How to Change BMW X5/X6M Brake Pads- F85/F86

- This video, I'll show you how I change the front and rear brake pads on a BMW X5M. Same procedure can be applied for the X6M as well. These didn't look like typical Brembo's how you can simply slide the pads out of the brake of caliper. This requires an extra step of caliper removal with a Torx 55. I changed the brake pads on to Hawk HPS 5.0 but didn't like the dust so I'm giving the Powerstops a try right now. So far so good. The Akebono Euro in the rear is also great!

Very helpful and informative video
Thanks again for sharing !!!!
Absolute lifesaver today! Changed the brakes on my new X6M. Excellent video.
Pep-boys in North Cal just quoted me $1300 to replace my X5 front pads . That is insane . I used to replace my Datsun/Nissan pads back in the 80s when I was in college. I guess , I'll do these myself. Back to my 20's life. :D
Thank you for the video. It helped me!
Doing the Lord’s work mate.
This is great now I just need to buy an X5M so I can start working on it. LOL Love the videos man. I have an F80M3 and wanna be like you!
Lol! Thank you! I’m sure you’ll get there soon enough!
lovely days mate
Ouch! I did not know the M Brake is from Brembo. I was a bit shocked to see "Made in Italy" written there. But I heard a lot of people claiming the M brakes are squeaky. The M50d and M50i (which are designed by ATE, a German company) do not.
Also, I was under the impression the brake pads could be removed without removing the caliper - but I looked it up in the original documentation and it is pretty much exactly as you did it. They also put an "!" at (roughly translated from German): Do not let the caliper hang on the brake hose!
Nicely done. Great work.
I was surprised to see Pagid brake pads! Good to know, I didn't know ATE is a German company. IRK, the rear calipers are ATE.
Awesome video!! Already subscribed 👍🏾🔥
This is a really good video. Thank you for sharing. How is the brake dust on the front pads (Z23 Powerstop) compared to the OEM pads? Any brake squealing?
No squealing. The dust is cut down by 50%
I can drive for 300 miles before any dust is shown on the wheels and with the oem pads that would take 30 miles.
Hey Eddie any rotors you would recommend ? For bmw X6M 2019 ?
Awesome video thank you so much. With the money I save on doing the brakes, I can buy more fragrances. 😄👍👍
Love the vids man keep it up 👍
Thank you for watching!
Great video, gonna do my pads, but wouldn’t you put copper grease on the back as well to stop squeaking?
No, you don’t need to with pads with built in shims. Pins are the only thing that should be greased.
What is that pin called? The pin used to knock the front ones off. Thank you Ed!
What do you think about the Powerstop Z23 pads for the rear vs. the Akebono?
Curious to get your feedback
You're a genius bro! My 135i needs rear brakes and i wanna do it myself but i'm so terrified! Your video makes it look easy peasy! Do you think i could use it as a guide or the difference is too huge between the X5M and the 1 series?
I have another video from the F15 that could be similar to your 135i.
Great video! Just ordered the pads because I’m tired of hearing the squeal everytime I brake. Do you recommend changing the brake wear sensor when changing the pads? And if so what brand or a link would be helpful. Also not sure if it’s one sensor for front and rear or 4 total sensors. Thanks in advance!
You can reuse the sensor if you like. If you decide to replace it, there’s two sensor total. The left front and right rear I believe.
For quieter braking , I saw they are recommending ceramic pads, not semi-metallic .
Hi Edward
Very informational. I love it bro. Did you open the brake fluid reservoir to help with pressure relief or it wasn’t needed??
I have 2017 x6m. And I’m planning to try those same brake pads this weekend myself bro
Your video gave me sooo much confidence 💪🏾💪🏾 ///M Power
I didn’t open the reservoir. I forgot to. Typically its good practice to do it and place a rag around it to catch spills.
Good catch. Had he opened the lid, he would have struggled less with pushing back the pistons. They played musical chairs on him . In any case , this great video deserves recognition .
Thanks! Could you let us know how much it reduced the dust and the squealing?
Yep. Update video is out there
thanks man, i'm looking at an X5M to purchase and the car has 3mm pads on the front and the dealer doesn't want to change them for me. Is it this easy on the front as well? Do you need a computer to tell the car to release the pistons so you can get them off?
