    I've been watching Brent's channel since a month after he started, this has become more than a business venture for him at this point it's become a life defining project. I'm pleased he and his friends are restoring Cerro Gordo because it keeps the memory of all the people that lived and worked to the bone to get on in life, these folk are the folk that literally built America's wealth, pulling it out of the ground with their bare hands and they deserve their place in history. I don't know why this fascinates someone like me on this side of the pond, maybe seeing our mining towns going into decline in the 80s makes it resonate, maybe it's the sheer endeavor and industry of the people living on the edge and prospering, I don't know it just does fascinate me. BTW you'd get up there quicker in old Mini.

    I just returned from Fossil Falls yesterday. Google Earth showed that the road to Little Lake Lookout wasn't very difficult but it was. There was some washed out areas where I could see others doing some foot scouting before heading any further. I managed to make it to the Little Lake Lookout. I've traveled through the Easter Sierras for the last 15 years or so but only now taking the time to do some camping along the 395. The views are just breath taking and it's so peaceful there.
    I may have to travel to Cerro Gordo one of these days.

    If you think you're taking a slow trip up to Cerro Gordo. Try imagining going up that same road being pulled by a team of male's like it was back around 1865.

      I thought about that on the way up. I’m sure the road was not in as good of shape as it was when I went up it. You are so right. It must have been a long trek.

    At 3:56 to 5:04 you are looking down at the Owens Valley and Owens Lake (which is usually dry). The mountains beyond Owens Valley, with snow on them, is the eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. If you were to go over those mountains you would be in Yosemite. Owens Lake used to be huge until Mr Mulholland drained the basin to feed water to LA in an aqueduct hundreds of miles long. This was a huge disaster for all the farmers and families living in the valley and surrounding area. For reference, west to east, you have the sierras, the Owens Valley, the Inyo Mts (Cerro Gordo) and then Death Valley and the Nevada border. Mr Muholland had a famous street (Mulholland Drive) named for him in the Hollywood Hills and the population of the Owens Valley was rewarded with drought and despair.

      Thanks for clearing that up for viewers, Michael. I had a couple of friends who thought Owen’s Valley was Death Valley.

    Cerro Gordo is a community not far from Cottage Grove, OR. It was supposed to be a fairly large counter-culture development and even though it did not work out it still is way more populated than some desert ghost town. I think people still live up there, don't know for sure.

    • @MLStanleyK
      @MLStanleyK 7 месяцев назад +3

      Wrong Cerro Gordo - the one this video is talking about in in the Death Valley area, 700 miles from Oregon.

    • @williamfuller2389
      @williamfuller2389 7 месяцев назад +2

      Cerro Gordo is a community in Illinois. Cerro Gordo is in North Carolina. So, you see there is more than one location with that name. Any time watching this video clearly shows it not taking place in Oregon, Illinois nor North Carolina but rather in the desert area between Death Valley and Lone Pine. The draw of this particular Cerro Gordo is not the number of inhabitants it now holds but rather the rich history of mining in the Eastern Sierra and conditions those living there in those days had to contend with.

      I had it in 4 high. But I was shooting with two cameras and used the 4wd to help keep speed consistent. I go up in in a 2x4 provided the rode is in as good of condition as it was when I went up it. If you go, check with the guys in Cerro Gordo. They can tell you the condition of the road.

    Question did you finish the door or replace it before it rained. I have been planning a trip there myself, I have had a couple of setbacks, my trucks engineer needs injectors, and my RV blew a tire ripping I hope in the body and the kitchen those nothing to needing TKR total knee replacement rehab is looking at 6-8 more months. I have I load of tools I am going to donate to Brent, what did you see he needed the most. ?

      @jimandvalstravelchannel  4 месяца назад

      Hi Tom. Somehow I missed your response until just now. I did not repair the door. I put it back together as it was. They need woodworking tools. Hand tools as well as some power tools. I would like to build a new door and get it installed. We are retiring and my woodshop is going to be eliminated. So don’t know if I will have time to get a new door built before we sell the house. We are going full-time travel.

      I know some younger people who would have issues. Anyone who isn’t used to elevation will feel it. The more you go above say 4k, the more you are going to feel it. Bishop is around 4K and isn’t a problem for most folks.

    When I visited Cerro Gordo with my dog, there was a building with a kitchen and dining area. Seems I recall there was a table set up as a poker table and as the story goes, a man was shot there accused of cheating. In any case. I read somewhere. That building burned to the ground couple years ago. In this vid, I noticed some new framework for a building. Wondering if that is going to be a replacing the original that burned?

    • @jimandvalstravelchannel
      @jimandvalstravelchannel  7 месяцев назад +1

      That is the new American Hotel, which replaces the hotel that burned a few years ago.

    • @edcook9747
      @edcook9747 7 месяцев назад +2

      Thanks. Bummer the old one burned. It was kinda cool. I got to walk all through it. BTW, there are elevated roadways out on Owens lake you can drive out on. Couple of viewing areas to pull out on with structures and history. Nice views and peaceful out there if wind isn’t blowing.
