  • Minecraft, a game originally released in 2012, has recieved continuous updates throughout the games lifespan, such as notability the 1.16 update or the nether update, that completely reworked the nether dimension.
In 1.17, minecraft announced yet another HUGE update called the Caves and Cliffs update, that reworked the caves and well the cliffs, and also saw new additions like the warden, however after this update, everything went wrong, so what went wrong with the 1.17 caves and cliffs update for minecraft and how did it get ruined?

Something that annoyed me about the caves and cliffs update is that I felt like the cliffs were TOO common. There’s barely any flat land left, it’s just all massive mountains.

It's just too big for me. For a casual player like I am the big caves are just way too overwhelming and the farming of special ores even harder. I wouldn't mind a big cave every now and then, but these massive caves basically replaced everything that was before

For me it's the weird world generation in caves.
I've gotten more diamonds than iron and coal COMBINED on multiple explorations in the caves. Don't get me wrong, diamonds are amazing, but it sucks when I see them and i'm either outta torches or don't have an iron pickax yet.
That and mining deepslate is painful. Its only a bit slower than regular stone, but if you're going 100 layers down, that small difference makes mining a chore

Same, I think 1.17-1.20 I will need years to adapt, it took me until November 2020 to adapt to 1.16 now I like it, but 1.17+, I cannot enjoy it. The reason being it's hard to progress, I don't even understand it. I barelybplay Java because I have 5 Quidrillion Worlds so I play on Xbox One, because it has Minigames instead of Servers, and it felt like Minecraft really cared about Console Edition but after 2018...it was the end. 1.16 is like 1.13 it took me a while to get used to and now I like it. But 1.17-1.20, doesn't feel Minecrafty anymore, it feels really big, and I want a small exploration, so it isn't too big but not small, console edition had that, if console edition would also continue to modern updates I wouldn't be as disappointed. 1.17+,made the caves too big and too dark and harder to find ores.

As someone who hates caves in Minecraft and chooses to strip mine instead of exploring caves, I hate this update. Caves in itself is not bad, atleast the small ones. The huge nearly empty caves is what annoys me, most because it spawns so much mobs. Its a waste of torches. My biggest complaint though is water caves. Its just everywhere in my mine and I wish there was a better way of clearing it out.

For me what ruined the C&C update was the update to diamond generation. They made these beautiful caves that everyone was excited to explore only to make exploring them yield less diamonds than strip mining. In the end mining was only made more annoying because you needed to mine deeper and dig through tougher blocks. What the hell mojang.

The beauty of the caves and cliffs features being rare is the reason why I love it so much. It's quite special seeing something that's rare in any game so having a bunch of things that are difficult to find is enjoyable to me. Do you remember how in the og minecraft it was super exciting to find a village and they were rarer (at least it felt like it idk the percentages). But it felt like finding villages was special, you would go to it even though there wasnt much to do or much to gain, but it was fun just to mess around and check out what's there. I never passed the opportunity to go to it, but now when I don't need anything it's just like an everyday thing and I'll gladly skip it. Nowadays it feels like I find 3 villages like 200 blocks to each other which is kinda lame in my opinion. Seeing a village is not that special anymore, I don't get that feeling of "oh look I found something". Now I just want to get it over with. The loot got better but it's not as special anymore. That's the reason why I cherish the rare things more and I appreciate that a lot, especially in minecraft which has really gotten stale for me.

@@highkeyhateme Yea but also I can understand mojang's point of view alot. They had to recode the entire world generation to be better all in one update. That's the highest scope out of all the updates they did. There's a lot of technically behind that which I can't even comprehend the complexity of. Damn boi that last sentence really makes me look smart. So anyways it's kinda hard to argue that they didnt add common things when this update literally changes the whole world, and that's legit everything. By looking at it from that point it's no worse than the nether update it's just split into parts which is understandable for me because it's pretty much nether update 10x over because all the biomes and such + raising the sky limit 64 above the limit and 64 below bedrock so yea. It's not a typical update but I think its 🔥 Also the reason the community probably thinks that there is less common stuff added is probably because that stuff got added in the first part of the update and then came the world generation stuff. I think the problem people have with the Caves & Cliffs update is not the update itself, most people loved it; but instead what came after. People really got frustrated when all that was added in the Wild Update were the mangrove swamps and frogs (as the Warden and Ancient City really is just a Caves & Cliffs p3, it really doesn't fit the theme of the "Wild" Update) and the fact it was advertized as an overhaul of previously uninteresting biomes. It had already been a while since the biome polls had happened, so people expected they were finally coming. Add to that the fact that Mojang teased content, some in developpement and others in concept, only to cancel them not that long after showing them, and the chat moderation system that felt like a betreyal of trust for many players and you've made yourself an angered fanbase.

