English Lyrics translated from Russian ;
They rode in a troika with bells, And lights flickered in the distance.
Eh, how would I now follow you, Soul to dispel from longing.
Dear long, but moonlit night, Yes, with that song that flies into the distance,
ringing, Yes, with that old, but seven-string, That tormented me so at night.
Yes, with that old, but seven-string, That tormented me so at night.
Yes, it turns out, we sang for nothing, We burned in vain night after night.
If you are done with the old, these nights are gone.
Dear long, but moonlit night, Yes, with that song that flies into the distance,
ringing, Yes, with that old, but seven-string, That tormented me so at night.
(2) From now on, we are destined to go to our homeland in new ways.
We rode in a troika with bells, And now we arrived a long time ago.
Dear long, but moonlit night, Yes, with that song that flies into the distance,
ringing, Yes, with that old, but seven-string, That tormented me so at night.
Yes, with that old, but seven-string, That tormented me so at night.
Yes, with that old, but seven-string, That tormented me so at night.
This song was a hit in the Sixties in the USA, and I remember thinking as a kid, "Wow, this is different!" When I found out later the song was Russian it made perfect sense.
"THOSE WERE THE DAYS MY FRIEND"
Stolen from USA. The words and subject in Russian totally differentl.

This song makes me nostalgic for somewhere I’ve never been
Same. Makes me nostalgic even though I'm pretty sure I've never heard the song and definitely have never been to Russia. This brings me back to even before I started to listen to Russian music and this my first time.
Yes, I know. In my case I think it may be nostalgia for an alternate life I never got to live.
What a poetic remark!
It’s remembers from past life 😉
Because the lyrics is about nostalgia. Memories that we take with us from past.
I love how Russian music always turns up the tempo.

Imagine hearing this sung by Mary Hopkins as a kid and learning in your fifties you were actually hearing an old Russian folk song.
It's not really a folk song. It's a 1920's song by Boris Fomin (music) and Konstantin Podrevsky (lyrics).
This song is not very old. 100 years. Genre Russian romance

This is a separate and very rich layer of Russian song culture, which was formed at the beginning of the 19th century. that's how it happens ruclips.net/video/ngD1LxdvXds/видео.html

So true.
Please, liberate yourself from such dumb stereotypes. Russian music has a wide range of all emotions. Furthermore, "Russia" in Western, always propagandistic or propaganda influenced sources and real Russia are two different things. There were catastrophes in Russian history, but also Western history is full of such chapters. Russian life, however is usually far away from being hard, sad or tragic. Thanks to the Russian character, Russians surely enjoy their lives more, than most other peoples on the planet. This reflects also in the Russian folk dance, see for example the playlist: Russian Folk Dance - Istoria.

It is a Russian folk song. Our professor of Russian language taught us this song when we were in our matric year in 1960. (I am originally from Czechoslovakia, and was born there in 1942). It was rumored, that he was a prisoner of war in Russia, after the WWll. Anyway, the English translation depicts excellently the meaning of the Russian original.

what is troika?
@@mufljuz563 troika is a type of russian horse team. Three horses are pulling the wagon running at the different allure.
The central one is moving at a trot. Two other horses is running at a gallop. Sorry for my bad English
Some lines are translated incorrectly, I guess.
"Дорогой" means "dear", but it also means "the road", and in this context it means " the road".
"Да" means "yes" , but it s also an oldfashionable analogue for "и".
So I guess the chorus can be translated like "By the road long, and the night moonlit,
And with that song, that flies into the distance, jingling (i guess that in this context the verb " jingle" suits better as a transtation of "звеня"),
And with that old one, with that seven-stringed one,
Which tormented me so at night"
I also think that in the first line "they" should be replaced by "we" bc the song is sang from the first person.
Дорога is road - дорóгой in this case is the change to represent (by the road) - it’s classic Russian declension of a noun. Дорогóй does mean dear, but the emphasis falls on the last syllable instead of the middle one as in the word road.
I love the Mary Hopkin's version but this Russian version is so authentic, I like it too. The paintings of the women! So extremely beautiful.

Yes, with the song that flies into the distance, ringing,
Yes with the old, yes seven-stringed,
That at night so tormented me.
Yes, it turns out we sang for free.
In vain they burned them night after night.
If we are done with the old,
So these nights have departed!

To the other - in new ways -
We are destined to go by fate!
We rode on a triple with bells,
Yes, now we drove a long time.

"Dorogoi Dlinnoyu"
Oh my goodness once again my heart has fallen to the most beautiful voice from heaven
Minunata pasiune si interpretare !!!
Its curious because in Spain its super famous this song, you can take this song out of Russia, but you can,t take Russia from this song. Simply blyatiful
*beautiful
and yes, yes it is
@@aiiiia9971 blyatiful is a combination of blyat and beautiful
Everybody speaks about the song, which is beautiful, but what about these admirable, lovely paintings? Well, somebody can say these are only pin-up girls, exercises, studies, but I always watch with wonderment the people who know what the beauty of a woman is.
This song brings back so many memories, I read my favorite novel while listening to the Russian version but then I heard Mary's version and it became my favorite song.
I listen to it every morning, reminding myself to just live the moment cause waiting for my dreams made me depressed for a long time.
