I was born and raised in Welch WV, I graduated in the Class of 1982. As I approach my retirement years, I thought I would return to Welch, I have so many fond memories, but the reality is, Welch is quickly fading away and this is sad to see. As the world seems to be “falling into place” I thought my return to Welch would be my sanctuary for such a time as this. Regrettably this is not the case, Welch as I remember it, is a memory, what remains, is beyond words.
@@cathead77 2 questions. When were the traffic signals removed. Also I understand Welch was already in serious decline by the mid 90s but when did it become deserted?
@@Progressive2024 The traffic lights just phased out over a period of time. Welch is not exactly deserted, but it's not a fraction of what it was. The biggest one-time blow was maybe when US Steel closed down in the late 80s.
Welch, McDowell and its history is truly fascinating...and its folks are something special...true salt of the earth type people. I am from Germany and went to McDowell this summer. I am now doing a little documentary-style video about the area and the history. Would you give me permission to use your video footage for the RUclips video I am making? It's for non-comercial purposes only. I will of course credit your channel in the description. This footage is particularly interesting being that you drove past the Old Emergency Hospital and other building that are no longer there; thank you in advance and a great start of the year for you.
When ever Dad would take us 'back home' to McDowell Cnty we'd all get sick and throw up every few miles. The endless curves effects people's brains I think!
Thank you so very much for sharing this. It brings back some great memories. I would like to know it you have a similar video about the same time for Grundy VA.
Despite 1994 being well past its prime, it doesn't look nearly as dead as it does today.
It was already in decline

I graduated in 1970 and have never left. Welch is only a shadow of what it was, but Welch is not dead. Thanks for watching.
Certainly looks quite a bit differently now. Blows my mind seeing a traffic signal downtown!
There were several back in the day.
What happened to the signals?
When were they removed?

Thanks for watching.
Can you upload the full video unedited?
This is the only portion that was about Welch. It was on an old VHS tape with all kinds of different subject matter on it.
@@cathead77 Ok cool. Thank you.
