Thanks to our friends at L.L.Bean, Pelican Coolers, FMCA, and the Highway Weather App for supporting RV Miles. Find the discounts mentioned on the show at www.RVMiles.co....
Thank you for straightening out the road side assistance dilemma. I'll be calling FMCA today.
Great job on explaining Roadside assistance. Abby's hit the nail on the head how videos of RUclips is calling out the companies. Don
You guys are hilarious. J, I 100% agree about the RV websites. I have been researching all summer. I search on something specific like Ford 350 .... and the picture or info is a Chevy chassis. Also, after looking at different web sites and dealer sites most of the time the features don’t match. Drives me nuts. So, basically everything I have figured out is from RUclips. At the beginning of the year I came across Matt’s reviews. He is great, glad you gave him a shout out. Then that led me to guys and a couple more channels. Love your topics and info. Very helpful. Thanks for all the content. 😊 Vanessa
We are so glad you landed here, Vanessa and thanks for sharing your experience researching and shopping. It's not for the faint of heart! Have a great day - Abby
I grew up in Waco. We’re you at lake Waco? It’s H.E.B for Henry E Butts. San Antonio! Good guy that started it all. Love Matt’s RV reviews as well. Started watching him when he was at like 15-17k followers.
Beautiful snow falling behind you though. Good luck on the RV search. Stills deciding myself. Do I pay big bucks for a DW truck and fairly big bucks for a fifth wheel or just get a Class A say 30-34’ to be able to still get in many campgrounds or just buy a TT to pull behind my 1/2 ton F150 4X4? Decisions decisions
You guys make me laugh every week😀I totally understand that slam about the weather- Michigan people do the same thing- 50 degrees?! Break out the shorts!
Also, totally agree about social media consumer driven quality control on the RV industry. I think that an informed public is really helping to hold them to higher standards and new buyers are researching things before they buy. And finally- congrats on your article in RV magazine, Abby!
Thank you for joining us every week, Cindy and thanks for the congrats too. I admit I am pretty giddy seeing my work in print. 😀😀
Great video guys.... When my family was looking into buying a RV for full time living, we searched every type, both big and small. However, we are in the same boat as you guys. We have 2 teenagers and most RV bunkhouses are to small for them. So we went into the toy hauler field. We have found that toy haulers are the way to go, because the extra room in the back makes a perfect large bedroom for our kids. They have an amazing amount of room and freedom in their space. We only bring all of this up, because teenagers keep growing and they need space. So, our advice to anyone and everyone, with teenagers, is go with a large toy hauler. Keep up the great work.....
Growing boys = space for sleeping and space for lots of food! Lol.
Wow!! Good information about roadside assistance programs.
OMG! I’m SO with Abby on the brain-teaser for this week! 😱 PLEASE ... the headache! You lost me in the 2nd sentence - and honest, I’m no dummy.
Looking forward to next week ANYWAY. 😉
As a Texan I can say the Tx drivers and bridges comment is true and so funny! The maps thing is because of all of the construction -they can’t keep it straight. Seriously. Happens. All. The. Time. 😂So glad Abby told us about her article-y’all should do that more often!!
You just stated the very reason I don't use a GPS for cross country driving with the RV. I might use it for some local stuff without the RV. Traveled cross country for decades without a GPS.
Good info on travel insurance types , costs & benefits. The fine print gets everyone!
A few notes before I go see the new reveal...
1- Abby, I agree that no one should have to spend 6 figures to get something safe and reliable.
2. your article is in the February issue? Looking forward to it! (Congratulations!)
3. the interchanges are terrifying! I had a dream I died by crashing through the wall of one (that was a long time ago...I haven't had to drive in years :-) )
4. It's PUH-KAHN...ALWAYS!!! (j/k)
5. H-E-B is an acronym. And it's open to everyone. In Ft. Worth, the HEB store is Central Market (IDK why the name is different but Waco might have a Central Market too)
It's H E B. It stands for the original owner of the supermarket. Howard E. Butt. The Butt family still owns the grocery. It originated in Kerrville, Texas. The plus is just a larger store. It has more items for sale such as furniture and some clothing. There is no membership to the grocery. The store has an app if you are intimidated by the size of the store. They offer curbside pick up which is great but HEB is an experience. I missed it when I lived in Arizona and Maryland. Glad to be back in Texas. If you can find it try the HEB Cafe brand Hill Country coffee. It is delicious. Welcome to Texas!
Another amazingly insightful podcast! Cannot get over all that Waco snow!
It sounds like AAA Roadside Assistance took a couple of pages from the Thousand Trails labyrinth-plan playbook.... Appreciate your thoughts and perspective.
Abby - don’t be embarrassed by your thrill of seeing your work in print! It is exciting, and we share in your enthusiasm! (like a Playbill!)
You guys are the best! Look forward to 178.
FYI: You can also get the same Roadside Service FMCA sells from Escapees RV Club for a better price. The club is better priced, too, making for a lot of savings.
We had both AAA and Good Sam, however, at least when we sold our fifth wheel and purchased our current horse trailer with living quarters we switched to USRider. The others, at least at the time did not cover horse trailers. So read the fine print.
Great tip, Paul!
We had the same GPS problems in Kentucky two years ago. It seemed like the GPS signal was being jammed. We were taken miles out of the way and Google changed from driving to walking.
Very useful info on roadside assistance, thanks. What campground are you at in Waco?
Excellent video. Glad to see someone shares my opinion about most RV manufacturer web sites being terrible. Dealers with poor quality video or photos from a vintage camera phone, very limited photos to show features/decor, poorly written/edited text. RUclips is very good source. Matt is good, but his shtick gets old after a while. RV Concierge is excellent. Your overview of roadside assistance was very helpful. Thanks. Travel safe.
