The cast members on TOT have actually named him and say that if everyone doesn’t say good morning to him on the first walkthrough of the day the ride will break down all day! He’s a lot less scary when you’re standing next to him haha
While I'd love to ride like this, it's good to know that even when the rest of the ride malfunctions, the elevator system still works. However, I'd be worried about dropping and then not stopping.
Seeing metal and concrete flashing in front of you instead of screen-projected special effects was much more frightening. If the lights ain't working what else is broke?

Everyone cracked up because it was in response to one of the adults saying something is a mirror and, what I assume was an park employee, saying it isn't a mirror. The adults found it so funny because the kid was calling what the employee said b.s.
I had the opportunity to ride ToT with the lights on when I worked there around 2009 for the 20th anniversary. It was kind of cool to see what everything looked like, and the drops were definitely different, but I have to say, I like it much better with all of the effects. I also have ridden Rock and Rollercoaster with the lights on, which was cool. There are some definite head chopper moments in there.😮