Mojang has all the power in the world to even do monthly updates bigger than what they do yearly (monthly updates would be bad for the game) but they don’t, Microsoft controls them and they could pour more money into better developers to do so much better and add much more interesting and involved features

If you’re gonna revolutionize it so drastically might as well go all out. They could do so much more with abandoned mineshafts and why not add more cave biomes? I think the caves and cliffs update had a lot of problems.
For one, I do think that the update was way over hyped. The cave update had been long desired by the community for over 10 years, and had reached a mythical status in the minds of the community. The mountain update was also very hyped up, as it had been the biome vote winner 2 years before. And they announced them both combined, so the hype was sky high. To add on to that, the nether update was the greatest update of all time and we were just coming off of that, so people’s expectations for what the devs could actually accomplish was also sky high.
In addition to that, the devs over promised and under delivered in CnC, whereas in the nether update they under promised and overdelivered. Originally all we knew about the nether update was the 2 forest and SSV biomes as well as the piglins. But they added so much more on top of that. The basalt deltas, the bastions, crying obsidian, respawn anchors, striders, netherite, loadstones, blackstone, hoe functionality, smithing table use, all these things were originally unannounced.
In Caves and Cliffs, they originally did not deliver on all the sculk content, the terrain generation, the bundle, and archaeology features. To this day they haven’t delivered bundles or archaeology. In 1.18 they still hadn’t delivered on the sculk content. In 1.19 they finally delivered on granted very improved and developed sculk content, but that was muddied by the birch forest and firefly controversy which was yet another example of over promising and underdelivering. So yes, they bit off way more than they can chew and made public things that they shouldn’t have made public. I still remember thinking they would add 1 or 2 more cave biomes as surprises.
The next issue was COVID, which is self explanatory.

Mojang didn’t deliver on their promises. That’s why the updates felt lackluster. As another commenter said, the Caves and Cliffs update was split up into three parts. Part one was the goats and axolotls, part two was the actual caves and cliffs, and part three, combined with the wild update, was the Warden and ancient cities. These features were promised in one update, but they came out separately. The wild update could have done so much the gain the respect of the community back. Mojang didn’t update and overhaul the swamps like everyone thought. They just added a new rate biome that doesn’t even cover 1% of the Minecraft world. The fireflies were cancelled because people were mad about the frogs eating them. This is a game that has a dragon, skeletons, zombies, pigmen, and so many other fantasy creatures. Mojang gave into the pressure from stupid people and removed them. Mojang could’ve still added fireflies, and just had the frogs not eat them, or they could’ve not changed anything. Once again, because it is a game that has fantasy elements and creatures in it. The mangrove swamps don’t have the atmosphere that people expected it to because of the fireflies being absent. They didn’t overall the swamp biome already in the game, and they didn’t add the birch forest with the tall trees. They could’ve split this update into multiple parts. This would’ve made sense. Update one or two biomes at a time until they were done. That would have been amazing and Mojang could’ve gained more respect along with the respect they lost after caves and cliffs. Another thing I will add is the mob vote. It’s stupid as hell. One mob gets to be in the game while the rest on the contenders never have a chance to be in the game, ever. If Mojang just added all the mobs from the mob vote one at a time, over a period of a year or two, that would be so much better. That way every cool mob they make you vote on can get added, along with a lot of variety. Variety, good, well received updates, developers who listen to the community, and a happy community behind a game are what make a game successful. Mojang can still recover from this. They just have to not under deliver on their promises. I do still like the updates and the content within them. I still respect Mojang because they turned Minecraft into what it is today. But I don’t like the fact the under delivered on their promises. We will never know what fully goes on behind the scenes, but I’m confident that Mojang will release a new update packed with more content than the three parts of the caves and cliffs update, and the wild update, which will rival 1.16.