Yes, they’re easy. No computer needed to remove the caliper or change the pads
Hey Ed, This is great and really helpful. I have successfully changed my spark plugs watching your videos. Thanks a lot!
I'm working on rear pads right now and confused how to get rid of the warnings without changing the sensors. It would be helpful if you can show that as well. By the way I drive 2015 X5M.
Hi! I’m glad you found the videos helpful!
Regarding resetting the brake sensors I have that on a future oil change video but I’ll tell you about two ways.
1. Press start/stop button to switch vehicle on but don’t start the engine. Press and hold the trip reset button in the instrument cluster for about 10 seconds. From there it will bring up maintenance for oil change. Skip forward by pressing the trip/reset button to cycle through until you find rear brakes. To reset that maintenance, you will press and hold the trip/reset for 5 seconds until it prompts with okay to reset?
Press and hold again until the loading bar completes
The Second procedure and simplest way is if you have BimmerLink you can reset it though the app.
@@eddiemcars Thanks for the detail. I Appreciate it! I got the BimmerLink and OBD MX+ adapter to reset the codes. Will try it out and let you know. You are the best! Thanks!
@@eddiemcarsFinal update, I tired to reset the service multiple times and eventually gave up. Replaced the old sensor with the new one and reset the service with no issues, before even mounting the wheel.
In the first place, without your video I wouldn't have made it to this far. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
I thought it would be good to share a tip when replacing the spark plugs. I struggled puling the coils initially and tried to use small rope to pull the coils. May be it could help someone to make their life easier.
Tips: When depressing calipers open the brake fluid reservoir.
Also, I would also lube the back of the front pads.
The reservoir yes. However you only need to lubricate the pins. The back of the pads have built in shims.
I’m going to take your advise and swap out my rear pads for the akebonos- mine is a 2018 X5M-
For clarification, do I need to put the rear ebrake in service mode?
Can you provide some detail- much appreciated.
You do not need service mode. The rear parking brake is engaged by a brake shoes located in the drum independent from the rear caliper.
it will be a good idea to put a rag around the brake fluid reservoir incase the brake fluid overflows and damage your paint and parts inside hood while pushing back brake caliper pistons, also to after removing brake calipers hang them at a comfortable height with a bungee cord to work comfortably with both hands instead one hand trying to hold the caliper ..just a thought one may not agree.
It is not necessary to clean break caliper inside? great video....
You can. I do it sometimes but it just gets dirty again
I have a f86 doing rear rotors bought that bimmerlink and a odb2, I am doing the job this weekend but i am wondering i could not get the app to move the pads, it just says malfunction on display. I have a dumb question is parking brake off the same as disengaged? I cannot hear any movement out of the rear with the app. Everthing else in the app works fine. Do you have any advice???
I’ll he honest. I've never used that feature in Bimmerlink. I think if you enable it, you may get a malfunction because the parking brake is in service mode.
What brand sensors did you use for your X5M? Can you answer me with the link to website please? Thank you....
amzn.to/3VmcaGi
what rotors would you have gone with if you were going to change them? OEM?
OEM are beefy enough and there isn’t any aftermarket that I would trust.
Dope video but did u had to replace your old sensors or did they work just fine?
You can reuse them if not broken but otherwise replace them. Not expensive
@@eddiemcars thanks🔥🔥🔥💯
I plan to do a brake job on my 2018 X5m but I need more details on removing the rear. if releasing the electronic hand brake.
The electronic parking brake is rear drum. It shouldn’t cause a problem when replacing pads.
I’m going to take your advise and swap out my rear pads for the akebonos- mine is a 2018 X5M-
For clarification, do I need to put the rear ebrake in service mode?
Can you provide some detail- much appreciated.
I just replaced my pads/rotors on my 2016 X5M. To remove the rear calipers, I bought a low profile 1/4 inch drive ratchet and a specialty 7mm bit. Worked like a charm. Trying to use the 7mm Allen wrench is a pain.
I can send you the link to the tools if you like :)
Thank you for the tips and yes, I would appreciate a link!
