  • Biafra And The Untold Story Of The Oriental Brothers let us go way back to look at the famous Oriental Brothers. The Oriental Brothers International Band was the first Nigerian highlife boy band formed after the devastating 3 years of civil war that ruined the Eastern Nigeria where the boys hailed from hence their name "Oriental" having come from the east. They started as an in-house band (70's) at Easy Going Hotels in Owerri owned by Chief James "Ewele" Azubuike. They became famous, lasted decades in the Igbo Highlife music scene, toured Africa & rest of the world. The Oriental Brothers were originally 5 members namely: Godwin "Kabaka" Opara, Ferdinand "Dansatch" Emeka Opara, Livinus Akwilla(Aquila) Alaribe, Fred "Ichita" Ahumaraeze and the popular Christogonus Ezebuiro "Dr. Sir Warrior" Obinna. The first split within the group occurred in 1977 when founding member and the first leader of the band, Godwin Opara left to start his own band after a dispute under the moniker "Kabaka International Guitar Band" and was replaced with Aloysius Anyanwu, a former guitarist with Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe's Nigerian Sound Makers Band and a founding member of the Ikenga Super Stars band after they left Osadebe's band. Later Ichita and Livinus Akwila Alaribe equally left the band to form another group called the Great Oriental Band. In 1978 a mistrust and copyright issue ensued between Dansatch/Warrior on one side and Aloysius Anyanwu on the other which ended in a libel action. The acrimonious dispute led Aloysius Anyanwu too leaving the band to go solo as Aloy Anyanwu and His State Brothers Band. So that left only Dansatch and Warrior as the only remaining founding members. They recruited freelance musicians around Owerri and some migrant musicians from Ghana to relaunch the band after many exits. They had hit after hit after this reshuffling. Yet again dispute emerged between Dansatch and Warrior over the future shape of the band regarding artistic style. So after their 1980 hit album "Obi Nwanne" both men parted ways. Warrior retained the core of the band's musicians and named himself "Dr Sir Warrior & His Oriental Brothers International Band. While Dansatch continued as Oriental Brothers International Band led by Ferdinand Emeka Opara. Though each of the groups had their distinct sound, they all shared a passion for blending Eastern Africa region's Congolese guitar rhythm blended with traditional Igbo percussional rhythms. According to the Igbo magazine Kwenu the Oriental Brothers played a very important spiritual role in keeping many Igbo people sane. They were the pride of a people traumatized by a war so vicious. He always had a sense of revolution, as he created a brand of highlife that is Igbo at the core, and at the same time universal in taste. Warrior, one of the most influential musicians to come from the East, introduced the "Oyorima" concept which is an Igbo word that means a refined feeling of rhythmic movement and balance. Some of their classics include; Amaghim Onye wu Onye, Nwanyi Di Ya wu Eze, Onye Si Nani Ya Biri, Nwa Ada Di Mma, Obi Nwanne, Ozo wu Iwe m, Anam Ele Chi, Ochichi Nigeria, Ofe Owerri and many others. I bet you've learnt a thing or two about the history of the Oriental Brothers.

    I have followed the Oriental Brothers since as far back as 1973 when they released theirs first hit single "Ihe Chinyere onye analam". I was privileged to grow up having all their records in my house. I always read everything written on their albums, their features in newspapers like Daily Times, Lagos Weekend, and The Guardian Newspaper later. I never missed any publication that had anything to do with the Oriental Brothers.
    There's no dispute whatsoever that Dan Satch was the founder and defacto leader of the Orientals Brothers Band. However, in this interview Dan Satch has made a statement that is disputable. He claims that he composed all their songs which is not what we know. In most of their albums, credit was always given to the composer of each song (except on the "five-finger album") both on the album sleeve and on the plate disk. After Kabaka left the group, Oriental Brothers led by Dan Satch released six albums before Satch parted with Warrior. Those six albums had twelve songs of which Warrior alone composed eight songs while Dan Satch composed only four. I can name the albums and who composed each song as contained on the albums. Two of their greatest hits, "Nwanne Awu Enyi" and "Obi Nwanne" were single handedly composed by Warrior. The credits are their on the albums. So it is wrong for him to claim that he composed all the songs. Mr. Benson Idonije who used to be their producer at Decca West Africa is still alive. He is the maternal grandfather of reigning Afrobeat sensation Burna Boy. Satch should be humble enough to give honour to whom it is due. He should not discredit his colleague who is now late. He founded and led the band but Warrior composed most of the songs.
    Finally, Dan Satch is being uncharitable in the manner he talks about his late colleagues. He should be grateful to God for giving him long life instead of trying to insinuate that those his former colleagues have all passed away because they treated him badly.

    The last time i watched your interview with Kabaka i suggested an idea that would help you get a very vital and privileged information from this great men whenever you have the opportunity of meeting them, these men are blessings to our young generation as such i had i suggested you ask questions like, How did they compose those songs then and what really inspired each of their songs because as i understands their songs are connected to real life experiences, by so doing alot of us viewers would've learnt how this things are done because this days our youths need direction. Instead of asking questions that would rather brew sentiments within and outside of their groups......Please let us take advantage of having this great men in our midst today, they are just among the very few of great men alive today....Such a blessing

    Hmmnnn!! Great insight into the Oriental brothers band. From all Dansatch has said, it is obvious you can't have two or more captains in one ship. From the different bands they formed after their different splits, shows they were individual legends. One of Kabaka's tracks [Mangala Special] alone went as far as South America. I saw another interview where a South American said this. Even saying though they didnt understand Igbo lyrics, the guitar sound reigned in their clubs. He also mentioned Nico Mbarga's 'Sweet Mother' and Victor Uwaifo's Joromi. The likelihood of frictions will always be there when creative minds meet. All in all, the Oriental brothers is a unique band and the greatest to come out of Eastern Nigeria.
    Point of note, why was 'Akwila' not interviewed a bit? At least the audience need to hear his words too. Then the Camera should be focused steadily on them and not you the interviewer. Not to take away anything from your efforts, please keep the Camera on stable next time, so its not moving. At least to make a more befitting and respectable viewership of such legends. GOD bless you for reaching out to them.

    Of late we discovered that this Dansatch was the person causing problems amongst Oriental brothers then . Any of u doubting what am saying should try and get some old albums of Oriental brothers when all of them were together , all of those old albums were written LED BY KABAKA . But the truth remains all of them came together and were sponsored by one Akajiaku 1 of Mbaise and they decided to make KABAKA the led because he was the oldest amongst them .

    • @marvisnwokocha6772
      @marvisnwokocha6772 Год назад +1

      Dan Satch brought all of them together was their defacto lead from the on set. However, Kabaka was their leader officially by virtue of the fact that he was the oldest among the members when they started. Kabaka was the official leader from 1973 to 1977 when Kabaka formed his own band - Kabaka International. However, the soul and life of Oriental Brothers music was Sir Warrior because apart from being the vocalist he was a prolific composer most of their songs contrary to the impression Dan Satch is giving here.