    • @jaydenc367
      @jaydenc367 Год назад

Um first off them splitting Caves and Cliffs still made sense and they did not lose the respect of the community from it. Splitting 1.19 would not make sense though and would just make them lose respect and again Caves and Cliffs did not make them lose respect. I do agree with you on the mob vote though. That amount of content would surpass 1.16 as 1.17 and 1.18 already covered a lot and if you include the warden it is a lot of cave update content.

I used to love building mob farms and lighting up caves used to be extremely important but now there’s no use because the caves so large and the skybox has been raised. You could always build up to negate the caves for your grinder but there was a limit to this because you’d probably be near the skybox and wouldn’t be able to make a massive grinder, until now.

The main issue with the caves and cliffs update was that it was supposed to be the solution to the cave update everyone was begging for for years, we wanted the main parts of minecraft to be renewed, we had gotten the Craft updated with the village and pillage, which is highly underrated but for me was one of my favs since it added a whole lot more stuff to work for and decorate your house and fixed villagers, but I was expecting more resources, the caves are big, but the same ores, amethyst is practically useless and so is copper, the caves and cliffs didnt give any new rewards, only risks, making mining more of a chore without anything new for us to gain.

My biggest problem with the caves and cliffs update is that it made the already tedious process of mining into something way more annoying to me. They are pretty, very pretty and I was excited the first time I saw one, but they're very impractical. I hate the new ore generation, now I only go mining with night vision potions that take too much space in the inventory because there's no coal at all once you go down. It's as if the game is punishing you for exploring deeper. And there's just so, so much cooper and it's really just useless on it's majority unless you like to build with it (personally I find it very ugly). I'm constantly lacking on iron and coal and if I picked every copper I've found I'd have stacks of it. Though, I think it's very cool the player can now take much more advantage of night vision as there's a lot of ores hidden in the ceiling of caves, but I wish this was optional and a late game thing, not doing it just because I literally do not have an option. Oh and bundles, oh the bundles, I love using potions and I'm happy they're more useful now in the game but I wish I could carry them in the bundles showed that were never added :/
On the other aspects, I think they should've just added all the mobs in the mob vote. Copper wouldn't be that useless now if the copper golem were approved, and players would have a bigger incentive to explore higher cliffs to have a change to encounter the iceologer (I forgot about the lethal snow until watching this video again lol). And the glow squid still looks very cool for underwater caves, but shouldn't have been the only one added.
Anyways, I don't hate the update(s) either, but I just hope they keep improving what they've done.

The lack of goal in deeper areas is intended. You are not being punished for exploring, you're just going into a harsher area. Mining takes longer, you'll start running out of light sources and will inherently be at a further distance from the safety of the surface- the deeper you are, the more danger you're supposed to be in, insentivizing you to prepare for that accordingly.

Altho mention of it was brief, i REALLY appreciate the mention of the deep dark/ancient city not being hyped up as some end game difficult thing.
I can understand new players or people who don't know what it is having trouble with it, but past that it just isn't end game or difficult at all. It doesn't help that if you do wait till end game (or late game whatever you wanna call it) then most the loot it has becomes literally useless and no longer helpful in anyways unless you really want swift sneak or to collect all the disks. It gets old seeing so many people hype up such a mid game area (and honestly since no mobs can spawn other than the warden and even then if you do accidentally summon him he is easy af to avoid maybe even early game ish).
If you know how to press a single button to crouch, then there is absolutely no excuse for you to call it anything near an end game area.

Really my only complaint with C&C is the Warden. I've not personally noticed the world generation being "rare" like how you described it in the video, everything from mountains to lush caves feel abundant enough to me for what they are intended as (obviously, this depends on both seeds and personal expectations). The Warden though, it doesn't feel like something that should be in the Overworld. It's basically an endgame biome, and even then it's still incredibly deadly. That's not to say it shouldn't be in the game entirely though. Rather, I think it would've been better suited for The End. Not only would its difficulty and loot be better suited for that environment, but it also adds more to what I think is a rather lackluster dimension at the moment.

My least favorite thing about 1.18, and the thing that lowered it on my ranking of updates, is that they removed the custom world types like Sky Islands and Caves. I understand that the world-gen overhaul would've made these generation types outrageously buggy, but they've been radio-silent on whether or not they're coming back. These types of worlds were so much fun to play when you were bored of the traditional Minecraft experience, and they each had wildly different strategies to utilize that made each one fresh.

