only, for all intents and purposes it functions exactly like a part 12 would.
I unfortunately don't have enough time to make all four videos this Ahhctober. I only have enough time to make one more this month. So the next vid will be Halloween 2 and it will be posted on or the day before Halloween. TCM The Beginning and the NoES remake reviews will be up in November. I got a new job that takes up too much time and these reviews take a lot of time to make. Sorry.
Coming back and watching this review again, it's made me realize i probably wouldn't hate all these remakes as much if they didn't artificially darken everything and have constant jump cuts. It's the same thing with the Texas chainsaw remakes and the elm Street remake, it's hard to be scared when you can't see what the fucks going on
This movie had lots of flaws, but I loved Jason in this movie. The idea of some supernatural mute being able to run full speed like a monster is terrifying.
In this movie he's not meant to be supernatural he just never really drowned and living in the woods having to survive since a kid and hunting and everything he had to do is y he's so big
Very long theory ahead: Part of me likes to think that Jason's mom tried to kill him herself through drowning because she may have felt that she couldn't handle the burden of taking care of him any longer. Then, when she thought Jason was actually dead, the guilt and love for her son was what drove her insane. Out of denial of her crime, she blames Camp Crystal Lake for the supposed death of her son and kills anyone who tries to run it again in a misguided attempt to save future children from Jason's fate. Pamela might have wanted to blame the counselors because she may have seen them as filthy degenerates that weren't fit to care for children, what with their drinking and "making love." Jason never returns to her mother out of fear and lives out his life peacefully in the woods. Then he sees her mother get killed by Alice in Part 1. Out of a kind of revenge, Jason carries on his mother's Crystal Lake murders because he still loved her and part of him wanted to believe the lies she told herself. He probably couldn't believe that his mother would ever try to kill him and he may have been treated poorly by the counselors. I just personally think the idea that hundreds of people died because of a lie told by a crazy person is pretty scary.
That's pretty good. I can see that as a way to explain it. I loved the original, just wish they would've thought it through a little better to make the transition to part 2. LOL They are what they are, and I will always love them for it.
I think this is one of the better reboots. I can get why older people might not but for me the first I saw of Jason was Freddy vs Jason and Jason X. The remake might be typical horror movie stereotypes but it’s also the most serious and dark I’ve seen Jason and the most he’s been since the first couple originals. Lately I’ve been going back to watch the early 2000 horror remakes and stuff and a lot of them have the same energy and vibe- Not that the 80s/90s felt very diverse either. But I really liked this one. At least compared to the other remakes.
It was brutal when he kept bashing the chic in the sleeping bag against a tree! Not to mention hilarious. The humor was a huge part in 80's slasher movies, but the remakes of today try to appeal to people with a darker tone that make them seem kind of stupid because it's still not scary or funny.
Really? some of the deaths were not up to speed? the bear trap was new, heck he put a screw driver to a guys throat, and it took him close to over 30 seconds for him to die. The deaths were standard Friday the 13th, but the chewy death with the screw driver was pretty brutal, that was almost a torcher like, and killing the cop with the pole was a cool death also
I can't believe I just sat through a 19min. movie review. Must've been all that witty commentary :) That was hilarious!! Good job!! Loved the Scooby-Doo reference. And it's not that wild of a theory considering the horrible plots the writers of these type of movies contrive.
Love the Citizen Kane reference! Thoroughly entertaining review as always. Great work DW! Compared to the other remakes, it's better than most so I'd probably grab it from a 99¢ bin if I saw it on top of the pile. Wouldn't dig it for though.

I think the it all really boils down to, is Jason a zombie or not or some kind of spirt being, did he die when he drowned in the lake and just came back later on, or did he just survive and got out lake when noone was looking. Response to around 2:45 time period
If Jason was in boy scout and tried to get badges for murdering people he would get kicked out of boy scouts right away, they are not going to give someone a badge because said person imbedded an axe or arrow in someone's head.
Why did they show Jason about to kill that guys sister? I mean we see her alive and tied up in chains at the end of the movie, so what was the actual point of that scene? I guess he just changed his mind cause all the lights went out, why do i suddenly feel like some bacon quiche
It's like a remake of when the girl put his mom's sweater on and he imagined his mom was alive. It's like he thinks she's his mom or she looks like his mom enough to keep her around

I think it’s funny that Trent in this movie is the same Trent from the 2007 Transformers
I love the review! Great review for a sucky film! It saves me from having to see it on AMC tonight.
I think the it all really boils down to, is Jason a zombie or not or some kind of spirt being, did he die when he drowned in the lake and just came back later on, or did he just survive and got out lake when noone was looking. Response to around 2:45 time period
this guy is pretty funny
Could you review Ed Gein at all? I haven't seen the movie, but I'd like to see your review.
