We started with like 15-20 red and blue shrimp and a couple of ramshorn snails in a 10 gallon tank. We later added a couple of vampire shrimp (which are amazing), a couple of endlers, 2 pygmy cories, and some tiny tetras. It has now become somewhat of a breeding tank. There's now a ton of shrimp and snails and a few extra endlers after they also bred. The snails get fed to our pea puffers in another tank. Since mixing the blue and red shrimp, they created some amazing hybrids. There's red and blue, red and white, blue and white, powder blue, black, brown, a few snowballs, brown, some weird color that looks like a mix of a bag of skittles mixed together. There's even a few red, white, and blue which are pretty awesome being in the USA.
I enjoyed the casual vibe of your video. The low lights and and single frame. I can see that you enjoy what you do and put a lot of thought into the tiny ecosystems you have created. Simple and effective. Well done.
I've got a planted tank. Soil with sand on top. I don't do water changes, I just top it off when it evaporates. Seems to work well with shrimp. I was never able to keep shrimp alive before I started using planted tanks. Now I've got 4 tanks, 1 for each color shrimp I have. They're doing well! Thanks for the info, I bought some crushed coral to see if that makes them even happier 😊
Instead of focusing on culturing a colony of shrimp, I focus on culturing a stable aquarium and a healthy colony of biofilm - which has led to awesome success in my 15 shrimp tanks.
I've had luck with well water. My first breeding was on accident in a five-gallon with a lot of java moss. I'd always suggest keeping them with live plants. They are like little gardeners and it's cute to watch. I didn't understand biofilm at the time but looking back I remember seeing a thick layer on the surface. I know many people pair them with ramshorn but those snails are what crashed the tank in the end. The next time I'm going without snails.
I do 1 waterchange per month and top it up when necessary throughout that time. It's a 10 gallon with 5 blue dreams (1M 4F) got 2 berried females 1 month into the process! Got this off of one of your older videos and it works great! Water is from established tanks
Great bankside chat - music is good accompaniment - just don't let it dominate your shift and subtle tones. Your videos are helpful to the community and enjoyable to watch.
Great Video! My colony (Red Cherry)is about 3 months old and really taking off! Started with 20 and now have art least 100. Super fun to watch them grow. Appreciate the tips! Aloha!
Great advice , mate..I just started keep shrimps..mainly cherry shrimps and golden ones..for about 3 weeks and it started off bad..lost quite a numbers of them..but after those 3 weeks, I guess the water is more stable and they seems quite fine ..added lots of plants and moss..hopefully they able to breed. Enjoyed your vid. Cheers .