@@eddiemcars here's the hex set I bought: www.amazon.com/dp/B00SQ4DWGQ?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I bought a craftsman 1/4 drive ratchet. Gunmetal 120 tooth low profile. I'd done it before with an Allen wrench and while doable, this set-up was SO much easier. Highly recommend.
Hey Ed I wouldn't mind a small mini-review after about a week or 2 to see if that pad does produce far less dust.
Sure! I should have it done shortly. The Hawks were horrible! I couldn’t stand the dust, but so far the Z23 Powerstops are great!
@@eddiemcars how about the squeal noise when breaking? Were you getting that with the OEM brakes? Mine are soooo bad!
@@rick535xi Yes, my squeals are so terrible. I sound like a school bus. Using the OEM pads
@@dennylegendre6048 I have an X6M and the squealing at low speeds is getting to be unbearable! I think it's the pads that produce too much brake dust which clog the caliper assembly. Maybe not enough brake paste/lube too
So how are the breaks doing do you still use this breaks?! Are they noise free? Im having the same Issue i do have noise. Thank you
I changed to the Powerstop shortly after but they are great!
@@eddiemcars thank you
@@eddiemcars we’re you able to completely eliminate the squeal ?
Buenas disculpa no rectificaste los discos saludos
Dude I can't keep up with you I have the identical car and just finished oil, then changing plugs and coils, now I have to do the brake pads too :) I am planning on doing transmission service next let's see if you beat me to it lol
Lol! I guess we’ll see!
Thanks for watching!
They have a company called Isweep brake pads min dust . Just replaced on x4m competition
Does the F15 X5 have the same pad replacement procedure ?
The rear brakes should be the same or similar.
The front brakes with out the M sport brakes are different

Hey I don't wanna come off as a know it all . im simply looking for an answer. I'm a bmw technician and in the instructions for this service it says to ensure the t55 must never be removed. I know this and because re-read the instructions and realized my mistake. But I don't know why it's bad to take the t55 out - your supposed to remove the E-torx on the back of the bracket. According to AIR
Why didn't you change out the rotors, while you were at it? And you should have use a piston pusher on the front calipers. And lubricate the contact areas on the pads and calipers to eliminate squeaks. I just did this on my X5M a few weeks ago, but I used carbon ceramic pads.
can you link the pads you used, please?
Hi William, those are good questions.
I decided against paste because instructions on the forums indicated not to use it.
The counterweights on the pads themselves eliminate vibrations.
I kept the rotors because I was just at the minimum thickness. I don’t have any juddering from pad deposits either. They’ll most likely need to be changed at the next brake service.
I never used a piston pusher for 2+ piston brake pads. I was looking it up and noticed they have one made just for 4-6 piston calipers.
Which brand Carbon Ceramic did you go with?
I have a 2017 x5m and everything since I've had it my breaks always squeek when coming to a stop drives me crazy
So far the StopTech has been quiet and dust free braking!
Car replacement-part videos should be done exactly like this one, very detailed. Saw many videos for X5 pads , mostly were made like stir fry , little details , and you have to guess steps . Great video man, salute . This video should win the world cup :) However, you skipped the year, which year is your X5 ?
Mine is a 2016 ,F85/F86 which covers the 2015-2018 model years.
Thank you!

What do you think of the 2022 x5m in red? Give me your real answer please
Love it!
please, can you tall me what is a serial number for these front 6 Pot BREMBO calipers and what is the price? I'm really interesting these 6 pot Blue calibers for my X5 F15 30d. I was checking Brembo's offisial site, but couldn't find like these ones.
Right: 34-11-7-852-968
Left: 34-11-7-852-967
Also you need at least 20” wheels for the rims to clear the calipers.
@@eddiemcars Thank you so much :)
are these calipers made by Brembo?
Yes they are!
Hey Ed, I was wondering if you experienced extreme squealing from your brakes. I currently have a 19 X6M with 25k miles and the brakes are unbearable and pretty embarrassing. The dealer keeps saying that that's how it is but I refuse to believe that a high end car like this is supposed to sound like 20 buses coming to a halt.
