Nice singles collection! Thank you for helping me to rediscover the Jets! You Got It All is a beautiful song but I had forgotten the artist and song title. Stands out as one of the favorite songs of my childhood. Just learned it was written by Rupert Holmes.
The album (Vandross's first as a solo artist) was popular, although it failed to sell in large numbers initially. Sales were boosted by his other chart successes and, eventually, by his death. A remixed version of the song reached number 13 on the UK singles chart in November 1989.
Thanks, Jarrod! Much appreciated. I didn't know that "Never Too Much" was Luther Vandross' first single, although I did know about the 1989 remix. It was on the Monster Hits compilation album that I got for Christmas that year. :)
another abso great collection. you got a good collection bro. i am so enjoying. love man in motion. onto part 3. i got the theme from welcome back kotter on 45 as well. mike from canada eh
hi matt, you know much about 80s charts, lot's of nice singles. i only have 40 7 inch singles in my collection now, but i think pick up singles in a big box in record store is pretty enjoyable
Thanks, Leo. I have found it can be an advantage having grown up in the UK when it comes to record hunting in the US. I've found lots of British artists for dirt cheap, even in record stores, because the sellers didn't know anything about them. In reality, most of them were hits in the UK but not hits in the US (or at least, very minor hits in the US). I've found British 80's artists like Samantha Fox, Rick Astley, Belinda Carlisle, Mel & Kim, Curiosity Killed the Cat, Nik Kershaw, Bananarama, and lots more besides, Now, some of those artists (in particular Bananarama, Rick Astley and Belinda Carlisle) did have a couple of hits in the US but were much bigger in the UK. I've also gone digging at thrift stores with friends and they pass up all of these vintage 80's albums because they don't know what they are. That's when I swoop and say "I'll take that please!" I have 18 of the first 20 Now That's What I Call Music! albums, the first 16 of which are from the 80's. I am going to do a video on those soon, after I've finished going through the 45 collection (and possibly the 12 inch singles collection). You said you have 40 7 inch singles. You should do a video on them! I didn't used to care much for singles but they really grew on me for a coupe of reasons: 1) Some songs only had single releases and were not on any albums. 2) If you just like one or two songs from an album, buying the singles can be cheaper than buying the album (depends on the album of course).
i checked out some of artist you mentioned. very enjoyable 80's music. next time i think i could pick some records from these artist. in germany all 80's music are also cheap, too. 80's music i think is the best music for dancing at home alone. i'm sure that most guilty pleasure are from 80's. mine is culture club, hahahah. i do play their records a lot.
Yeah, I have one of Culture Club's albums. The 80's is always divisive! Some people think it's when music started to go downhill with all the synthesizers, the decline of artists writing their own songs, and the loudness wars with CD's. Other people, myself included, think that the 80's did have some great music - certainly great pop music - and was miles better than most of the so-called "music" released today. Although the 80's is the most nostalgic decade for me (I grew up in the 80's), objectively I think the 70's was the overall best decade for music.
interesting fact kylie minogue actually chose suddenly herself as the wedding song in neighbours and the reason it only got to number 3 in the UK was because kylie and Jason especially for you stopped it getting to number 2 as they were number 2 at the time of its release lol
Thanks, Chris, I didn't know that Kylie chose the music herself. I did know it got to number 3 and I know the infamous story of how Mistletoe & Wine kept Especially For You off the top spot in Christmas 1988. Much to Pete Waterman's eternal irritation (he still talks about it). I think I remember him saying PWL made the mistake of using the same pressing plant as EMI did for MIstletoe & Wine and they couldn't keep up with the demand for both singles.
Matt Hayes I didn't know that about mistletoe and wine actually least it made number one in the end I really like the b side all I wanna do is make you mine. also did you know donna summer planned a second album with pwl but because she couldn't make it to the UK to record all the songs were given to Lonnie Gordon.
Donna Summer's planned (canned!) second album with PWL does vaguely ring a bell but I didn't know her songs were given to Lonnie Gordon. Mind you, it would hardly be the first time PWL wrote songs for one artists only to give them to another!

Saikana's Treasures Thank you! :)
Luther Vandross' first single was 1981 "Never Too Much". Matt, you do a great job and it's obvious you have love for your music. Keep it up! Jarrod
