    This is the first movement of Chao-Jan Chang's cello composition, 4 Moods for Solo Cello. Each movement reflects a mood, such as fury, imagination, meditation, etc. This movement, flying, is very lyrical and poetic. The virtuoso cellist, Jan Muller-Szeraws, recorded this piece in 2009 in the Chapel of Phillips Academy in Andover, MA.

    This is gorgeous. I need to say - the celloist looks like he could have walked straight out of the BBC production of Pride and Prejudice. A cello-playing Darcy.

    Mr. Chao-Jan Yang - you are a great talent. I don't know why your music has not been recorded and published internationally - it is truly a treasure. I look forward to your rise to global recognition for your work. Thank you for your gift of music.

    @wsayready:
    Thanks! It was recorded in the Chapel of Phillips Academy in Andover, MA. The reverb is longer than I would like, but works fine for this movement. I have DPA mics, but because some parts are so quiet, especially the 2nd and 4th movements , I used AKG 480s instead.

      I kinda agree in the sense that the beginning sounded very curios then it turned to adventurous and exciting. If I were to pick a movie it would probably be the section of brave where Merida is finds the wisps the first time to the end

    Cello being my favorite instrument, followed by the piano, I will concede my bias. But nothing sounds as good or is as proficient at evoking emotion like this instrument.

    The setup and the area he has is excellent as that seems like an excellent place to practice. With more practice, his playing of this piece will be more concise.

    I realize this is an older post but if anyone involved in the production of this wonderful piece might see this, I'd like to ask what mic (or mics) were used.. and really what the entire signal chain (or at least mic pre-amp) was ? I find this to be an exceptional cello recording... .. at least for what I like to hear. A prefect balance of room ambiance and performance detail. The character and nuances of the actual instrument are also well captured. Bow transients and string harmonics are well defined but still perfectly subtle as to not detract the listener's attention from the beauty of the music itself. I'd love to know what equipment was used.

    • @arammolina7837
      @arammolina7837 9 лет назад

      Puts his legs up and he presses the cello too.

    • @Sam22music
      @Sam22music 9 лет назад +1

      Aram Molina Well, I find that I do that myself sometimes. It comes from trying to create a proper balance in holding the instrument. It's usually unintentional (I find) and just feels right to help play out notes on the lower strings, or lower notes in general, in proportion to playing them on the A and D strings.
      So, essentially, he isn't "doing anything special."