I have the EXACT same problem and 2 BMW dealers told me the same thing. I think it's a pile of crap because they don't want to chamfer and lube the pads and caliper assembly. Let me know if you find an interim solution.
Exact reason I am about to do my pads the squeeling is horrible, did it resolve when you replaced pads?
Thanks Edward, I have loved you video's on your channel I to owned a 50i and upgraded recently to X5M I was like you not sure if there would be much difference but are so glad I finally got the car I have always wanted, love your content and you have nailed nearly ever issue front brake squeal has been killing me, along with the regular services these things seem to need ... anyway in future content you might share some advise on oil burn if you have it or not there seems to be some variance in cars but keen to know if you are topping up between services? anyway cheers for Australia
Thank you! Congratulations on your upgrade to the X5M! Yes, I noticed more oil consumption with this one. However, I may have found something that might help! I hope to have video in a month or so if it works out! Stay tuned!
How many sets of pads before you need to also change rotors?
Maybe 2-3. Usually it’s a certain rotor thickness
Depends on your driving style . IF you are like my ex-wife, wait until you reach the signal, then push the breaks HARD , then u must replace them too often. Had I replaced the wife sooner, I would have saved on rotors . LOL
Dude i love all your videos... my solution for the horrible metal metal squeak..... with no one around 60mph and hit the brakes... do this twice it'll last 15-20 miles.... the then repeat. The X5M.... it's awesome and worth it
That too. Sometimes rinsing cold brakes with high pressure water hose will remove the residue brake dust.
Ceramic pads produce very little dust , in comp to semi metallic
E/I nice video
The laughter made me laugh 6:20
Try out a Porsche 911 GT3.
I am a physician and switched from BMW to Porsche recently.
Still have my 2018 BMW X5M. But you realize the precise engineering in a Porsche.
BMW M seems like a sledge hammer compared to a Porsche GT3 which in my opinion is like a scam scalpel.
Different type of vehicle but you can appreciate the craftsmanship of a Porsche for sure.
Porsche would be next on my list. The prices of these cars is keeping me out of the driver seat
Hey man just did the Brakes an followed all ur steps. Now I have epb malfunction code reset everything was okay then it came back again an the epb was legit screaming. I backed out the epb an retried procedure. Code came back an now I can’t move the car it’s stuck. Code will not reset now. Is there a manual release? Do you know what I could have done wrong or how to fix this please help any advice is much appreciated.
Try to preform the procedure with parking brake released. If it's engaged, it could cause a problem.
@@eddiemcars Will be trying this asap. Also where is the manual release? Cars epb is completely stuck can’t move the car or reset the light…..
@@brennansulton340 I'm not sure of the manual release since it's a drum based parking brake. If it were piston you could unplug it at the source and manually twist.
This by no means an expert procedure, but if this were me in your shoes, I would try to disconnect both negatives on the battery first.
Let it set for 15 min
Then try again to see if I can connect the device and release the EPB
About to do my brakes and follow along with your video! I went with EBC YELLOW STUFF and sticking with my current rotors as they only have 40k miles.
What torque setting did you use for the back? Considering you couldn’t get a proper socket in?
I couldn’t use a torque setting. Only did slightly above hand tight for the rear
@@eddiemcars Thanks man! You really have a unique product as you’re the only guy on you tube making content around our x5M - so grateful!
Love these videos, thinking about doing my brakes.
How did you determine whether your rotors were still good?
My computer is saying 3000km left on the rears, 20k left on the front. But they are squeezing SO bad.
Can I just do the rears for now? Or do both. And should I keep my rotors?
I’m only at 35,000 mile
I looked for scoring on the rotors and a large lip at the end. I'm at 67,000 miles and rotors are due!
@@eddiemcars I have quite a bit of pad left of the front, doing the rears only and resetting as good right?
Hey Eddie one last question as I have ordered my pads. What part of the callipers did you grease it wasn’t very clear on the video on the rear.
Just an update on my YELLOW STUFF pads…. Wow.
Absolutely silent. OEM stopping power. Not a single sound from the brakes.
I don’t have any info on dust yet as it’s winter here and the roads are all snowy and dirty and I can’t tell. I’ll drop a note here when I can.