@ I use salty shrimp and distilled water from Walmart honestly, but I’ve been told the tap water in Beaverton is good.. I’ve never had any problems since I just top off every few weeks.. I see new babies all the time
ive been having my cherry shrimp colony for 2 years + now and since my parents bought a water softener in the house I have just been using soft water. I feel like the shrimps are doing well in this water as well, they breed well
I'm trying to start a shrimp breeding tank but where I live the water hardness is relatively soft, do u do anything to it or just wing it? It says the tap is 44 ppm near me
Hey, Nick. Great video as always! Do you recommend culling to maintain color in the colony? I was thinking I could have a tank for all my culls or maybe add them to a sump I'm going to be setting up soon.
I just picked up 12 cherry shrimp from my cousin. His tank is producing lots of babies, and their color is so vibrant. He has a cull tank to keep the red shrimp red. The cull tank has some interesting varieties, though.
Always enjoy your videos! I really liked how chill and calming the music was in this one too, do you mind if I ask what it's title is /where you sourced it from?
Thank you! I love your approach! 😂 Just randomly putting shrimps in your water without worrying about the parameters 😅 I can't do that, my water sucks, it's very hard so I have to use RO water mixed in and still I can't get the GH lower than whatever my values are (over 22!)
Im making my 40 sum gallon tank into an aquascape. I discovered seed shrimp and lil bladder snails, at least 30. I have a painted who lives in there, and after seeing the lil micro biome i was like why not ill make it into a community, so im gonna make one side a forest that dips off into a lil valley of rocks. Im gonna add ghost shrimp, and there plenty of room and hiding places. The tank is always extremely clean, i might have to add algae for the scavangers. I have a wall of big ricks that im gonna afd substrate too, which is where the dip off is. The other side is where the turtle docks, he has a large land dock on the top of the tank. He is a picky eater and pretty derpy so i dont expect he will catch many shrimp. Once the plants are accustomed and living well ill add shrimp, i dont want the water changing too much. I have another tank with a baby snapper ive had since birth, and id rather the biotank be with the less aggressive turtle, the snapper has gotten into his yummy yummy food stage, eats everything. Bit either way, once the plants grow a bit and everything is set and happy rhe shrimp will be introduced
my tap water on the sunny coast QLD is about 80tds and ph6.8 or less. i see beautiful quality red/yellow/blue shrimp for $3 -$5 online. i stick to breeding Kubotai Rasbora but might try adding some shrimp and see how it goes.
I have been running a 30cm / 1ft tank for about 2 years, primarily trying my hand at growing aquatic plants (mostly crypts) - in the last year I have added about 7 'blue dream' shrimp. There was a couple of deaths initially, now there is at least 12 that I have been able to count, maybe more as the baby shrimp are dark at first and with the soil substrate being dark brown to black, they are not easily seen so that they can be counted! The amazing thing about this is that I have not really put any other food in there, maybe the occasional broken up pieces of an algae wafer/pellet, they have been feeding off the bio film the whole time! It makes me wonder if I start putting food like what you have mentioned here in there whether the population grow even more?
Hi, nice video. I am about 8 months in to my shrimp project. I have watched many of your videos and they have helped me along. One thing no one is covering is how to catch them Lol. Meaning I have noticed the odd less colorful individuals that I would like to remove from the group but need advice on how. Or how to catch some in order to sell them. This would be really amazing. Thanks
I just tossed 25 red cherry shrimp from a local person into my fully planted 30 gallon that's been running forever with small fish and amano shrimp in it. Should I add a few shrimp from a different breeder at some point for more genetic diversity?
Hi I am new n I Live in Florida this is my first doing shrimps do you ship out your shrimps. And if so how much do you charge I am trying to get some shrimps
Could I ask about more about your red and yellow shrimp colony, I would love to do something similar. You mentioned keeping it for some generations so wanted to ask if you can keep them together with greater success of them keeping their colors even if they crossbreed or if this was temporary? If you can keep them together, were these like red cherry shrimp with just like yellow neons or orange n.d?
My question is, does shrimp know when to stop? I started with 3 Shrimp in my 60lt Aquarium. I now have over 60+ in the Tank in a timespan of 5 months and I don't know should you cull some of the Shrimp or will they just stop when a "limit" has been reach according to Tank size or Colony size?
I have one colony of each color. However, the last month i started seeing purple shrimp out of my blue colony. Shall I cull them? Or separate them into a separate colony for just purples? Not sure yet if they'll breed true 🤞
My tank is teaming with red cherry shrimp. It's a communal tank with a couple of logs that they seem to love. It's a clean tank. I have no idea what I've done, but something is working for them. Maybe it's the bug buffet?
Thanks Nick I want to set up a shrimp tank but I live in the bush on rainwater only with a pH of 4.6 what would be you thoughts on raising ph and tds.coral only bottom?

The only positive story I’ve hold about cross breeding colors.

What are those squiquily things in the crushed coral? Are those worms or some kind of freshwater coral?
my guess is tubifex worm
I added 5 juvenile amano shrimp to my tank they were so tiny acclimated them for 4 1/2 hrs and added them hope they survive

Lol I never change my water, the only time I add water is too top off the tank. I have so many plants, my water and TDS is always great.
what are those tentacle things at 4:24 ?
I've hardly ever had them breed, they live for a long time, but they hardly ever reproduce.
Also, I love the lil mascot.

boss, definitely stocking up on some shrimp for breeding

Sir, what about color mixing due breeding multiple color shrimps in same tank? Would it degrade the shrimp color and its value?
I'm in Brisbane. Do our summers get too hot? If yes, how do we keep it cool?
Ooh, TDS could be a problem for me. It's like 30 for my tap water
Will that be the same as caring for crayfish? not for pet but for consumption and for sale.
whats the background music? it is so ethereal!

I would definitely want to try selecting for purple shrimp if they look cool.
I've got my first little colony of cherry shrimp. They are so fun to watch. Also, crushed coral is great, it is a source of calcium.
What is best when creating a colony, 20 shrimp from one source or 5 shrimp from 4 different sources?
The second, but beware when you mix different colors, make sure you're watching them or if not you'll be shocked with some of wild type color