We were stranded in a ditch and AAA didn’t even call us back to tell us they couldn’t find anybody. Luckily the sheriff recommended I call them back after 30 minutes of not hearing anything from them. Otherwise we would have been waiting a lot longer thinking someone was on the way.
Welcome to this week's RV Miles Podcast Show! Do you have roadside assistance, and if so, are you happy with it? What do you love about it, what do you wish was improved? Let us know in the comments, and of course, don't forget to give the video a big ol' thumbs up and if you're new to the channel - welcome! We hope you'll subscribe and check out our other videos. See you next week! - Jason and Abby
I too am looking for a new toy hauler and just trying to narrow down the must have's. This is crazy.
Yes it is! Good luck in your search!
Welcome to Texas. H-E-B Plus is just a bigger grocery store. No membership needed. Ya'll crack me up with all the Texas stuff.
I love your Chicago analogy. So true so true I live in Illinois just south west of it so get it
Very informative.
I will have to check out Coach-net and FMCA. I have AAA and have used it successfully for cars and motorcycles. I wonder if the RV centric companies cover motorcycles. Also, sorry about Da Bears but my Browns have finally, after 24 years, got a playoff win. Thanks for the info. Smiles from snowless Ohio.
Great info on roadside assistance. We are less than 2 weeks away from full timing. So confusing on who covers what.
I hear Geico is good as well. I hope so cause that's what I have
Good Morning. We have uses it On trailer two times and truck two times. . Formers ins. ( Trailer ) Farmers ins. (CAR ) Included with ins. They would tow truck and Trailer.
Roadside assistance; you keep mentioning “if you have a big RV” vs “if you have a smaller RV”. I’m clueless where the line is here.
I drive a 27’ Winnebago motorhome. Would this, in your world, be a “smaller RV” or a “bigger RV”? Thanks for clarifying.
🤣🤣🤣 ok... as a native Texan, two quick side notes:
1) NObody says “Pee-can”...ever.
2) The grocer is the founder’s initials. The letters “HEB” - for Howard Edward Butt. (obviously better than buying your groceries from Butt’s Foods....?) But, it is the letters H-E-B, just for reference.
Very good video
Be careful with GOOD SAM roadside assistance. I was having engine problems 😫 with my motorhome and they almost towed me to a rv repair dealership that DOES NOT WORK ON ENGINES. I called the facility and confirmed that they didn't work on engines before I was towed. I had to give GOOD SAM both "barrels" when they insisted they were right and I was wrong.
I have been researching for a new trailer also. Have you guys looked into an Alliance? I’m not in the market for a 5th wheel, but the company really seems impressive.
Congratulations on ur article in the magazine.
Thank you!
HEB+ is like a super wal Mart no fees or membership. I lived in texas 4 years so I know. Try out a Central market. It's an HEB but lots of different items.
I love listening to y’all!!
In my 48 years in Texas I’ve only heard puh-KAHN
H-E-B for Howard E Butts. Seriously.
We loved Buc-ee’s!
Love love Magnolia!!
Ok love you guys, a Pe can is something that goes under the bed at night, so you don’t have to walk to the outhouse. And H E B is awesome, and the H E B plus is like a much better Super Walmart. Also as RVs there’s a law in Texas you can’t drive past a Buc-ee’s. They are just awesome
Where ever you drive in the U.S.A. you can always tell Two Kinds of Drivers;
Texans and Californians.
Texans will drive as if they own the land.
Californians will drive as if they merely want to be buried in it, with a few local yokels as company.
Would you do a video just on this subject ?
I'm still mad at Winnebago for not sending me the brochure I asked for and instead giving my info to Camping World - pretty much they have lost a customer.
SNOW TEXAS
If they are using the same frame it is not better. Trailer frames are sub par for traveling full time.
As expensive as RVs are, it’s an industry that is highly cost competitive. Also, these are “Recreational” Vehicles, and the owner’s manuals for most them state clearly (in small, buried type) that they are “not intended for full time use” or something to that effect., as if that is a get out of jail free card. And the problem is not just with the manufacturers (assemblers); it’s the components/appliances that are almost universally used. There’s better stuff available; high-end boats, yachts, and ships seem to use Miele equipment for their galleys and laundries, and high-end motorcoach conversions don’t use standard “RV grade” stuff. I have friends with bus conversions that use Paragon water pumps in their systems. Top notch stuff, but $1,600 to $3,000. If you think RVs are expensive now, just load them up with this kind of gear and see what happens to the price. That said, there is no excuse for poor assembly quality. Walls should not delaminate, plumbing fittings should not leak, wire connections should be correct, etc. Everything should be tight, and designed/built to stay that way. And yes, we all know that an RV is just a house being exposed to constant earthquake, but I don’t find that to be an acceptable explanation (excuse). The manufacturers are building machines that have to travel on our existing roads. It’s not like they don’t that.
Why did give up your bus?
Give it a day. It will be 60 degrees.
60’s by weeks end.
PS Some places need CASH no CREDIT CARDS to do the job. Jack
If you need an inspection let me know I am certified RV Technician / Inspector.
the sound is not good I am quite disappointed
🤷♀️
In regards to RV quality... The RV industry's bad reputation for quality control didn't come from nowhere. In what other industry do you pay $50,000 - $500,000+ for a product and it is expected to have all kinds of issues? It's upsetting....especially for those that don't understand what they are getting into. I get spun up about quality...can you tell? 🤣
Keep up the great podcasts and vids!