I'm colour blind & still hate the new ore textures because they look too much like the walls especially for Iron. the look of them is just well not as noticeable as the classic ones. they add similar shades which with colour-blindness becomes harder to tell apart leading to them being more missable in a cave which is why I still play with classic textures today. My colour blindness isn't even that bad so I'd not know if it helps a person with worse colour blindness as it'd be hard enough to see them already but with some of those samey colours it becomes a contrasting thing that I can't describe well but it basically messes the focus of colour.
Edit: I wanted to also add my main problem with the update. I liked the new caves & mobs but felt like things where missing. the Axolotl should be tameable not kidnappable as it doesn't come back. Copper & Amethyst should really have been given more uses. Copper should've gained at least some more Redstone uses such as a variant of repeaters & its own trail that acted like Redstone but didn't mix & maybe went farther but could only power one thing needing special Redstone parts like a junction or something to allow its wires to split kinda like how real wires only go to one thing unless you add parts to allow them to go multiple places. At most copper should've had some early game tools which could be as good as gold but more durable maybe between stone & Iron & with its own armour to add a viable early game armour set. Amethyst should've gained some uses as a decorative block with some unique things & also some kind of jewellery that can be enchanted or some other use. They also needed a few more biomes as they only added three & the new shapes of caves. Slime chunks maybe could've gained some noticeable characteristics. I wouldn't have minded another ore or a few enchantments or some update to minecarts to make them more helpful when mining. I feel they got so held back by the whole deep dark & its high ambition that it held back from most of the other things people expected to see.
edit 2: also this is more just a minor thing I hate the way they did the Amethyst geode was nice but making it that you had to stay there to farm the amethyst was fine but the amethyst cluster thing is too easy to break they should've made it take a long time to break like obsidian so that when you're collecting the amethyst you don't by accident break the thing necessary to farm the block or maybe allow it to be taken away but that'd defeat there little idea.

Mojang needs to stop holding mob and biome votes. They made promises that past ideas that didn't win would be implemented in future updates but that's just not happening. They're just focusing on the next big vote they can push out and have everyone talking and fighting about them over twitter then they'll bring out the concept that we'll all get excited for for a few days before getting bored again and then they'll show the next mob vote.
They need to focus on actually adding in what was promised and overhauling their biomes. I don't want them to see every single concept idea they've had because over half of it won't be implemented. I don't want them hyping up three cool ideas to only get one (and it's always the worst ones voted in) and then the rest just get shoved aside with a "promise". Stop hyping up twitter talk and just focus on the game. They need to stop taking votes from the public when they clearly had ideas they wanted to add in ( more underwater mobs/features, copper/tuff golems).
I sadly know this won't happen. The new update will roll out, and everyone will love the camels and the sniffer and the bamboo for about a week and then we'll get bored again and Minecraft will tease another mob vote and the cycle goes on.
Also Mojang. Fix the performance of your game.

One thing that bugged me about the caves part is half of the time it's like your going into a slanted cave of deepslate only for it to end with literally nothing but deepslate it always irritated me not to mention lush caves don't always appear where the lush trees are but the weird dirt of those places will instead not to mention they said you would be able to find Axolotls playing in the Lush Caves but you mostly see them in the large caves such as the swiss cheese caves you mention it's rare to see them in Lush i loved the update but those things along with it being split up so much was quite annoying

Think the most noticeable thing with this update was performance for me. My gaming laptops gpu broke and had to send it back for repair so was playing on a old gaming laptop and had to switch to Bedrock to play MC. Plus was I decided to switch to 1.12 to play 2b2t and had a lot of fun, honestly think a break in content updates for a performance/parity update is in order. Run a rtx3060 so am fine personally but java needs optimisation and bedrock needs more parity, would be a hard sell but vanilla java needs to run better.

What’s parity? And how would it help Bedrock?

I'm not an expert on how Minecraft itself is coded, but I do know a thing or two about java.
Java is a high-level programming language that does its own garbage collection (garbage collection is deallocating memory for things that cease to be absolutely vital, which java infers based on usage instead of being under direct control of the programmer). I don't know how optimized Minecraft itself is, but any project in java's theoretical maximum of optimization is going to be much less than other languages.
Based on how I've heard other people describe it, the only way to make massive optimization improvements to Minecraft would be to completely re-code it in c or c++

I think the caves and cliffs stuff would've all been recieved much better if Mojang had just said that a delay was needed and pushed all of it back to be released together.
